Ace Combat 04 will be a spectacular introduction to the series, and by the time you finish 5, you'll be pacing in front of the mailbox waiting for Zero to arrive. You're in for quite a ride, and I'm a little jealous that I can't play them all again for the first time.
I'd actually recommend playing AC4 first because it's such a slog compared to later games. AC5 was my first Ace Combat so playing AC4 and noticing that the vast majority of the missions were just "score as many points as possible in 15/20 minutes" compared to the shorter and more structured missions of AC5 was such a downer.

I unlocked one of the challenge jets today! The one for getting kills in Data Link mode?

I'm really loving this game when it decides to let me connect to a room. When it doesn't I like it very slightly less.

Playing Ace Combat 4 and holy poo poo is the story kind of bleak. I'm on mission 4 or so I think? I really like the way it's written.

Also I get to shoot silly amounts of missiles at people and watch them blow up!

Its kind of strange to go back to a game like Ace Combat 4 and realize it was released a decade ago. I still think it holds up really drat well.

depends on your flying style......what plane type/play style is your favorite?

At this rate, whatever'll let me S-rank fastest; my only successful Moby Dick sortie was a B. I like ground-pounding, but I'm already working my way through the challenges for the Morgan and the F-16 DR, and I'd definitely like to be able to actively take on the emergency target fighters instead of having to constantly evade their missiles while looking for remaining ground targets... in the F-4G I already find it hard enough to take on even the regular fighters.

The Mirage 2000-5 is kind of crappy because I've got mine at level 3 and it still often needs an extra missile to kill a target that I wouldn't need if I was flying an attacker or fighter, depending on what I'm shooting at. The F-14A is pretty good though, it's got nice damage and unless you go straight for the F-15C, it's going to be the fastest plane you can fly for a good while. The SU-25TM is okay, but on the slow side, so it's kind of a sidegrade from the F-4G at first, since the F-4G is really fast for an attacker, but the SU-25TM gets 4AGMs which you might get a lot of use out of. It also leads to the SU-24M which is a good plane that I like a lot for ground attack.

To be honest though while there is a very obviously increasing level of power in planes as you progress, I think once you get most planes to level 2 or 3, they're good enough that you can fly whatever looks cool and stay competitive.

Save for upgrading the DR or for buying the F-18. The DR has been my mainstay since I got it, and I don't plan on giving it up until I can afford the F-15E.

Also, remember that S-Ranking is as much a function of the rest of your team as you. Even if you have a legendary 65k game, if the rest of your team is scoring 8k you're doomed.

I got my second Moby Dick III tonight.

Almost 40k credits off an A rank (let me pick up these stragglers dammit!). Would've been 60k but I grinded too close to Aigaion a couple times. I seriously want to know how much you'd get off a MD3 with elite contract + forced sorties.

E: DR's a solid mid-range multirole. I just got to lvl 4 with it, can't wait to try out the SODs.

if you like flexibility...... go for mirage-->F-18-->A-10-->F-15E-->rafale path

F-15E, from my friend who flies an upgraded version says that thing is ridiculously fast, which is pretty important in high level play.

For me it doesn't help that the F-16C's 4AAMs are clearly not effective at taking the emergency targets and the only value I've found in them has been hitting engines during Moby Dick sorties. At least the Mirage 2000-5 is cheap compared to the F-14A (most of my credits) or the Su-25TM (two thirds thereof)... I'm gonna try and grind out the DR and see what my progress looks like, since the research is complete on all three airframes that I could buy have yet to buy.

Any goon room going ATM?

be specific with your plane purchase. The upgrade tree pretty much upgrades everything thats available (randomly) so by being specific, you funnel down what upgrade you'd want to get.
(this will only get worse after you reach 1st LT. since that's when weapon research gets unlocked)

Went with the Mirage (cheapest) and upgraded the F-4G and F-16C once each to level 2, now at almost 48k credits -- so a Mirage 2000-5 with six 4AGMs, a F-16C with twelve 4AAMs for Moby Dick engines, a F-4G with six LAGMs for range, and the F-16 DR as my otherwise default.

The multiplayer on this is pretty fun. Especially killstealing high-value targets from players who've played a hundred times as much as I have.

My first Aigaion mission I paid no attention to the time limit at all and wasted the entire mission trying to kill the escort cruisers. Whoops. :downs: On the other hand I doubt we would have won even if I'd done it right since I still ended up with like the third highest score.

Should I focus on leveling up my stock F14 or the F14 -ZP-? Statwise the ZP is significantly superior in every category, and it looks cooler, so it's become my standard fighter, but I'm afraid I might be loving up somehow by relying on it.

I'm happy now.

Three or so times now I was thinking of posting a long-winded rant on why I don't like the Mirage as much as some of my other craft but how I feel like I have no choice but to fly it because of how 90% of the targets in any given mission are ground targets, most of which take more punishment than AA guns or SAMs.

Turns out my level 3 F-15C deals a little bit more ground damage than the level 4 Mirage. Just flew it twice in a row and consistently scored just as much as I would have with the Mirage and its 4AGMs (literally my first F-15C outing tonight I got near exactly as many points as I did five minutes prior with said Mirage).

Finally changed my nickname from "Mercenary" thanks to this, I'm now an "Eagle Driver". Also saw a guy on my team one round get MVP by a very wide margin with the Strike Eagle - I definitely need that poo poo.

The only problem I see is the starting SP weapon for the Zipang F-14 isn't as useful as the one for the stock version. Whereas normal F-14 can launch fast-moving missiles at much longer range than standard missiles, Zipang gets... basically a second set of standard missiles, from what little I've used of them. I can see how that could be useful too but with how short-ranged they've always been you really want something better.

FAEB's will net you tons of kills if used correctly. They hit large clusters of targets and one shot all but the hardened ones. Good tip is to nose up, afterburn and use the right stick so you can see where its going. You can usually destroy a couple easy groups before anyone else is in missile range.

I love the a-10. Best map for it might be the alps though. That's a very ground-heavy mission.

Apparently Avalon Dam site/v2 control facility wasnt found until its too late because the entire facility was hidden under the dam and covered with water at all time, so in June 20th 1995, no weapon inspector found anything in the area. It wasnt until the day of launch, they expelled the water and the facility was exposed.
