When it comes to raiding, I'm a bit sad I can't sail down the Nile. (I'm also a bit mystified as to how the Nile which is more than a kilometer wide at some points is less of a defence than the Seine.)

E: And also rebuild / restore the ancient Nile-Red Sea Canal to go raid India. Wikipedia tells us it was closed about a century before the Old Gods start so it may still be salvageable. I know Vicky 2 has making canals but I wonder if that can be added via a mod in CK2.

Yes I've heard of this mythical place of Hindustan on the other side of the Muslem's empire, maybe I should sail there one day and raise a runestone and teach about the only true gods that protect Midgardr from the horrors that live upon Yggdrasil.

Grim's knowledge of battle, having fought on the battle lines with his housecarls prompts him to improve on how they fight. This surely will give Skåne the tools to continue their success in the future. However this proves to be the last thing he dies from the wounds still aching him from the great northern war he fought to protect the integrity of Skåne and his family. The Vogelius estate is divided up among the children of Grim, the leading position of the family goes to Sivard, Grim's favorite son who fought in the battles together with his father who just as his father took damage in the battles protecting his kin from the invading cross worshipers which still pains him.

Inge, the second son of Grim however a shame upon the family, during the wars he betrayed his father and converted to the worship of Christ to increase his influence with the Danish king. The Danish king of course wanted to reward Inge and when it came upon the matter of succession the Danish king enforced that Själland would go to Inge and not only Bornholm. Sivard worrying that his little brother might not be accepted by the men in Blekinge he ignores that headache for the moment.

A year later when the situation stabilizes in the duchy, Sivard reminds the King the previous errors of the Danish kings when they opposed their strong nobles in the land and then pushes trough his demands to seize back Själland which is his by birthright. Inge being left to the wolves in Skåne has nothing to oppose his older brother and the war is short and without blood as no one dares to oppose the experienced troops from Trelleborg.

Shortly afterwards news reach that the Duke of Jylland inherits Somerset in England, the old Norse involvement in the British Isles still exist pretty strong in both the Norwegian and Danish noble families, with both having several belongings there.

The Pope becomes a puppet of the Emperor of Germany, or as they call it the Holy Roman Empire. To add salt to the injury his Imperial Majesty decides its fit to name the Pope his Master of the Horse. The dealings of these southerners in the eyes of Sivard was indeed weird and he found it distasteful that these had come to replace the Norse faith.

After some scribbling with notes between the Polish and Danish thrones, it comes forward that right now it looks like as if the Danish young King will inherit the Polish crown. It still a distant future and it might never happen but Sivard feel for his family's sake he can't let it down to chance and orders the improvement of Trelleborg's Housecarl training ground even though of the expenses it would pose to the treasury.

Many years pass, with nothing of note happening. The blood in Sivard and his men starts to boil as the time passes with no conflicts, the urge to draw their swords became ever so greater. And even though ill-prepared and without reason Sivard decides to invade their neighbour, Sweden, for their island of Gotland.

At the same time as the declaration of war happens, a Polish noble of the family Piast who had a claim on the Swedish crown sees his opportunity and tries to seize it. He promises Sivard that if he gets the Swedish crown that Öland shall be made his if Sivard supports Maslaw claim to Sweden. Sivard immediately heads of with his most trusted troops towards the battle taking place in Värend to support the pole.

The battle is large and bloody as thousands upon thousands of troops clash together. Sivard makes a name for himself as The Berserker of Värend, striking fear into every Swedish man that opposed him. Fueled by his anger and the blessings of Odin he ignores his grievous wounds from the past wars and fights remarkably and devastate the Swedish army together with the Piasts.

With the Swedes defeated the nobles of the Kingdom forces their King to give up his thrown to the claimant as the Stenkiling proved to not be able to defend his realm. However as Sivard goes to King Maslaw of Sweden to remind him of his debt, he tells the Jarl that he should be happy that he isn't executed for being pagan filth. Furious Sivard takes his men and invades Sweden yet again, even going so far to emptying his coffers to hire Bulgarian mercenaries.

Unfortunately King Maslaw was prepared and his troops overwhelms the Scanian troops.

Maslaw being a member of the royal house of the Polish Kingdom of course gets promised assistance from his family but they being busy with a huge revolt will pose no threat to the Scanian campaign. As a way to try and make the Swedes split their troops thin, Sivard decides to go and raid Uppsala and later actually siege Öland.

But this strategy don't pay off and the Swedish troops soon enough catches wind of it and engages the Bulgarian mercenaries put on Öland and defeats them. The Bulgarians even manages to find a bottleneck to fight out of but it is not enough as they are still overwhelmed.

As Sivard has grown old, his wounds pain him and with the string of defeats he looses his status as a berserker. With the morale of both Sivard and his men down he have no choice but to end the war and surrender to King Maslaw.

As the war ends and Sivard returns home he sees his son Grim in his bed dead and murdered. Inge the brother of Sivard didn't even try to hide the fact he was the culprit, confident that he being righteous christian and as such nothing can happen to him. Sivard immediately chases after him but Inge flees to the court of Valdemar in Norway, the count of Bergenhus. In return Sivard takes Inge's wife Bodil from his dungeons and hangs her in the name of the Allfather, may she enjoy her life in Hel as Inge has to enjoy his in the mountains of Norway.

The years pass and the catholics talk of a great war for the holy land where their god was born. In the meantime Sivard starts his own war against the Finns in order to expand himself before the Valkyries come to fetch him. Not much resistance is met as the Vikings land and seize the county.

And as we end this chapter, we can see the Rus kingdom and the finish Kingdom being formed, and it will be interesting to see the future of this region.

Yeah I'm kinda unlucky though. This is probably first time I see a stable Finland like this form, usually Sweden, Russia or Estonia expands into it.
Trying to RP as a Norse, this scenario is quite hard as everything is consolidated so I can't easily attack small states. I mean I can't sit and do nothing for 10-20 years! Some blood needs to be spilt!

Tanks are kinda wasted on invading the USSR

Our Jarl, Sivard, great news of the year 1145 is that his concubine gives birth to two healthy babies, twin brother and sister. Less so great seems to be that the cross worshipers was successful in their holy war against the moslem about a city in the land of sand. The main contributor of these wars were the German Empire, the emperor declares the Kingdom of Jerusalem, named after the city and places one of his dynasty members, a Salian, on the throne.

I created and released Jerusalem manually later, thought it would be more interesting.)

The Jarldom rarely saw peace and as such Sivard saw it fit to expand upon the training grounds to field a even bigger and stronger army of housecarls. The loss of the holy city of Jerusalem was taken quite hard by the local nearby Arabic rulers and the caliphate soon enough decides to strike back at the German invaders.

However Jarl Sivard has been struggling with his horrible wounds from previous wars and finally succumb to a horrible fever. His two sons inherit this titles and the new Jarl of Skåne is his oldest son Gnupa. Long live Jarl Gnupa! Amusingly the one that takes the place of Regent for Gnupa is the last descendant of the af Bornholm family, the catholic family that once ruled the Duchy of Skåne that fought against the Vogelius.

Christian Jensen, the last living of his family has since long realized his fore fathers mistakes and adopted Norse paganism as the one true faith. Being highly skilled in stewardship he had served as the late Jarl's steward for a long time. And now he continues on in service of the Vogelius Family as the regent of Gnupa.

However being a young boy holding Skåne the King Ernst of Denmark hopes that this would make Skåne weak and with a regent of a former catholic and rival family that the matter would be easy to push trough. However he was wrong, Christian shows his zealous dedication to the new ways he had adopted and his loyalty to the Jarldom of Skåne and refuses the demands of his liege. The war is over before it even started, Christian charges with the troops into the capital of the Danish king situated on Halland.

Rumors are spreading from Desmond that the Vogelius member placed there to rule has been out raiding and brought back home loads of gold. The Danish king just been defeated can do nothing to enforce his law to the distant parts of his realm. The regent decides that a member of that part of the line would make a suitable wife for Gnupa as he grows up. The sister of Martha of Desmond is chosen, a quick little girl that would serve the coming Jarl well.

Even though as an achievement raising a rune-stone is, it is quite cumbersome as new ways to write down history are conceived. The latest fad being to write down using ink and parchments. The people of all of Scandinavia quickly adopts this new revolutionary way of writing. However Regent Christian is very inclined in still teaching little Gnupa in how to write with runes as per tradition, so all that changes for the Jarldom of Skåne is the medium on which it is written.

While Gnupa is still being educated in Trelleborg Christian sends of a Viking commander eager for adventure to fight in Finland and grab more land before it gets taken by someone else.

Gnupa don't know what Zoroastrian even is but he is still taught how the Mazdaki, once a heresy, has come to replace the Zoroastrian faith.

Gnupa as a young boy loves food, more than anything giving his guardian various of problems to deal with. While the young boy is having fun in the kitchen Christian launches an invasion of Åland, aiming to get a beach head on the Swedish capital for the next time they have a war and end it quickly before the future allies of Sweden can come to her aid. As the Scanian troops gears for war, so does the rest of the Catholic world as the Arabs declare their holy war for their sacred city.

So much blood for a city in the sands, it puzzled the Vikings of Skåne. however it couldn't have been better timed as this meant that Sweden would have no holy orders at their disposals in order to fight the pagans invading their island.

The first battle does not bode well, the Swedes have the advantage in numbers and military expertise. However the soldiers of the battle spoke off how an one eyes old man rode with the cavalry to victory against all odds. A second wave strikes against the Vikings however their morale was soaring from the initial victory and they chase the Swedes back down to the water and follows them to Uppsala.

While the Scanians are busy fighting Sweden, King Ernst find it perfect time to raise the law of crown authority in the kingdom.

The education of Gnupa continues, however he grows a quite bad trait for being the leader of the Vogelius family. He grows cynical of the norse ways and starts questioning the Gydja's of their practices. Luckily the Guardian takes notice of it and beats this horrible behavior out of Gnupa.

Though suddenly the Queen of Poland passes away, wife of Einar of Denmark, Father of King Ernst "the Fat" of Denmark and the only legitimate heir to the Polish throne. As such King Ernst realm more than doubles in the blink of an eye.

Now.... The Jarl of Skåne is no longer the largest ruler in the no longer weak Kingdom of Denmark....

Sorry for a short one, since Charlemagne is releasing tomorrow I didn't have much time to double check stuff or write anything extensively :/
Hopefully its still readable.

Edit: Also funny thing I noticed but forgot to take picture of is that the Kingdom of Castile is ruled by a Swedish dynasty. Huh, I guess it sucked too much up here in the cold Scandies :D

Ernst of Denmark now as well King of Poland a lot more families are introduced to the realm of the Estrids. The Kingdom of Denmark is no longer just a struggle between the Estrids and the Vogelius families fighting over power in the kingdom. With this influx of polish noblemen with their own ambitions, the stability of the realm were threatened. The Jihad of Jerusalem ends in failure as the King of Jerusalem is a close kin of the Roman Emperor, as such is given his support to defend their sacred city. The growth of our Jarl Gnupa continues on and he becomes content with his position in life, being one of the wealthiest subjects of the Danish King and most influential he doesn't see the need of expansion.

In the following year of 1159, it seems to be a year of war and conflict. The Queen of France goes to war with England over some of the old Normandy demesne and half of Norway raises in revolt against their king, led by the Duke of Trøndelag. Regent Christian sees his opportunity to do a right wrong, take back Mære from the cross worshippers in Naumdal. An old site of worship by the norse faithful, Christian saw it time to take it back under a ruler who would revive the place to its old use.

The warriors of Skåne sail in on the fjords of Naumdal, the morning mist still hanging in the air as they land and head to the settlements to seize them from the Norwegian rulers. As news reached the Norwegians they all started converging of beating back the heathens, putting aside their squabbles internally. The lords reach the army of Christian in May as the warmth is returning to Scandinavia. The army started as Four-thousand men strong but thanks to the cold 200 dies off so the Scanian Vikings are facing 3800 men against their own 3300. Its a long series of skirmishes before the Norwegian soldiers have enough and retreat away to let Naumdal to fall to its faith.

During the conflicts in the north however, in the year of 1160, Gnupa's mother dies of Smallpox.

Two years later, Gnupa and his twin sister reaches adulthood, he becoming a detached priest while his sister turning into a grey eminence. Now grown up, Jarl Gnupa follows through his Regent's bethrothral and marries Ellinor, the smart and promising daughter of the Chieftess of Desmond. However shortly after this marriage, a woman claiming to be Vølva named Anna arrives at our Jarl's court, Gnupa decides she is more than welcome to stay, so far to even taking her into his bed. Rumors spread around the court how she has put Gnupa under her galdr, or as the non-norse would say, spell or witchcraft. She is eventually also given the temple of Mære and the entire county of Naumdal as a reward for her "services".

As Gnupa takes on the reigns of the Jarldom, the focus changes to internal matters and taking care of his subjects and demesne, caring for his family's legacy. He starts with handing out the responsibility of managing the county of Satakunta to his vassal, Chieftain Kolli of Finland. News come from Halland that Ernst, King of Denmark has expelled all people who adhere to the Jewish faith from his realm. A caravan from far away land arrives at Trelleborg asking to enter the fortress, Gnupa curious of these different looking men invites them in to hear of their tales and stories.

The merchant tells amazing stories about his home, a land so far away that not even the old Vikings traveled there, being even beyond Miklagard and even Særkland and Baghdad. The Norse court listening in on the stories and description of "Hindustan" were enthralled by the idea that there were still more places to discover, even further away than the furthest a Norse man has ever been, even further away than Baghdad. Some even started to dream about going out on adventure yet again, however Gnupa was content with just hearing these stories with a goblet of wine in his hand and the fireplace crackling.

As the merchant has to leave yet again, he offers his host a lavish gift, a complete loyal thrall who would serve Gnupa at all times. With the Hávamál having strong stanzas on disloyalty and the foul deeds of deception, loyalty was something very highly regarded within Skåne and as such Gnupa accepts the gift. The thrall reveals his name is Gao, coming from a tribe in Blåland and that he would serve the Jarl until he meets his end. Gnupa appoints him Marshal and Hirdsman, keeping him at his side at all times they grew a deep friendship and trust over the years.

The King of the Holy Lands, Hermann of Jerusalem is yet again at war with the Fatamids in the year of 1163, however his kin and ally in the Holy Roman Empire does not seem to aid him any support in fighting that war so it might be the end of the Christian Kingdom in the land of Muslims. The Reconquista seem to still be at a stalemate, the Argonese realms have united again under one banner and the Kingdom of Léon is the strongest one with the Swedish Kingdom of Castille being the wildcard.. The Queen of France won the war against the English taking back land from Normandy, the English now also seem to be under pressure form upset vassals.

A closer look on Vogelius own demesne show terrible news, Martha of Desmond, daughter of Karl the original Chieftain seem to be the last Vogelius to rule in the county. The heir is her son, but of her late husbands dynasty. He's faithful to Romuvan religion, a pagan predominant in the Baltic coast. The marriage came from Karl and Grim's alliance with the Lithuanian Pagan King to get his aid and it has now ended with Karl's legacy disappearing, never did they think that it would end like this.

The population of Skåne's realm is growing as it is stable under the rule of Gnupa without war and with a steady increasing wealth. Several Scanian men and women decide to pick up merchant profession and migrate to the nearby island of Rana for the opportunities it poses and how much closer it is to the German empire where most of Europe's wealth lie. The problem however this causes is strife and conflict between the Pommeranian nobles and the Scanian nobles. Catholicism was still the major faith of the population, and even though the population viewed themselves as Vikings, going to new places for trade, adventure or exploits they were still faithful Christians. But the duke of Obotritia ignored this and used the excuse of heathenry to persecute the Scanian merchants.

It does not take long before this dispute ends in war, with the huge Scanian Heathen army have to fight of the Holy Order of Knights Hospatilier once again. Gnupa takes heavy losses but the right flank manages to find a narrow point to fight the Knights on to keep them at bay while the center of the Danish troops press forward with full strength.

The narrow point was all that the troops on the right flank needed, it gave time for the center front to break their enemies and then force back the right front enemies from the battlefield. With the right front under pressure from two flanks it eventually succumbs and they flee off the island. After that the fight ends quite shortly with only 2 000 troops surrounded by almost 10 000 Vikings charging at them. However the army surrounded, nowhere to flee the Duke is captured and as retribution of his crimes he's forced to cede Rana to Gnupa. The bishopric of Arkona on the island is transformed into a temple for the gods and given to Gnupa's twin sister Gudrun.

With this peace, stability returns to the people who calls themselves Scanian and security is ensured. Gnupa takes pride in the fact that you can freely travel to any part of his realm and that his subjects are safe. Later it becomes known that his first child is born, a daughter named Sigrid.

With peace returned the Jarl can go back to studying the realms far away from the north and a newly formed Andalusian Emirate peaks his interest. Yahaff known as "The Liberator" has formed his own catholic land inside the Muslim southern part of Iberia and he has been quite successful in establishing his own dominance.

The other Iberian kingdomss, bar the Argonese one have had Swedish influences, even so far to have Swedish people migrate there. The ruler of Castille have adopted the local culture but for a long time was Swedish and they still keep their Swedish dynasty name of "Stråben". The core realm of Skåne still remains the same, bar the inclusion of the island Rana, or Rügen, to the south.

However soon enough the peace is broken and the Danish-Polish kingdom declares a "Holy War" against the large Lithuanian Pagan kingdom to the north.

The battle lines are quickly drawn and the Lithuanians are quick to mobilize their tribes to defense. However the pagan nobles of Skåne demands action to be taken, the King is relying heavily on the levies that Gnupa provides through the feudal contract and they demand that we do not tolerate that our troops, our men are used for something so foul as to slaughtering of innocents based on their beliefs.

So Gnupa feels forced to refuse King Ernsts call to arms, citing his family never agreed to pointless wars that does not concern the safety of the realm. The response is a bit harsh..... and we are yet again at war with our own liege.....

Huh, why are you at war with the king right now? Because he declared a holy war against the Lithuanians and called you to arms, but you refused? Can't he just raise your levies? I've never seen such a war. What kind of CB is it? And what happens if you win or lose?

No he was at war with the Lithuanians, which are my old time allies, but as a vassal I can't do much. However! most of his troops comes from my levies, and as such I declared just a random faction war against him to remove his access to my levies against the Lithuanians and I'm keeping that war up until he's done fighting the Lithuanians.

Would kinda be nice with the ability to break the feudal contract in certain circumstances but it would be abused way too much.

Edit: If I remember correctly, he gets about 3-5k troops from my realm or something counting all my vassals as well.

Tanks are kinda wasted on invading the USSR

Believing in the righteous of our cause, several commoners join our banners to enforce our claim to not put Scanian troops on far away land in Poland that. The Jarl decides to split his forces, sending a large amount to seize Fyn as to control the entire sound and making it much harder for the Danes to maneuver. The second detachment of the Army is sent north to siege the capital of King Ernst.

The Royalists seeing the power of Jarl Gnupa much more dangerous than the threat of Lithuania on the polish lands decides to mount their army onto ships and send them back to fight in Halland, leaving the Polish nobles to fend for themselves against the hordes of pagans invading their land.

The army lands from the sea and confident in their superior numbers engage the heathens, instead of relying on skirmishes they charge in to close quarters too early. However this turns into a slaughter outside the walls of Varberg, the Scanian troops have higher quality, more focus on heavy and well armored troops, their more skilled commanders take their advantage to the fullest.

It doesn't take long before the entire danish army is decimated.

Gnupa goes on to secure his position in the Danish isles with no opposition left, and the Lithuanians charge in to the Polish land with ease. In the meantime, the first revolt in the Holy Roman Empire start, with several nobles rising up against the emperor's rule, asking for lowered interference from their emperor.

The education continues for Gnupa's only child, Sigrid, and she turns out to be a diligent child who wish to fulfill her father's expectations of her.

Ernst of Denmark furious in the betrayal of the Vogelius family completely ignores the Polish land and rallies his troops to siege down Rügen. Gnupa dispatches an army with more than five thousand men to engage the small force of Denmark trying to siege down his land and they are easily eradicated.

The faith of Skåne has been slowly but steadily been converting towards Norse and with the constant victories over the god on the cross the majority of the population switches over to the blief of Odin, Thor and Frey. King Ernst now desperate and with constant pressure from his Polish nobles he acquires the aid of the Knights Hospatilier who rush to take back the capital seat of Denmark. The battle is quickly over and lost by the pagans, they rally in Skåne, with the other armies and amount to almost ten thousand men strong waiting for the holy order to charge at them, which happens sooner than later. Even though double their size the battle is far from decided.

The troops manages to keep the charging knights at bay, allowing them to use skirmish tactics by ambushing them and raining arrows upon them at the fields of Skåne. They don't inflict heavy losses on the knights but the confusion and frustration teared at their morale. Eventually the Scanian troops got caught and a big battle ensued. The vikings now with upper hand in organization and morale slowly but steadily pushes back the enemy on the left flank until it collapses, then turning to give aid to the middle flank.

Victory is achieved, however not without losing a great deal of enemies themselves. The Holy orders of Christendom is indeed a dangerous tool if you are at the receiving end.

Several nobles on the border regions of Poland feel abandoned by their lord, who completely abandoned them in the war against their neighboring pagans, have risen up against their king making a bad situation even worse. However King Ernst receives a break, the Estrid's pockets run deep and they are well connected. As such they manage to persuade previously neutral parties to join in under their banner to fight against the Vogelius armies.

The new army is captured and surrounded outside Getinge in Halland, they were put together just to be shortly thereafter decimated. A few months later an opportunity to smash the Knights Hospatilier yet again presents itself. However the tear from every battle with the Knights are starting to show and even the big reserves of the Vogelius family are starting to dwindle, being left with just above four thousand men in the army after loosing about two thousand to the holy order even though the Scanian army had the numbers and the leaders.

The Chieftess of Desmond dies in the dungeons of King Ernst of Denmark, the last of Vogelius in Ireland and the end of Karl's legacy, how Karl and Grim fought for that piece of land over 40 years ago and now in an instant gone. Now her child Milzas, a Romuvan Prussian of the dynasty von Marienburg reigns in the castle of Dunasead. The Danish king eventually falls under the pressure agrees to surrender to the Lithuanian King, as such Gnupa agrees to a white peace with Ernst. His demesne needing to recover from the war, and the Swedish soldiers amassing to conduct a holy war against Skåne, Gnupa is more than happy with having achieved his first goal and does not spiral down to greed to press more demands on the Danish king.

Peace has yet come to Denmark, our Jarl's second child is born a son named Jørgen who becomes Gnupa's primary heir. Halsten of Stenkilling, the Drunkard King of Sweden conquers the Norwegian crown through a claim. It seems like the Piast rule of Sweden was quite short-lived as the Stenkillings are back on now both the Swedish and Norwegian throne. Maybe the poles shouldn't have betrayed their allies and given them Øland as was promised.

We also see the rise of a confederacy of Burgher's, german merchants, in the city of Bremen.

An exiled Norse brethren in the court of Gnupa has finally managed to amount enough wealth, troops and support to press his claim for his families lost land in the most northern parts of Sweden and we wish him all the luck we can give.

And the Pope decides yet another crusade, however this one on Andalusia to for once finish the reconquista and bring all of Iberia under catholic rule.

In order to try and secure the continued support of the vassal in Desmond, Gnupa betroths his beloved diligent daughter to the son of Desmond's chieftain. Many many years pass with not much of interest happening. However as years pass, people grow older and at the age of 43 in the year 1178, Ellinor Karlsdatter dies and Gnupa needs to find a new wife. However not really keen on marrying another cousin, he decides to marry Malmfrid, one of the members of the Frille dynasty. She proves to be quite fertile and within a year she is with child.

The Crusade of Andalusia is declared a success, most of Iberia is under Catholic rule. A new catholic Andalusian noble family has taken over the south-east part of Iberia known as Murcia, but with the crusade leaving most of the land gains to the Knights of Caltava by a decree from the pope, it conveniently limits their possible expansion.

Malmfrid later gives birth to a healthy baby boy with the name Gotfred.

Gnupa puts most of his focus on management of the realm and improvement of what he already possesses. Its certainly a strength and holds many merits. But after 5 years of peace the Vikings of Trelleborg becomes unruly, fearing they will never get the opportunity to die with glory in battle, to not be fetched by the Valkyries and to feast in Valhalla with their deities. Gnupa budges eventually and makes sure every housecarl and shieldmaiden of his realm would hear of his decree. An humongous horde is to amass at Trelleborg, and they will march on Sweden, they will take back the land that Odin once reigned as king. Upland shall be retaken, the church be burnt down and the temple of Uppsala rebuilt and the Norse faith reborn!

The old days of Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons shall e remembered by the bishoprics of Britain and northern France, the world shall know that the Vikings have returned stronger, and deadlier!

As warriors from all over Scandinavia starts traveling towards Trelleborg, the Polish-Danish King and the Lithuanian Pagan ruler clash together again and Scanian merchantmen traveling along the Baltic coast tell of battles with over thirty thousand men!

Sigrid eventually comes of age and the betrothal is honored with the Marienburg family. However Gnupa is sad to see his quick daughter leave his court.

Even though so distant from any other Catholic realm, the Kingdom of Jerusalem remains strong and they still have a Salian on their throne. The duke of Småland decides its fit to try and take Halland of the Danish King with his realm being pressed on from all sides. Another son is born to Gnupa, this one with the name of Harald.

Now with enough men gathered in Trelleborg, Gnupa of Vogelius claims the throne of Sweden, the crown of Odin and the Temple of Uppsala as his own! By the gods we shall win for the memory of every brother and sister they've hung! To glory or to Valhalla, today Odin rides with us!

And as such, 20 000 Housecarls and Shieldmaidens start their march.....

Tanks are kinda wasted on invading the USSR
There we go, I'm up to speed with my backlog, I had completely forgotten that I started an invasion when I left off. I was hoping to play around with focuses but if I'm going to fight half of Scandinavia I probably won't be able to have as much fun with it until after the war. Will be picking Theology probably if I can become Fylkir with Gnupa.

If I become Fylkir I'll do a vote on what to do with the title if there's interest. I really can't decide if I want to keep it, give it away to a vassal, make it independent or maybe even try to cheat the succession laws and somehow create the Empire of the Fylkariate title through the new custom title mechanics.

So many choices.....:allears:

Time to reforge the state that Erik the Heathen could not.

An independent Fylkirate sounds the most interesting, at least in the context of EU4. Seeing "The Fylkirate" across a map is cooler than making it simply a +Prestige modifier or national idea. It could be possible to hold it either to the end of CK2, or at least for a few reigns, though, with it being separated from the royal or imperial title once the Holy North is secure.

For EU4 I'm gonna have a look at the new papal system, it looks like it could potentially support having the same thing for the fylkariate, in that case I might just mod the game so the Fylkariate starts working like the Papacy and use a college of cardinal similar system but with the feudal lords deciding instead maybe who becomes the next fylkir?

Could be an interesting system to play around with. I have ~250-ish years left right? Plenty of time to massacre most of Europe!

If you do make it independent, it had better be of your dynasty though. It's a shame they don't call for Kingdoms outside that very, very limited list, though at least one of them would be pretty cool any ol' how. (Germany, oh my.)

Pointing the Fylkirate at the east might be fun too, though the drat Jomsviking have the very annoying tendency of never loving forming, so whether they'd be able to do anything is anyones guess.

I'm leaning towards making the Fylkariate independent and use the college of cardinals system from Sons of Abraham, however how would a Fylkir be elected? The Fylkir isn't a gydja, so it would have to be chosen among the lords who adhere to the Norse faith right? Maybe replicate the "Imperial city" mechanic of the HRE in EU3 so you have some holy lands transferred with the duchy title if you win it? What do you guys think would fit for Vikings reborn?

Personally I'm in the boring camp of "Isn't a Fylkir a religious warlord?"

I mean, the similarities between the Fylkir and the Caliph are there for a reason if you ask me. The Fylkir (and by extension his lineage) are chosen by the gods themselves to be their representatives on Earth, and lead their chosen people to Victory. May make for a less fun game, but everybody know Lore is superior to Mechanics any day. (The Author of this statement does not take responsibility for the Validity of it. Your experience may differ.)

Justify it as just giving the Fylkirate to a younger brother. One gets to be Emperor of Scandinavia, the other the Fylkir.

Groogy

Well Fylkir is a made up title which didn't exist, but my motivation for the college of cardinal system applied to it would be that elective monarchy(or well a version of it) was common in Scandinavia, and having that the electors would be the most powerful and pious lords of Scandinavia and that they would among themselves choose who would be the successor of the last Fylkir.

Though it is true, since Fylkir is made up title I would have to define also what is actually the Fylkir in this world? The Vogelius family reignites the faith of the old gods and brings it back into light. So having them as an "equivalent of Norse Jesus" wouldn't be that wrong. However also having that the Fylkir is just a title giving authority of the faith and that is elected among the most distinguished lords of the North would also be kinda interesting as it would give a "mini HRE" in Scandinavia and I would change my focus instead of having as much land as possible as having as many independent norse rulers as possible, both for CK2 and EU4.

Oh that's closer than you think, I'm holding it off with purpose, want to create a saga first!
It might be technically cheating, but some things have been modded in to accommodate the story, so should get custom events in next chapter for stuff that happens. Nothing big or fancy yet though, just a bit of flavor.

Goðar, which might be what they based the Fylkir on (I don't know what you get up to in that office!) were the secular and religious leaders of their local communites and were "elected" in a similar way to Big men in the south, in that they only held power for so long as they were successful. Free men follow the strongest after all.

Todays Allsherjargoði of the modern Reformed Norse faith is just decided amongst the laypeople as the one most people agree is the best candidate for it; the elective Monarchy system in CK2 is close enough to what it was like back then, although it also had the fact that like in Tanistry even the lowest freeman was allowed a voice.

Actually, in CK2 having the Fylkir follow a Norse tanistry thing might not be a bad idea; it would mean recognition of the Vogelius dynasty for founding it but also allow folks to voice what they will. (No idea with EU4, haven't gotten it yet. )

That's pretty cool, yeah I think I could simulate somewhat Tanistry with the college of cardinals system, just have sufficient spots in the college for all of them. Why I'll use SoA's college of cardinals is because it will let me have several independent norse rulers all working under the Fylkariate, which would be much more interesting. IF I get this working good I might propose it to Doomdark to add into the base game :D

Edit: Also giving a small spoiler...

Probably will do that after the liberation of the throne of Odin. The current Jarl, Gnupa, is the first "peaceful" ruler the Vogelius family has had, being more pressured by his peers than by his own ambitions. As such he will be much more sensible when it comes to with dealing with his enemies I imagine. I'm thinking that the Vogelius will grow respect for their enemies rather than hatred after they've managed to restore the glory of the Aesir to the northern lands, and this would be the start of it. The big questions comes if Gnupa should at the next blót sacrifice the grandmaster or if he should spare him.

Gah so many decisions, I might start adding votes to this AAR to decide on critical things like this. Going to be hard to collect votes from two forums though.

Edit: The votes would then be in the same style as how Wiz does his LP's, as in the Hozenhollern LP where the Reichstag of Swabia and later Germany decides, where the Skåne realm then would form an Allthing of the realm. Ow yeah I need to switch out that darned Catholic griphon flag of Skåne to a red-yellow raven flag instead.

Hey I'm Norse biased, I do not lie about that. I don't find much interest in the history behind the other pagan religions (bar Zunist maybe). As such not more stuff is added because we make the games we ourselves want to play which unfortunately have the side effect of making it lacking in areas we do not find interesting. Also as far as I can see, there is no mod that fleshes this out either. There are plenty of already working mechanics that could be exploited for the religions to make ahistorical but plausible churches for the pagan religions. However the other pagan religions except Zunist would be too decentralized to adhere to something as central as a Fylkir as such something new would have to be made up. But yeah, with both lack of interest from both developers and modders, there is probably an underlying reason why most stuff is only "fleshing out events".

Technically, Aztec should start as reformed when they enter the world as well :/
Ow yeah that's a great fun I'm looking forward to. The Aztec coming to colonize!

There's actually a bunch of good anthropological/ethnological work coming out of Sweden, as well as other places, but I'm not sure if the personality type attracted to that sort of studies also gets attracted to mapgames much. (Present company excluded :v: ) For the W-African parts at least it's more complex, but I'm pretty sure for the Slavic, Baltic and Romuva stuff you could find something just mythology and historical traditions aren't in my area of expertise. Gameplay wise I thought of several things like defensive pagans get to be temple holders, which would add more events maybe related to holding them (but that went meh with the tribal stuff) adding just slightly altered summer fairs, tournaments (I thought of maybe having them be for prestige instead of cash) and festivals ( again, outside my area of expertise but I recently met a dude hella into Latvian stuff I might hit up for it) and just giving them a Fylkir equivalent because even though it might be ahistorical, it's just more fun to be able to call your own great holy wars. Really, what you did with the ambition events should mostly work for all of them, where you just have slight cultural differences rather than just stopping certain cultures/religions from having them. For more gameplay stuff I always liked the idea of them being able to sponsor "adventurers", like mini-hordes but it's not really historical as such at this late stage in the game.

To bad I am terrible at patient work like modding though! Also I have no idea how the College of Cardinals works because I almost never play Christians. :v:

And if you're asking for direction on where to go, heading East rather than South is a good way to not fall into old habits. Rather than looking to the Sea and west, going towards the Steppes and other pagans, showing the superiority of the true Pagan gods over that of the other pantheons. Or something.

Also voting can be simplified if you just make it a google doc; just have people sign with their account names what they voted. Although I find the idea of just us throwing ideas at you and you deciding better than crass elective. (just listen the youngest poster instead!)

Ugh this chapter is probably going to be 60 images.... The war to reclaim the throne of Odin is not a small and quick one....
Taking its sweet time to write.

I'm going to start doing audience participation after the Fylkir Allthing has been established. The first vote will decide the fate of the Fylkariate, its stance and how Scandinavia will look. (admittedly though, seeing 'Skåne' plastered all over Sweden does give some weird satisfaction.... so will be sad to see that go)

Tanks are kinda wasted on invading the USSR

The armies assemble, they pick up their weapons and shields and start their march, first heading north and face the Smålander army trying to take Halland, they are swept aside quickly by the horde marching through their land becoming a mere side note of the war. It doesn't take long however before scouts report of the Knights Hospatiler start coming in, the holy orders of Christendom are quick to summon their young-men to fight against Gnupa and his horde. While waiting for the great first battle that signal the start of the true start of the war, a small company of Finish soldiers are sent to the Swedish heartland to pillage and loot, hurting the King's financials.

The middle flank is lead by Milzas von Marienburg of Desmond, who has grown to show himself the finest military strategist in the realm of Vogelius. He takes the choice to charge the much lighter armed enemy, crushing them quickly as such freeing up the seven thousand men in the middle flank to support the others. The battle ends in a devastating defeat for the enemy, and with a big prize for the victors...

Grandmaster Idwal of the Knights Hospatiler has been captured and now rots in the dungeons of Trelleborg!

The Swedes and their allies tries again to stop the march north, deep in the forests of Småland another battle ensues. However this time the Scanians weren't prepared and the reinforcements to the battle come one by one, as such an overwhelming victory could not be achieved.

The battle was narrow, but it was won, and a powerful Swedish nobleman perished with his men, fighting bravely until the end like any proper northerner would. To recuperate and reorganize Gnupa orders the complete siege of the Småland Duchy to gain control of the borderlands and weaken one of the current enemies of Skåne. The war for Halland is still raging. While occupying, small forces from Smålands allies comes to try and save the Duke.

King Ernst of Denmark once again allow Jews into the Kingdom again.

The war seems already won, the Swedish king already willing to accept a favorable peace. However the blood is boiling among the chieftains and the commanders. They want more, all of Sweden is not enough, they want to dye the entire peninsula red with Christian blood. Soon enough Sweden's ally, the King of Scotland, had arrived to save them. Gnupa is taken by surprise, having not realized Sweden had such a powerful ally his troops are scattered in Småland as the Scots attack them.

Gnupa tries his best to consolidate his forces but it is not enough. Odin, or whatever war god the Romuvan has, seemed to smile upon chieftan Milzas saves the battle and manages to give victory at a great cost to both sides.

With renewed ranks of Holy orders and Swedish levies, Milzas order a fallback to the island of Öland and to dig in preparing for the knights to storm the beaches. Some might have said Milzas was a coward, but this move saved the army and gave victory, even as four thousand more men came to help the Holy orders from both Scotland and Småland, the well prepared defenders could secure victory against overwhelming odds. Milzas decision making was not grabbed by fury, pride or religious cause, he relied on his calm mind to come up with a solution against overwhelming odds. Gnupa entrusted the army to him and with his command, he made fearless and brutal Vikings into a disciplined force that could fight three times their own amount. Even though as a heathen and foreigner and considered somewhat of his father as a lowborn usurper, he had Gnupa's respect for his skills and accomplishments.

However even granted with Milzas skills, many dies including the Guardian of Gnupa's son. As the year of 1185 sees its first day, the Valkyries collect Pridbjørn for his departure to Valhalla. The first nobility casualty of Skåne in a long time.

With barely a victory secured, Milzas orders a forced push against the fleeing holy orders over the waters to not let them rest and reorganize themselves. No matter how much troops are killed, there seems to always be more Catholic warriors to replace the ones lost. So in order to make sure that the Swedes are properly crippled the army are set to siege Uppsala. The war then takes it second noble casualty, this time of Gnupa's own kin. Chief Yngvar of Vogelius, unce to Gnupa, dies from a crippling wound caused by the heavy fighting in southern Sweden.

More holy warriors assemble themselves to try and assure the Swedish capital remains free from heathen hands control. But as before, Milzas makes due with the few forces he has, even though reinforced with Bulgarian mercenaries it is just barely enough. The Swedes are pushed back and flee north to a standing holy order army waiting to reinforce them, Milzas does not intend to give them a moment of rest and is iin pursuit after the fleeing soldiers.

Alas, in the ensuing battle the mighty General, Milzas of the Prussians fell to the swords of the Knights of Santiago. By some counts he was an old man, fifty-winters he had seen; his hair greyed, his face lined with the years. His pride ensured he would die fighting, relentlessly, refusing to allow some child who had barely sprouted his first beard to claim his life. A Knight charged, glanced off his shield as the General buried his hatchet into the skull of the boy playing at war, but alaso he was pierced from behind by the shining steel of another Crusader. His blood coursing from his wound, he swung his axe with a mighty roar and cleaved the Knight's head from his shoulders. The other combatants stood weary, cautious of this beast of a man, they hesitated but pressed their advantage. Milvas fought on, claiming more of these "Holy Knights", though he took many more wounds and his strength waned. With one last roar, he charged headlong into a group of the Knights who surrounded one of his own, toppling the group and allowing his man to escape. Alas he did not then rise from his feet, and the surrounding Knights each bore down upon him with their shining blades like the sharpened teeth of a great dragon.

With Milzas death, he builds a legacy that is remembered throughout the northern lands, the "Patient Wolf". In the years to come, he will be remembered as the foreigner who fought for his lord with all his might and his name is honored in the temples and a verse as in the old Sagas are written to keep his memory.

With the great commander dead, every soldier counts for the Scanian army. Now being forced to be much more careful the army starts moving south to try and get the upper-hand defensively. However the old tactic that Milzas used is not as effective as when he lead the army. It gave him his nickname, by being cautius and patient he would get the enemy to attack you when you were as the strongest, defeat them swiftly and then spring into a rage filled chase, striking down them before they could reform their ranks, never letting the broken soldiers rest, like how a pack of wolfs would hunt their prey. This time it worked but it cost much more men that the Scanians could afford.

Some good news at least comes as Uppsala falls, the clergy slaughtered and the church burnt. The supply of vikings to fight for the cause is starting to dry up, luckily the Swedes are running out of levies, mercenaries and holy orders to use themselves-

The Scottish King tries another surge, charging the last remnants of his army into the Vikings ranks, however the defense is tougher than he thought and he end up himself captured by the Scanians, sent to rot in the dungeons of Trelleborg with the Grandmaster of Knights Hospatiler.

The army marches back to Trelleborg to refill its ranks with new fresh soldiers.

With the Prussian Wolf dead, Gnupa now has to take over the front-lines, renewing the soldiers faith in the war. However Gnupa may be patient, but he isn't nearly as good as Milzas was and he starts showing a tendency to have his blood boil to quickly and have a rage take over his mind.

As Gnupa is on the battlefield, his son Jørgen comes of age and take over the court duties of the Jarl in his absence. He is a good diplomat, excelling in knowing how to make people do what he want and controlling the vassals of Skåne.

The Swedes try and rear end assemble what little they have to try and take back the capital, but they are quickly crushed.

Even in times of war, matters of state needs to be managed and a betrothal is ensured with the quick daughter of the Blekinge chieftain. In the midst of burning the Scandinavian peninsula to the ground, King Ernst once again decided to expel all the Jews from the Danish Kingdom. Also since the Holy Orders of Christendom are utterly defeated and humiliated, even the Grandmaster of a Holy Order is a captive of one of the heathens. The Pope sets aside funds to stat up the Teutonic Order to help fight off the growing heathens on all sides of the Catholic world.

The Swedes does not have much to put up against the Scanians at this point, and the bigger threat has become domestic. Rumors go around that the King of Denmark is plotting to force Rügen off the hands from Jarl Gnupa. Because of that Gnupa's hand is forced and he can't take everything the Swedish King holds but have to settle with the Swedish core lands and the land of Jemtland.

It too Gnupa nine years, but now the goal has been accomplished. The throne of Uppsala, the land where Odin reigned Sweden from, has been free'd and is back in hands where it belongs. Humungous amount of Catholic territory now belongs to the Vogelius family, and it will take years before the chaos of the war finally ends in these lands.

And as the war ends, Gnupa has an old enemy to see in the dungeons....

The man, untouched by the time in the dungeons, this Idwal was a strong and proud man indeed. The Holy warrior tried to motivate his victory, that with his capture and death that it would help promote the power of the Pope. But all it did was spur the Jarl with an idea....

And only time will tell how we will look back on this moment, will it bring an end to the faith of Aesir? Or shall Europe burn in the centuries to come?

His wife tells him she is with child, but doubt besets Gnupa as he has just been on the field fighting the cross-worshipers for nine years, could the child really be his own? Rumors of that the count of Desmond, heir of the Wolf and son-in-law with Gnupa has been visiting Malmfrid during the nightly hours.

Christian af Bornholm, the old regent that took care of Gnupa when his father died is still fondly remembered by Gnupa. As such he gives the county of Gestrikland to his child. The county is located just north of Uppland.

The daughter is born, she is given the name Ingrid but Gnupa still has his doubt if it actually is his child. The time pass, eventually Gnupa decides to hold a Blót to celebrate the great victory and to give offerings to the gods.

With so many new vassals, mostly of them catholic counts, a lot refuse to participate in the Blót but some pay to be exempted.

The nobles around the realm arrive to the Blót and the human sacrifice comes. The first sacrifice is in honor of Odin for the great victory and the chosen sacrifice is the Grandmaster of the Hospatiler. Even as the noose is tightened around his neck he remains calm and mumbles passages from the holy bible. Gnupa looks into his eyes all the way until the soul leaves them of this great man. Gnupa did not hate the Grandmaster, he respected his foe and he organizes that his remains are to be sent to the Order to let them bury him their way.

With the hangings done, it goes over to the feast inside the great hall of Trelleborg. The party is all and well until Chieftess Bodil of Bornholm seem to have a bit too much fun and pukes all over the chieftain of Desmond. The second son of Gnupa takes his fair part of the feast, having just grown of age.

Years pass, in fact five to be exact. Gnupa is preparing, filling up his ranks, his treasury and planning with his council on when to start the first step of their plan. The opportunity shows itself when King Ernst dies of old age and the Kingdom weak from the succession, as well the Queen of Hungary who is now married to the new King of Denmark is fighting a huge revolt in her lands, Gnupa jumps into action. He declares his Independence, that the Jarldom of Skåne is too big and powerful to live under a decadent King of a false religion.

King Stefan of course, can not accept this as Skåne has grown to be half of the Kingdom and does his best to try and stop him, he calls all his allies but the Queen of Hungary refuses. She uses the open revolts in her lands as an excuse. But in reality she hates her husbands guts.

The Holy Orders of the Pope have learned their lesson and are quick to rally and organize themselves in the Danish lands to help the Danish king enforce his will. Several battles are fought across the southern part of the Scandinavian peninsula. The Holy orders and the Danes join up with the Swedish-Norwegian forces coming to help.

They engage the besieging forces of Halland, trying to take the capital of the Danish King again.

Eventually the mix of Danes, Norwegians, Swedes and Holy orders are defeated thanks to the commander of the middle flank managing to find a narrow point to hold the enemies at bay until reinforcements from the right flank can arrive.

The fighting goes on, mostly smaller skirmishes, the Swedes retreat back to their mountains and try to take Naumdal from Skåne. However since they are now split off from the main forces Gnupa takes the oppertunity and wipes out the entire Swedish army.

The Swedes realize what's about to happen and tries to flee but is caught in Ångermanland. With their armies depleted and all their allies armies depleted the Danish king is forced to recognize the independence of Skåne!

As such, the first step of their long plan finished, Jarl Gnupa goes on with the second and final step and declares himself Fylkir of the Norse faith, holder of the Allfather's crown in Midgard and Protector of his realm. He claimed that the duty of the Fylkir was a divine one. He creates the Fylkir Allthing to be held in Uppsala to decide on both religious and secular matters.

There might be an error or two, will fix ad-hoc on the chapter, was out celebrating new year and ended up getting a bit too much and face planted the asphalt. Nearly broke my wrist so been struggling just to get the chapter up.

Anyway next thing on agenda is to have the Fylkir Allthing vote on something (meaning you guys), when I have gotten up this chapter on the Paradox forums as well. So got some time to come up with some subjects. One is the matter of dýrlingur(saints) and if it should be allowed within our reformed faith and if yes, should Milzas, even though he is a foreigner and heathen, should he be given this status? His children in Desmond have turned to the true faith actually.

There is also the matter of that we have so many cross worshipers within the realm now.... that we also have to decide on how to handle.

The Gods of Milzas, the clan of the Romuva are surely friends of the Aesir, for did they not send him to us to aid in our battles against the tyrannic and envious god of the cross-men? Even though they are not the gods of our people they saw fit to send us a mighty warrior to aid us in our struggle. We would disgrace the All-Father if we did not honor their favor.
