Due to the unfortunate lack of a reliable infrastructure, all issues related to the search/archives outage debacle have taken several more steps than they should. When the hosting company says "the remaining issues require a DBA," and I ask "okay, who's our go-to DBA?" Well, we don't have one so I made a lot of calls to trusted tech sources to get recommendations, then interviewed candidates, and now we have a DBA in place. For future issues, they'll be monitoring the situation, so it will be a case of them saying "here's the issue," me saying "fix it ASAP," and it should cut down substantially on the periods of degraded performance.

The same goes for the hardware issue; now I'm set up for alerts and in constant contact with our hosting company. Prior to the search/archives outage, I was not an authorized account, and even after eventually gaining access, I had to make hundreds of calls asking questions/yelling at people in order to get poo poo done because the necessary information wasn't centralized. Ideally we're not going to be seeing this type of search/archives situation anytime soon due to our upgraded equipment, but if we do the support system needed to address such problems immediately should now be in place.
