http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3740211 For those who haven't been keyed up to it, graybook's Idol Rhythm Games thread is a thing and I like it. It looks like it's geared more towards Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls Starlight Stage, but anime touchscreen idols shouldn't compete and I highly encourage cultural exchange. SO GO DO IT

Imagine that Japan was Texas, and high school football was, instead, hip hop dance concert competition! Okay not really but

So there was a school and stuff that needed to be saved with dance and song but I don't think anyone remembers because

ayyyyyyy amines in da haus

Love Live!: School Idol Festival is a rhythm game for phones and phone-like tablets. It's based on this writing/anime franchise thing and you use your thumbs to bash your team of nine anime waifus over their faces when the hoops float over them.

why did i decide to screencap during wonderful rush hard mode, help

Anyways, this ostensibly allows players to insert their own track of various tambourine noises into some insidiously catchy school idol songs. The better your timing, the higher your score, the more Gs:signings: and new recruits:swoon: for your idoling teams that you get.

The game does follow the standard Asian mobile game formula as a free-to-play game with in-app purchases. However, the game does give away copious amounts of premium currency (Love Gems) for free. See below.

Get it here for iOS and here for Android.

By the way, those links are for the English version of the game and it is almost exactly a year behind in content versus the JP version. There's an English wiki for the JP version with a localization guide for the few name/term differences between the versions. It keeps track of English version updates here.

While this thread is mostly discussion about the English version, you can get the JP version here for iOS and here for Android ("Japanese" devices only). There are more songs and events currently running but then you don't get to read what your favorite pretty kawaii anime schoolgirl is saying in the fully-voiced visual novel character shorts and hokay moving on to the next section

Note: If you use a rooted Android device, you won't be able to play unless you follow a few steps to hide your root.

How to play:

These will come out in pairs. Make sure to hit these at the same time.

This one needs good timing. It will kick your butt if you don't hit it with at least a Great or Perfect.

HOW TO GET BETTER AT SAVING YOUR SCHOOL WITH YOUR FINGERS
From the home screen, navigate to Other > Settings > Live Show tab > Adjust Timing. Many devices have different processing speeds and everyone has their own sense of how fast they can touch moving hoops, so make sure get your setting tested out here. I have my timing set to -15 on my motorola doohickey maxx.

On the same Live Show tab settings, make sure to turn Pop-Ups off and Text Size to S. This can eliminate a lot of visual distractions for you on hard songs with a lot of junk to hit on the screen. You can also turn Effects off if the smaller sparkles are annoying for you.

This playlist of videos is really nice for learning Hard or Expert songs, with each having a separate version slowed down to 80% speed in addition to extra audio cues and positioning charts.

Also, try setting your phone or tablet on a table and use your other fingers if you're using thumbs right now, it's what all the pro leet EX Mode Full Combo masters dooooo

wow 30bux just to get 50 gems for a single SR card and a non-chance at other ones
Get the most out of your non-money! General things to do in order to receive free Love Gems:

-Daily logins. If you log in every day, every third day you'll get one.
-Logging in on January 17th, March 15th, April 19th, June 9th, July 22nd, August 3rd, September 12th, October 21st, or November 1st. Five Love Gems each. Waifus are real, man.
-Idolizing cards. Special Practice a card with a duplicate of itself and then max out its Bond by running songs with it. This will unlock a Story section that will reward you with a Gem. You can only do this once per unique card, but there are a lot of them so get cracking!
-Doing the Main Story. Depending on the chapter, you'll unlock new songs to play and then receive a Gem at the end of the chapter.
-A-ranking and S-ranking Daily Songs (B-sides section) on Hard and [Super Hard] Expert mode in both score and combo chains. Four Gems per song. vanilla Expert songs also give a Gem for the S-rank full combo chain.
-Getting the S-rank reward for completing a Hard or Expert song 3475239048567130467813045698 times. Getting these gems for each song is a large time commitment.
-Doing Events. These give a few gems just for participating a little, even more if you place in the middle of the pack in ranking tier rewards at the end of the event. You also get a Gem for completing the Event's special song on each difficulty Easy/Normal/Hard, then one each for Expert and Expert-Random.
-Album Rewards. These give Gems for hitting milestones such as number of cards Idolized, max leveled, or max Bonded.
-Promotions and apology Gems for server-side errors. Once in a blue moon these Gem rewards gained upon login won't be gems, they'll be free pre-idolized SR/UR cards!

I've had enough of this thread's dumb jargon, what the heck is Perfect Lock?!?
If you do end up spending Gems on the Honor Student Box, make sure to look for any SR or UR cards (can be any Skill name) with the Skill effect that mentions a "timing window" easing. This is Perfect Lock. Cards with this skill are highly recommended in order to work up long combo chains on Hard and Expert songs unless you are literally a robot with capacitative finger simulators like in the clip above. Note that mundane R cards with those kinds of skills won't fix GOODs for you, and as such do not fall in this category.

EVENTS
Every two weeks there will be an event that pops up in an attempt to get players to come back and spend time and gems. Events are participated in by playing regular songs to get the event tokens that pop up in each of them (you can get an extra 1 in a 15-LP hard song or 2 in a 25-LP song), and then spending those tokens to complete the event's feature song for hundreds of event points. These event points get you stuff during and after the event. Stuff includes but is not limited to:

-Love Gems
-newly released N cards (for idolization and album rewards)
-An exclusive SR card obtained outside of the Honor Student drawing

In an event you can enter an Event Song Ranking (for score) which is dominated by people who have spent shameful amounts of money for handfuls of UR cards, or you can spend extra hours and burn Gems for the Event Ranking (for total event points grinded up in an event) for an extra copy of the exclusive SR card for idolization, but these things are not recommended.

In case you want to grab as many event points as you can however, here's a chart for which event song difficulty you should grind depending on what song score ranking you can consistently get:

SCORE MATCH EVENTS
These are even more simple than normal Events! Enter the event through the advert on the game's home screen. Put together your strongest red, green, and blue teams and just get a high score. Your event point rewards depend on how you compared to three other players or CONFUSED STUDENTS on the same song. Repeated spamming of "Nico Nico Smile!" recommended before each match.

That's one of the things I was debating over regarding how to best use love gems; the only way to get a longer friend list is to rank up, which isn't a very quick process thanks to how little LP/stamina you get

You'll find that the point ranking is very much dependent on the stats of your idols. Even with a completely perfect run you might not score above C or B if your idols have poor stats in the song's attribute (Smile, Pure or Cool).

Just do Hard songs. You get a free 500 friend points just for completing a Hard song for the first time, good for 5 new scoutings. Something like "Yujo No-Change" on Hard is only 10 LP/stamina to play, and in my opinion is easier than "Oh, Love & Peace!" Normal in my opinion. The incremental rewards for Hard mode songs are huge sums of Gs and thousands of friend points if you do well/play a lot.

Like AG3 said, high scores on Normal and Hard are not something obtainable from the get-go. Focus on just clearing songs for Rank experience first so that you can unlock more songs to clear for rewards. The game won't care if you Full Combo every song or you barely scrape by with one Stamina remaining, it'll give you the same amount of Rank experience the more LP you spend to play songs.

As you slam your head harder into the game's grind you'll naturally get more and more fodder to Practice your group members into higher stats, or better yet, obtain Rares who have higher maximum stats for your intended score attacks.

It's a free draw from the premium box, go ahead and use it. It prevents you from doing the 11-card draw until you do as well, in case you need to be a giant whale right now.

If you want to be frugal about getting the most out of love gems just keep saving them until the first event finally comes around. Most events are *supposed* to give you the opportunity to spend 50 gems to do the 11-card draw, with at least one guaranteed SR idol as a result.

It's currently all up in the air right now in the English version right now though, as the first event last week was postponed until further notice. I'm not really sure if it's worth it in my own opinion to hoard up all those gems regardless--the game gives you enough free love gems (through most of the content available already) to draw about 1 SR card on average anyways with normal 5-stone pulls (I have two SRs).

I'm thinking I'll go back and count exactly how many gems are easy to get and come up with a list of where to get them.

Some taps will be a hold where you release with with one finger and tap with another at the end. At least, those are all the ones I've encountered.

How many songs are there?
Currently in the English version there are 10 songs with three difficulty levels each. The source material Japanese version has 52 songs with 4 difficulty levels rotating in on different events, so there's a lot of content to come.

It's not important like it is in PAD. Having a mundane old R as leader and all Normals as subs won't block you off from content or anything. You may be a little more popular regarding friend invites if you have an Ultra Rare (and gently caress you if you do have a UR), but usually those invites won't be from players with leaders worth using. Meanwhile, in this early stage of the English version's development I speculate that the game throws you random potential friends with SRs and URs like candy.

List of Love Gems you can obtain in the English version for free (EDITED for more correct info):
  • New player bonus: 30 gems for logging in for your first 10 days, 3 gems each day
  • 4 gems from daily login bonuses for the 1st, 6th, 11th, and 16th days
  • 15 gems for each Story chapter unlocked and viewed (might be 18 if Prologue chapters counted, I forgot)
  • 27 gems for each Normal card's Side Story (idolized Normal card with maxed-out Bond)
  • X gems for any Rare card's Side Story
  • Album rewards: 1-4 gems for collecting 5/10/25/50 idolized (merged) cards
  • Album rewards: 1-4 gems for collecting 5/10/25/50 maxed Bond cards
  • Album rewards: 1-4 gems for collecting 5/10/25/50 maxed Level cards
  • 10 gems total from single-gem reward for clearing each Hard mode song 100 times (good luck with that)
  • 1 extra gem for drawing ten time from the premium box (11 card draw as well?)

Total = Anywhere between 82 and 100+ gems depending on how much time one puts into the game, enough for 16 to 20 premium draws, very likely to guarantee you at least one SR card and will on average get you two.

Plus the 1 free premium draw ticket new players appear to obtain. Note that we may get extra gems for the event mishap we're having right now too.

Yeah, 11 card draw gets you an instant gem. Actually I think it can get you two since I seem to recall the "free" draw adding a star to the meter, so if you were 1 star from getting a free heart gem you'd get 1 gem from the 10 draws and another for finishing the last star. I might have been hallucinating though.
