The number of actually significant characters who die isn't that much tbh with you. One principal character dies in the first book, most of the series' reputation comes from that. Otherwise it's usually characters who are important to the political scene but not the focus of their own chapters.

but still gotta have lots of characters killed off for no really good reason

I prefer a story that advances the plot rather than just eliminates characters

I can play video games that do that

honestly the problem with the books at the moment is there are far too many characters, and the story is bloated to hell

most of the big character deaths have a big impact in terms of the direction of the plot / other character arcs

yeah, basically. the bloat meant that a bunch of chapters that would have been a good climax got pushed to the next (unpublished) book

The nudity and goriness do seem to be gratuitous, but this is HBO. If the show was made by CBS we wouldn't be presented with that naked backbender at Joffery's wedding, but other major plot points would have to be left out. (see: Ygritte)

A great character with awesome impact on the plot dies (Dondarrion) so that a character that arguably most readers hate (Bitchybitch Stark) doesn't stay dead.

I enjoy how modern audiences take every character death and event in stories which don't go the way they want direct trolling intended to harm them because they think writers spend all their time thinking about how much they hate the people who run their lovely fan wiki. People are so navel gazing that all stories are about them. It's beautiful.

Remember ages ago, The Hound and Arya(?) run into the Brotherhood Without Banners and we learn Beric Dundarion (the dude Ned sent to catch The Mountain way back) got his rear end got killed, but that Red Priest dude (so he's part of the same dudes as the Red Lady who hangs out with Stannis) kept bringing him back to life? Red Priest Dude finds Caitlin Stark's body in the dumpster behind Frey Towers, so there you go.

Seems like it's way easier to enjoy the show having not read the books. Every person I've talked to who have read the books just cannot separate the two. "Well see, in the books.." or "That didn't happen in the books" or "There was so much more going on in the books during that scene" and it's like man you guys are insufferable. Why even watch the show if all you're going to do is be disappointed and then wax on about how x,y, and especially z should have been included/changed/raped instead.

And most of these people are the ones who saw the first season or two and then decided they were such big fans that they would read the books and now not only can they not enjoy the show but they're all super pissed at the fat man for being so slow in releasing the next book (though they've only been waiting like less than a year)

gnarlyhotep posted:

when characters die you can see it coming well it advance 95% of the time and it is fairly organic to the plot development. it's not just 'haha rocks fall, everybody dies' out of nowhere.

The only surprising death was Eddard Stark, but even then you could tell he was going to get smacked down hard.

Who dies randomly just for shits with no plot advancement happening?

I did read it, by book 3 it was full of a bunch of characters that I was hoping would die but for some reason had escaped the axe. I think by that point I even hated Arya.

the problem with game of thrones is that there are so many stupid pointless characters to follow and all of them either: have no development whatsoever and remain unlikeable, are pretty unlikeable and gradually become more unlikeable, used to be cool and are now lovely and boring, or are total badasses and die. there's no middle ground, nobody is ever successful so no progress is made on any sort of plot, GRRM is going to write 5 more books without anything exciting happening since the world is about to be buried in snow and all these fuckfaces will starve to death.
