If equipment is readily accessible and not mired in a miasma of 'pledge to keep supporting the game' hurdles I'll happily concede that CIG was only primarily interested in monetizing their alpha testing stage and they turned good guy once they shoved a product out the door.

In the meantime I'm gonna stick with the idea of emerging trends indicating future conduct.

People draw some kind of distinction between outright "pay money = you win" and "pay money = you avoid a year of 8 hour days of grinding before you can possibly beat the guy who paid money" and it kind of makes me scratch my head.

We have no idea what the grind is going to be, nor do we have any idea about how much of a force multiplier teamwork is, especially on a large scale.

Not talking about SC specifically there although yes I expect it will follow the pattern, just that's how it is in nearly all games that have a variable payment option. Not even restricted to RPGs. Really the only game I've ever had contact with where cash payments have no practical effect on your character's power has been Path of Exile. Even Marvel Heroes has an aspect of this although it's pretty mild compared to most others.

Given Crobert's obsession with perfection I wouldn't be surprised if Sataball and 0g in the default maps is pushed back as a few million is dumped into attempting to make the animations for navigating along walls and objects in float are tinkered with endlessly in an effort to make them appear natural.

That or tacking on "also assume all of the blockers that are preventing us from launching this thing also apply to Endersgame II" is something they're avoiding.

Because basically I don't give a poo poo about paying to avoid a grind. If I was still in school and gamed 8 hours a day I wouldn't pay for poo poo, but I'm basically much lazier now and game less.

That said, there's degrees of everything and something like Wargaming's model of awful f2p bullshit is far too obnoxious to get nickle and dimed to death with.

This also ignores, again, that the ships people drop $1k+ on come without gear. The $3500 Javelin comes entirely stripped. And they've said over and over again that the equipment on ships is where the timesink is going to be, not the base hulls. The gear on the lower priced ships is still the equivalent of starter stuff. I'll be quite surprised if they end up actually selling straight up good items or fitted ships in the VD store once the game launches.

(The joke is that the game isn't going to launch so there won't be anything to sell, obviously, har har har).

I do want to add that there's no way we'd be able to make ships look nearly as good without the expertise of my good friends and colleagues Nathan Dearsley and Neil Mcknight, without their combined knowledge and hard work, the ship development pipeline wouldn't be nearly as technically advanced and definitely wouldn't allow us such creative freedom

Quote 2:
And Bedrock - Our very own Nathan Dearsley played a huge part in the development of Alien Isolation, we're extreeemely lucky to have him on board for Star Citizen! As for the ship being a huge undertaking...it's probably the hardest thing I've ever made, but super rewarding!

Star Citizen, Derek Smart and the case of what $85mm will buy you

quote:

Smart obviously disagrees with that stance, but the reality is that with a game on the scope of what Star Citizen is, kinks in the process are going to happen. The snags we’re seeing in these crowdsourced games are the kinds of things that have always gone on, only it was all previously behind boardroom doors. That isn’t to say that an expectation of a clear line of view for how money is being spent isn’t an unreasonable request, but it these types of projects need to be viewed through a lens of reality.

There’s a lot of risk inherent in crowdsourcing, whether through Kickstarter or other avenues, and it isn’t literal investment. It’s a whole different sort of beast and the laws and standards surrounding it really haven’t caught up to the speed with which it’s being adopted. For every success like Shenmue there seem to be twenty Godus examples and unfortunately there’s not a lot of recourse out there for backers, even when concerns are legitimate. Reform does need to happen in this arena since there have been several big projects that have resulted in enthusiasts being taken for a ride, but that’s something that takes a lot of time, and until that need is fulfilled, backers have to be very aware of the risks they take when they pledge money.

That said, Star Citizen will be impressive if everything comes together correctly and the team will be bringing the game to Cologne next month for GamesCon. It’s a safe bet that the group will be working to alleviate concerns that have been arising, and hopefully, display some of the polish that they’ve been promising.

Controversy Over Star Citizen Continues To Capture The Limelight

quote:

Perhaps he’s mad because Chris Roberts has an idea that will likely surpass anything he’s ever created. Or maybe he really does see lying and misinformation and wants to crusade for us. As an aside, because he directly compares Star Citizen to his own game, Line of Defense, it does indeed look as if he’s promoting his own game at the behest of Star Citizen. There are plenty of other examples that could have been used had he wanted to (Evochron Mercenary or No Man’s Sky anyone?). There’s no need to bring your own IP into this without it seeming like there’s an ulterior motive of some sort, regardless of how it’s handled. It does look like a PR grab from a certain angle.

But there are definite real concerns hidden in Smart’s posts, and they resonate in many different people. There are reasons to like Star Citizen and reasons to abhor it. We like it for the idea of what it might become. We hate it because it’s not here yet and we can’t truly know if it ever will be completed until the time comes. It’s scary to back any project like this. Just as its scary to invest in companies futures or gamble, or anything of the sort. There’s an uncertainty surrounding it that has become the locus of attention, and rightfully so for those that have spent a lot of money on an unreleased game.
...
That isn’t to say that more transparency wouldn’t be a good thing. Because it would be great for everyone. But flailing your arms and yelling might not be the best way to get the proper attention you want.

Indeed. I wouldn't have thought they would release a floor plan, it certainly makes it easier to track fluctuations, now we just need the other offices.
Anyways - for a floor plan, there's a lot of spelling errors present, you would think HR would get something as easy as employee names right, especially if this document is published outside.

Heh.

I dunno, I'm really starting to wonder about all this, it's all very odd.

Leaving to one side the primary issue of meeting all these promises for the game and reaching release.

What happens if you start with a small company, massively expand yet the customer support staff (especially) remain in their rolls due to their allegiance and loyalty to the God Emperor. Is there just going to be a constant series of public relations fuckups right up to release and beyond (if it makes it that far). At the end of that interview Chris Roberts is almost begging news outlets to change their story from FPS delayed indefinitely to "it's just delayed a tiny bit".

Banning and refunding Derek Smart, is actually two gently caress ups, slating him in a forum post is a third. How do you gently caress up one event in three separate ways? This wasn't a live interview, people had time to think things through, how does that happen? At this point I think there is a slight but serious possibly that :lesnick: is trying to get fired, maybe he knows it's all going to go terribly wrong and he wants out but can't bring himself to resign.

What they are is already defined in the TOS you have to agree to with every purchase:
Your payment (“Pledge”) is a deposit to be used for (a) the production and delivery cost for the relevant pledge items (“Pledge Item Cost”), and (b) the development and production cost of the Game, including the costs of operating and hosting the Game, the Website and the other RSI Services, and RSI’s corporate expenses associated with the foregoing (the “Game Cost”).

And what protects them from refunds and small claims are the other terms you also agree to with each purchase in the same document, such as the binding arbitration clause and the refund policy.
