Explain to me how higher education isn't an elaborate scam perpetuated by societal expectations.

Why wouldn't someone go into a career program instead? Why do I have to spend obscene amounts of money to take a bunch of useless general education classes when I just want to get a job in computer programming?

Because you're doing it wrong? I got AP credits from highschool that got me out of some liberal arts BS, then I got a two year degree for pennies on the dollar that got me out of ~90% of the rest of it.

The downside to this plan was the final 2.5 semesters of math/CS/science at a real college.

It is, but that doesn't mean it's not greatly to your advantage if you do it right.

How the hell are you possibly supposed to know this in highschool? You lucked out and had parents/family/friends that had connections? You have to be properly informed and have connections for college to work and that's why tons of people were lied to by the schools they went to and have degrees they can't do anything with.

I don't go to school. I dropped out of community college in 2009 because it was a huge money sink and I didn't want to be there in general. What's the point? I don't need to go to school to get a job and make money.

I'm very thankful I made that decision, because I could have gotten through school and be where I am know but 80k in debt. At least now I have 12k+ in savings and no debt.

By the way, I do tons of inventory at a department store and most of my coworkers have college degrees and make less then I do because they haven't been there as long.

edit: grammar

No, only in these threads because the conservative/moderate line on minimum wage and unemployment as an issue is that everyone could just go to Trade Sschool

Which is true, to a degree, you could go get some HVAC training or become an electrician or just fix lights and make a cool living that can support a small family or a pretty ridiculous single man's lifestyle, but of course if everyone had access to those trades there'd still be unemployment. Still, it's good that there are opportunities left these days

yeah, for my historical theory class, we had to read all the sources about the murder of hypatia which was in 415 ad

there were 4 of them

that's one of the reasons why i have to learn latin, they reference things we don't have anymore w/r/t ancient greek texts

My parents, who went to university for free in the 70s, bitched and whined at me until I went to university. I burned out in my third year trying to pay the rent and bills working in a call centre while also studying full time and had a big ol breakdown. Now I have a $25k debt and I'm a theatre technician with touring experience, which did not require a degree and is a way better and more enjoyable line of work than parking my degreed rear end in an office chair and watching it grow fat. My parents have switched to reminding me that I can be arrested at the border of my home country if I don't pay my loans off. Cheers for the support, guys.

My mother did a masters in philosophy just recently and is about to retire. She has no intention of paying off her loan for the masters, and nobody will make her when she is on a pension because her her income will be too low. It will be written off when she dies. In conclusion, gently caress baby boomers.
