Can I buy you a rootbeer?

Who wants a 2-month temporary Unity Pro license? Because I have one with 100 activations on it.

First come first serve. Either PM me, or message me elsewhere (@glassbottommeg or whatevs) and convince me you're a goon / an honest person that won't just leak this code and spoil the fun for everyone. This is also only open to people competing in SA GameDev.

come join us in IRC. #SAGameDev on synirc!

Every year, we erstwhile few gather on the field of code and art, and do battle. Some for glory, some to prove that they can finally finish a project, and others for the glittering riches. Some simply wish to redeem themselves, and finally have their name scratched from The Wall Of Shame. But for whatever the reason, we've done it for 7 years. SEVEN YEARS. And now the eighth year is upon us. Get ready, because it's time for:

(Logo and tiny logo and layered PSD by Polo-Rican)

SomethingAwful Game Dev Challenge 9

Every year, we hold a game development contest here at SomethingAwful. The goal? To make an ENTIRE GAME within a single month. June, the month in which you stand today, is for ORGANIZATION AND TEAM FORMING. You are NOT to write a single stitch of code, ink a single line of art, that is project specific. Instead, now is the time to formulate ideas, write general code systems for engines, begin rough concepting, and generally figure out how, come July, you will make a game for the following theme.

This year's theme is: Public Access Television

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXkBzTLOyjchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_ukLomGV7M

Especially if you're not from the US, you might have no idea what "Public Access TV" means. Basically, it a channel/band on which people broadcast just about anything, with no standards or control or anything else. Like the above. Here's a YouTube on the subject, with yet more bizarre examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cll61_VOqzA

If you're still confused, and going "but I'm not from the US, I've never even seen this!" - yes you have. You've seen Tim and Eric, and they have the soul of Public Access TV down pat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFTaiWInZ44

You would be forgiven for thinking "wait, this year's theme is about... making terrible games?". No. Terrible games that no one wants to play are still terrible. Your challenge, over the month of July, is more be to make a charmingly terrible game. Something that's awkward, and stilted, but endearing or interesting enough that players want to see how it ends. Something that inspires conversation, that's fun and engaging (if also bizarre). You could also make a game about running a Public Access TV network, or a game that takes place backstage of a Public Access TV show, or command police raid on a suspicious apparently-terrorist Public Access TV show, or... just about anything. Have fun with it! Get creative!

Competition Begins: July 1st
Competition Ends: July 31st, midnight (in your timezone)

If you wish to enter, your entry must be in by midnight, July 31st, on the SA GameDev wiki. The judges will then begin judging, and we'll see who wins.

How do I submit my entries?

  • Go to the SA GameDev wiki and make an account. GET THIS DONE BEFORE MIDNIGHT ON ENTRY DAY, seriously. Make sure you can log in and edit a page.
  • Make a page for your team. Try and choose a name you'll add to in successive years, so that all your entries end up grouped (assuming you keep working with the same team).
  • Make sure this page includes: a download or where-to-play link, instructions, and a few screenshots. Ideally a youtube video as well.
  • (MORE TO COME)

This sounds fun, but what if I don't have the slightest idea how maku gamu?

Don't worry about it! Tons of people have entered this without ever having made a game before, and they pretty much all had a blast doing it. That's a huge part of why we run it every year. It's a great excuse to finally take the plunge and commit to making something, and it's an even better motivation to actually FINISH that something. So give it a go! We usually have people spanning the gamut of skillsets, from absolute novices to super experienced types, and you'd be surprised how often it's the novices or lesser known types that actually win.

Tools that might help:
Just remember, if the judge can't get your entry to work? You're gonna get a bit fat zero. So make sure it's easy to play. Previous winners of the SA Gamer's Choice especially have almost all had web-playable builds / not too many average folks are willing to download an exe these days. The judges are less demanding, and downloads are fine, but they might be on Mac or PC / have issues with your entry if it requires crazy DLLs.

Judging And Winning

The competition has two ways of winning. First is via judging. Our group of volunteer judges will sit down with all of the games, play them through, and rate them on the following scales...

Visuals (10 points) - How attractive is your game? Is it pleasant to look at, or does it make eyeballs bleed (in a bad way)?
Audio (10 points) - Does the game's sound pull you into the game? Is it whatever the game feels like it needs?
Fun (20 points) - Is the game entertaining/engaging? Does it draw players in, and make them want to complete the game?
Polish (10 points) - Is the game well put-together? Is it stable, and juicy? Does it feel "complete"?
Innovation (10 points) - Is it a generic corridor shooter/platformer/whatever, or does it really try to do something original with the theme?
Theme Adherence (30 points) - Does this feel like a game that makes good use of the theme? Or does it feel like the theming was sticky-taped on top of a game made for another purpose?
Story (10 points) - Does the game tell the story it sets out to tell? Is it well-executed/engaging?

... we add the category scores up for each game to a final total. From that, we choose the winners (typically a top 3, etc). We ALSO skim the top 10-20 games off the top, and those become the poll options for a player-chosen SA Gamer's Choice award. Sometimes the same game wins both, other times, it's totally different, and each tends to have its own prizes.

As you can see, theme adherence and fun are most important. So bake those brains, and make sure you have a compelling use of the theme that's both cool and fun. Easy, right?

Those that fail to submit an entry by the end, even a bad entry, shall have their True Names etched on The Wall Of Shame forever more, redeemable ONLY by submitting an entry to a future SA GameDev.

(and yes, any team member can be a member of as many teams as they like - this is especially handy for musicians, voice actors, certain artists, etc)

Known Judges:
  • Innerguard
  • Leif.
  • poemdexter
  • seiken (if he can't think of an idea)
  • Tube
  • Kunzelman
  • Polo-Rican
  • SharpenedSpoonv2
All judges are volunteers, and you can not compete AND judge. We'd prefer judges with experience in the field - indies with released titles, AAA or mobile industry folks, you know the drill.

Known Prizes:

  • Stencyl Studio License (x2)
  • Unity 3D Pro License (x1)
  • $100 for the first place winner and $50 for Gamer's Choice, and possible runner up prizes if it's a close call (AG3)
  • $30 worth of steam game of winners choice for the best/most humourous use of Jebediah Kerman from Kerbal Space Program (Innerguard)
  • A copy of Door Kickers on Steam for anyone who makes a public access FMV game remake of the original Police Quest SWAT. Yeah, SWAT 1. With the gun-toting grandma hiding in the yard. (Leif.)
  • $200 #SAGameDev prize (poemdexter, details below)
  • 20+ Steam game keys (Ulta, details below)
  • Show Us Your Privates: I've learned a ton by reading other people's code, let us see yours! Game that releases source code showing off the most novel or useful technique, under a BSD/Apache license. Will want help from actual gamefolk to determine what's really useful. (Subjunctive)
  • Unfunny Web Joke: lots of games are delivered over the web, but most don't use the web. Pull in YouTube content, have quests to get Twitter retweets, some FB integration that doesn't make me angry, generate levels from web page structure, mash up some Wikipedia stuff; most of the Internet is public-access quality, mine that gold! Best per judges' rankings, is-that-webby-enough at my unimpeachable discretion. (Subjunctive)
  • Go Big or Go Home: best game (per judges' rankings) that's backed by a before July 1. (Subjunctive)
  • Ridiculously huge texture collection on a DVD to the best entry from a newcomer that uses some form of 3D. 2.81gb of all sorts of textures, mostly with diffuse/normal/spec/height etc maps. (Enos Shenk)
  • You Tried and Spectacularly Failed: I will give 1000 dogecoins to the person in last place who actually finishes a game. (Jo)
  • I Can Make It On My Own - $25 to the best (as determined by judges) game made completely solo. This means you didn't get anyone else to make stuff for you during the competition. You can still have used other free assets or whatever from other places, but nobody doing anything for the competition specifically. (sighnoceros)
  • Lost in Translation - $25 to a completed game made by a team that clearly did not understand the theme (as chosen by me, but likely a game with a very low Theme Adherence score). (sighnoceros)
  • Kid's Gonna Be a Star - $25 to a game of my choice from a novice game dev that shows a lot of promise. (sighnoceros)
  • Judge Dread - $25 to a game of my choice that I feel deserved a better score than it got. (sighnoceros)
  • Diamond in the Rough - $25 to a game of my choice that I like despite poor audio-visual presentation. (sighnoceros)
  • Polished Turd - $25 to a game of my choice that I didn't like but looks GRRRRRRREEAT! (sighnoceros)
  • A steam copy of Space Hulk for the best representation of Weird Al in UHF (in the spirit of Public TV and all) (ClownSyndrome)
  • A steam copy of Thomas was alone for a game that features the best use of the flying stone head from Zardoz (ClownSyndrome)

Almost all prizes come from you guys. If you want to put one up - cash, a gift card, a Steam game, whatever - just say so, and also post some kinda contact detail we can use to direct the winners to you at the end. Prizes can be awarded for ANYTHING... by default, we'll put them toward the 1/2/3rd slots and Gamer's Choice, but if you want to offer a bounty for the best underwater stealth escort mission, or the most convincing kitten simulation, or you want to assign a prize to the absolute WORST animation in a game, whatever, go for it.

Extra complicated prizes:

Ulta posted:

So I to clarify, half of the the games I have offered to will go to the best Twine game (as determined by the judges). The winner will get to chose what games they want. Then the best game made by someone who has not made a game before (as determined by the judges) will get the half of the rest. The second place game made by someone who has not made a game before (as determined by the judges) will get the remaining games. In the event that no one makes a Twine game, then the pool transfers to the no game before winnings. If for some reason, neither of these conditions are met, I'll just post the codes in the thread and hang my head in shame.

Ulta posted:

Ok I have a TON of unused Steam keys from various bundles. If it's cool I'd like to offer up the following as prizes.

Solar 2
Nightsky
Dungeon Defenders
Frozen Synapse
Anodyne
Incredipede
The Bard's Tale
Organ Trail
Broken Sword
Anomaly Korea
Awesomenauts
Wanderlust: Rebirth
Little Inferno
Hotline Miami
Tiny and Big in Grandpa's Leftovers
BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien
Reus
Dead Space
To the Moon
Atom Zombie Smasher
Gratuitous Space Battles

Maybe split these up a bit, but I would like to offer a prize for a Twine game and maybe something for "Best First Game"

Voting will be allowed by anyone NOT with an entry and also hanging out in the #SAGameDev channel on synirc. That means if you hit the wall of shame, you can still participate by showering some lucky team in dollar bills! Voting will occur during the judging phase of SAGDC.

Also, a small piece of advice if you are joining a team, or attempting to recruit members. Coordination and Communication are vital. This will be important no matter your potential role. Likely no team will have a team coordinator so it will fall upon each member to make sure they stay in touch with the rest of the team. Talking to your colleagues will keep everyone on the same page and it is also a fantastic motivator. So whether it is on IRC, a Skype Chat, or Email make sure to stay in contact with your team. We're all going to be running around with too much to do and not enough time, some of us have 2 jobs, some have kids, others will have sudden plans or injuries. So talk, talk, talk. Oh and have fun or something.

That's uh... a unique theme idea. I kind of want to try and do a take on my idea from last year as kind of an attempt at redeeming it (Cthulu Teaches Culting), still want to revisit it but never had the time. Assuming it wasn't using a bunch of pre-created assets and code and the like would that be okay? Obviously would need to do lots more in order to make it work with this years theme but I'm sure a malevolent force could use public television as a means of brainwashing and subversion...

I'm probably being an idiot so feel free to let me know, if not then I'll give it a go again, I'm sure nothing can go horribly wrong!

Yes, that would be fine. It'd fall under the heading of "using pre-existing art and engine", just like other teams might use googled art, or placeholder art from other games, pre-existing engines, etc.

Also, this year's theme came from the GameDev IRC. They did a big brainstorming session, and the result seemed neato to me, so here we are!

I'm in and looking to redeem myself from the unholy shitfest that was last year's entry!

With that said, come join us on IRC. #SAGameDev on Synirc! (For those having trouble connecting, use contego.ny.synirc.net, envy.il.synirc.net, or one of the other mirrors listed on the site.)

I am a coder and wouldn't mind working with an artist/sound person, but I'm not confident enough in my ability not to pull down another person. If you are an artist and are seriously desperate for a code partner, maybe we can throw our dreams into the fire together!

I will be helping goons as best I can on the IRC channel with Java or Unity questions while simultaneously working on Knob Ross's The Rage of Painting.

I'm also available by e-mail at jo.jcat [at] gmail or by PMs here. Good luck, everyone.

Added. We'll probably have some GameMaker licenses sponsored our way again, so hopefully someone makes a game with GameMaker and will actually enjoy those prizes.

I'm down for this. Can't say that I'll be with Team Punch The Moon (I can't speak for the whole team but there's a Good Reason why they might not compete this year).

That means I might be doing it solo this year. Fortunately, if I'm going this route at least I don't have to worry about the team dropping out and having to make a COMPLETE ATROCITY in the last few days like last year.

On the other hand, considering the theme, I might have to have a similar vibe to what I did last year.

(I wonder how many "Check It Out With Dr Steve Brule: The Video Game" we'll see...)

I make music and I'm available to do soundtracks or audio. You can hear examples of stuff I've made at my Soundcloud or Bandcamp.

I like making music in all sorts of different styles, so feel free to PM me to see if I'd be a good fit for your project.

P.S. Hey Shalinor, can musicians still contribute to multiple teams like last year? I don't see it in the OP.

Well now.

There's nothing quite like contributing four entirely different styles of music to four entirely different projects. I'm excited to do it again! Maybe I'll even learn Unity and try to contribute my own, semi-functional game.

Happy birthday!

I've been waiting all day to see if this thread would appear! I doubt I will actually complete a project as I never seem to have the motivation, but I'll be watching at the very least.

I honestly have no idea what I would do with this theme if I actually tried to put something together.

Shalinor posted:

Is the part I bolded meant to imply that an entry doesn't actually have to be about television at all, if it goes for "charmingly bad" instead?

edit: I really doubt I will be entering; please remove me from the "known entrants" list.

No avatar. I just saved you some load time. You're welcome.

I would very much like to participate this year on a team as a programmer.

I'm proficient in C, Java, Python, git, and Mercurial. But I am willing to learn just about anything. I have a little experience with most everything, really, and since C# is pretty close to Java I feel I can pick that up pretty quick if necessary (for instance, if a team selects me and they're using Unity).

I also bring a lot of professional release engineering and system administration skills to the table, so continuous automation, source control systems, and builds are all part of the deal.

I'm available on IRC (philosoraptor), Skype, any IM really, PMs, and email (which will be shared as part of being on a team).

I'm sure my code is messy, but I did recently do an asteroids clone.

Edit: \/ \/
Timezone: EST
I'm actually in Southern New Hampshire and can hang out with Massgoons.

Edit2: Picked up for TheOrange's team.

Snail on my head ready to go.

Wall of shamed myself last year, this year I will do better.

It might be worth noting that Gamemaker can do web builds, but only after purchasing the Pro. edition and then the $99 plugin.

Also for $1 RIGHT NOW The Humble RPG maker bundle can get you the latest RPG maker, usually 30 bucks. An easy tool that making RPGs, all be it in a certain style.

Twine is also an option for the non-programmer. It makes text based, choose your own adventure style games, but it can be bent and flexed some.

Also I will be making a game in Gamemaker and I know it's $99 for the HTML5 plugin because I bought it. As you can tell, I sorely need an artist.

Yup. You can also use NOT royaly-free sounds and music. We're not lawyers, we're not going to check ownership of stuff.

Only real issue is - if your game features recolored Mario sprites, we're PROBABLY going to see Mario, not <your magnum opus>, so I'd avoid using recognizable stolen art like that.

EDIT: Well, ok, Leif. there is literally a lawyer, but, I swear we won't care regardless. Nobody cares. Only matters much if you try and sell what you're making.

I'm proficient with pretty much any of the Adobe Suite programs. I'm learning Java and XML, but I suck at both right now. I'm learning Unity via tutorials. No better way to learn to make games than to start making them. I live on the US West Coast, so PST or near it would be preferable.

EDIT: Oops, that was meant to just be a URL, not an embedded video. Sorry folks! Also, I guess I should mention I'm looking for a coder. Preferably one who will let me look at code so I can learn as I go.

Also, I'm hosting the #SAGameDev Choice Awards. Any #SAGameDev people NOT participating in SAGDC can join me in #SAGameDev Choice Awards voting. I've been waiting for this thread to pop up! I've been teaching myself programming over the last ten months and while I'm still really novice I was hoping to be part of a team this year to see how it's really done. I'm a pretty fast learner so I shouldn't slow things down too much, I hope! Most of the coding I've done so far is in Java, but I'm also interesting in learning to use Unity.

Aside from coding, I have actual skill as a composer/musician, so I would be happy to do sounds/music for a project for a peek at the code.

I'll update this later with some samples but I'm at work right now!

P.S. Time zone is Japan.

After not being able to do this last year, I definitely want to to it this year. Since I don't have a team I'd like to cast myself as a freelancer willing to work on any project that'll have me. Most of my artistic ability is in 2D sprite work, pixel art, stuff like that, but I do know enough 3D stuff (mostly texture-mapping and materials) to get myself in trouble. Examples of my work over the past year are in a youtube video here. Engine-wise I am most comfortable with Unity and Game Maker Studio, and my language of choice now I guess would be C# (but I mostly just know it in a Unity context and I am by no means a great programmer or even a good one). I also do a little bit of sound work but it's limited to using BFXR.

I have PMs so feel free to drop me a line!

EDIT: Time zone is Eastern US

Woo, let's see if I can get something finished this year. Last year I tried working with a team but it fell apart cause we were all in different timezones. I'm probably gonna try go solo this year but if someone in or near UTC+10 wants to team up I could probably be easily convinced. I know C++, C#, and Java pretty well and can pick up most procedural languages pretty quick. I can't art for poo poo though.

You can have as many non-goons as you like in your team, one of you just needs to be able to post your entry here / in the submission system (more details later) when you're done.

I think I'll be using GameMaker this year (instead of trying to hack something together with javascript). I've already got the pro version + html export module though (got them cheap when YoYo were doing a sale). The export it does is pretty good (This was something I hacked together for the last Ludum Dare that uses Game Maker's HTML5 export). Look forward to giving it more use.
