Nelson was struck by lightning on January 2nd, 2014, at the Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club. Playing with a handicap of 12, and in an insurmountable lead over his friends, investigators believe that Nelson was hit in the left ear by the bolt - also injuring former co-star Emilio Estevez. The blast tore off Nelson's fingerless gloves, and left his body extensively scorched where various lapels and safety pins, embedded in his trademark denim jacket, made contact with his skin.

The cause of death was attributed to cardiac arrest and shock brought on by extensive burns. Nelson's caddy, Anthony Michael Hall, claims that Nelson whispered, "Eat my shorts" before losing consciousness.
