I have to agree with this. The "opposite" of depression is not sociopathy. Just because something "feels" good does not mean it's an answer to depression.

The "quality" of the game doesn't bother me so much since I'm not playing it but since this game is made by someone with a background in the mental health profession they really should know better than this. Judging from some of the stuff that's been written by other posters about the creator of this, I can't help but feel a bit of escapism bleeding into this work.

If you guys are interested I'll post it but for now I'll keep my party poopin' ways to myself.

I do agree that this last video had a pretty accurate depiction of the day to day realities of depression. Everyone has good days and bad, but a complete inability to deal with little things when you're already down, to the point that bad/"bad" days are completely crippling... yeah, I've been there. More often on medication than not, too. :v:

*I just realised this comes across like I'm saying others aren't actually depressed, woops. I meant compared to the other people who criticised the game, who I don't think mentioned having any mental health issues. I'm not saying people who are depressed shouldn't like this game, that would dumb.

Eh, my guess is that it's just a possibly unnecessary use of a jump forward with subsequent flashbacks. We have no reason to suspect that the pest control guy was called immediately after our conversation with the neighbor, Susan would have had to have played the piano again, which we haven't done.

Since we know that Susan sees dead people, there's two possibilities for what I think may be going on:
1. Mitzi really is Susan's long-lost dead daughter, who died at the age of 1-5 from some form of cancer, ruining her marriage and her life. Hence why Susan immediately just uncharacteristically shuts the hell up when she sees Mitzi's head.
2. Judging from the "Two Twins" puzzle and pretty transparent characterization of Doctor X "I don't know that I could call myself an artist... not yet anyway", it's entirely possible that they go with the well-trodden "Mitzi's cancer goes into remission, they celebrate with piano jazz, and the serial killer comes and kills Mitzi/abducts Susan" path.

Spoiler tag for recent video.

To prevent this ambiguity between the common usage of the word depression and say the DSM/ICD version, you should use "clinical depression" instead as that's understood to mean the mental disorder rather than the mood.

This game really does have a pacing problem at times.

Eh, I think it's mostly there to show the depth of how much control the Eye of Adam has over his victims. Not only is he controlling them to kill themselves, it's so complete that he's dictating every action they do on the way out.

The toilet bleach to which they refer isn't NaClO(aq.) but instead HCl(aq.). Interestingly , the instructions for making deadly H2S(g) have been obscured through the requirement for an ammonia containing compound.

HCl + NH3 gives you relatively safe NH4Cl (aq.) as a product.

Obviously you can't get H2S because there's no sulfur in the reaction.

Unfortunately, if you don't know what toilet bleach is (or you just keep hearing them refer to "bleach" rather than 'acid') , you wind up with a different deadly poisonous gas, Cl2(g).

Not sure if it's a mistake or an oversight or a difference between British and American idioms, but I found it interesting.

That is true, mixing the two ingredients just gets you a solution of chloroamines that will probably give you cancer in the long run but won't instantly kill you. I drew the comparison to SH3 for that reason, they deliberately gently caress up the chemistry (I imagine) in order to prevent some dumbass from trying it himself. There is was generic "bathroom detergent", here it's fertilizer.

I assume they are shooting for Cl2(g), just obscured it intentionally. There are bleaches that contain some sulfur, the reducing bleaches that they use in some organic materials industries, that would liberate H2S in the presence of acid (again, not ammonia). However, its pretty obvious that they mean household sodium hypochlorite.

Holy poo poo. :stare: ...I really don't think "being a stone cold motherfucker" is a normal symptom of clinical depression.

But goodness, the gameplay of this part looks tediously un-fun, what with the, um, wife just popping up wherever. Is that supposed to be randomly generated? Yeesh, if so. And of course, the hilariously immersion breaking phone calls were great too. I find it highly unlikely that the police, even the incompetent cops of Not-England here, wouldn't send a cop car to someone who said they'd been kidnapped, regardless of the caller's medical history. Also, Mitzi handled that call considerably smoother than I would, had someone called me up to say, "Hey, I've been kidnapped by cannibals, and I need the recipe to some poison so I can kill them, because I can't just find my way home by following the street in the fog, for some reason."

Susan could have just said "If I call the police I'll never be able to 'properly' deal with the parasites" or something. Seems like the game has given up all pretenses of you not having to kill them now anyways, even going as far as to put mystical fog preventing you from going home (that clears up after you kill all monsters, like in some action-horror game).

I guess we can only assume that she's now living in an alternate dimension where the police give even less fucks than normal?

I think, at least in the United States (I'm unsure if it works this way in England), she would have been able to just call the emergency hotline, and just hang up. And probably pick up the phone and leave it off the hook so they can't call back. From what all I've heard, they would basically send a patrol car to make sure everything was okay.

But then that would be sensible, and Adventure Games don't really do 'sensible'.

It's a shame that the dialog wasn't tweaked a bit; The cop could have said something that implied he thought Susan was having a psychotic break. If I recall, the 'tell Mitzi to call the police' might say something like that? I remember watching a stream that someone did and they choose that option and it didn't actually matter.

Though that theory in the video does bring up an interesting ideas. All the 'parasites' being brought back to life and given powers thing. It would 'explain' some things. But I'm unsure if Remigiusz thought of a reason why the 'zombie' moved like that when writing this section, akin to the whole 'not knowing who the Queen of Maggots' was when Remigiusz started writing it thing.

It would be interesting to know how different, if at all, the plot/dialog was from the first draft. Not counting spelling/grammar fixes.

I would have thought waifu would have at least taken Susan's inventory away after killing her and dragging her back down to the cellar. Or maybe found it strange in the least that she's killed the same woman twice.

Not being able to call for help is at least within the conventions of the genre, though I think "well, ma'am, with the fog it's too dangerous to drive, so we can send a car after it lifts" would have been a bit more sensible than "you're crazy".

If I wanted to be gracious, I would say that it is showing what a black mark getting mental help can be once it goes on record. No one will believe anything you say anymore because hey, you're clinically insane, right? So gently caress you!

The laws of the fiesta mean nothing!
Just caught up on this LP, and wow, this game is incredibly uneven. If it were only a game about someone fighting the urge to destroy themself, it would work beautifully, since Michalski has done a wonderful job portraying suicidal depression in fiction. A lot of authors get the details wrong, or sensationalize it, but for the most part his treatment is quite genuine. I also kind of like the art style and "animation", and the music getting louder at moments of distress is a nice touch, as well.

But then there are elements like the Wacky Dancing Blindfolded Doctor who turns his victims into the works of DaVinci and Vermeer, where you can make a cheesy quip before killing him with a sawblade mace that you took your time building because the woman being tortured in the next room is in no danger of actually being killed. And the British Chainsaw Massacre couple. And the call to the police. And Mitzi going on about :fut:. And the knights and knaves puzzle, et cetera. None of these really work, and only serve to drag the rest of The Cat Lady down.

Did the author feel that he had to graft on a lovely horror game, in order to provide more content? Perhaps he did it as a way of broadening the game's appeal? In any case, it's disappointing that the game ended up the way it did.

An editor probably could have salvaged much about the horror elements, but the author doesn't seem like the type of person who would ever agree to run his work by someone and have them take a red marker to it.
