Awwww yeah it's that time again! So psyched, even though I have like zero time to play games ever lately. It's the spirit of the thing, you know?

And speaking of the spirit, VISIT US IN THE IRC! For the MOST part we're a chill group, and we work hard to keep drama out (we suck at it, but we work at it regardless). No begging, no drama importing, and you'll have an awesome place to talk about how you can't afford to eat for the next month.

Also, non-US goons, check out that list of overseas buyers. DarkestLite and I are on at strange hours, so you can usually find one of us even if you're an AusGoon or KiwiGoon or whatever. We're happy to help.

I just edited my post on Page 2, with links to the games:

Transistor's combat is significantly worse than Bastion's. Undodgeable attacks force you into turn based mode where you just spam your most overpowered combo a few times and win. Bastion is the better game.

No attacks are undodgeable in Transistor, and there isn't an overpowered combo that eclipses everything else. It's a weird (and poorly explained) combat system, but it is really rewarding if you invest the time to understand it.

I can see why people prefer Bastion's gameplay over Transistor. Transistor is really cool and satisfying, it does have some problems (real time is too dangerous except to jaunt around and charm enemies to buy time to go into turn() again) but it's such a unique and cool system that it's hard to hate.

I really enjoyed the more tactical combat in Transistor. But it still boiled down to use Turn(), hit enemy, Jaunt() around hoping you don't get smacked around too much, repeat.
I just enjoyed the more reflex based combat in Bastion more. And I miss the Who Knows Where exposition sections.
I must admit that I like how Transistor encourages you to try different builds, though.

Unless you bind Jaunt to an ability to allow you to use it while recovering. Or use a particular combo that allows you to recover health faster than most enemies can damage it. Or use your invisibility or a buddy to fight for you. Etc. There's no one way that combat in Transistor can take place.

I used Jaunt() like you at first, but later I discovered that it was much more effective to just use Cloak() at the end of turn to get behind cover, and use Charm + Jaunt to heal / protect myself with a shield / disable the most dangerous enemy. I'm sure thare are other viable strategies too, you just have to discover them.

I can totally see someone prefering Bastion because of its more fast-paced combat system, but that doesn't mean that Transistor's is worse.

Transistor feels more like a puzzle with its gameplay/combat. Definitely lacks that hack/slash feel Bastion had.

I am inordinately excited about this. My birthday has coincided well; it was on May 27th, and I still have some money saved from some cash gifts, so I was able to charge up the ol' wallet a bit. I always do better with these sales when I set an amount I can afford in my wallet and just tell myself that when the wallet goes empty, that's that. But inevitable it somehow never quite works out that way. Bad impulse control ITT

A couple of things:

Palpek posted:

:gaben: Recommendations A-M Last time there was a big indie sale going on I made a write-up on good cheap games.

English Country Tune - A-ball-in-a-3d-cube-world kind of puzzle game and one of the best in the genre. Seems pretty harmless but it will suck you in for hours.
English Country Tune hasn't participated in any Steam sale in the last year. Its last sale was July 2013, for whatever reason.

quote:

Guacamelee - A Metroidvania style action-platformer set in a luchadore wrestling world. The graphics are awesome and it's really funny and overall a cool game. It's more of a casual experience though so great for people scared of more challenging games in the genre.
Guacamelee is definitely not casual as it is highly technical and demanding and is rather polarizing for that reason -- you can't beat the game without being really good at pulling off combos both in fighting and in platforming, so a lot of people get frustrated near the end. It does not have masochistic design like Super Meat Boy, but it requires having quick reflexes to pull off a bunch of moves in a row to get through a room.

A couple of games that haven't been mentioned that should be pretty cheap:

- Edna & Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes: Haven't played the first game (but will), but it's a point n click adventure where you're a kid who inadvertently (or perhaps intentionally??) kills a ton of your classmates and other people over the course of the game and has to break free of various aspects of mind control programming (which ties into the puzzles).
- Gemini Rue: We have a lot of dystopian future point and click adventures but what's one more gonna hurt you, plus it's Wadjet Eye so it's extra good.
- Hell Yeah: Basically modern Jazz Jackrabbit
- Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet: People called this a Metroidvania at the time, I dunno that I would say that, but it is a nice stylistic twin-stick shooter in a big game world. ( this game was published by microsoft and is GFWL so it may be non-functional soon )
- LA Noire: If it's $5 or less and you like games like Phoenix Wright/Walking Dead, you can't go wrong. You also have to deal with game mechanics that seem to work against you (the truth/doubt/lie concept needs work), but it's a fun noir story, it's a pretty long game, interesting characters (except for the protag), and fun acting performances.
- Misadventures of PB Winterbottom: Pretty tricky game in the same vein as Braid (and from the same time period too). Usually goes on sale for 2 bucks or less.
- Psychonauts: Still the best 3D platformer on Steam which is probably a sad thing but everything except for the goofy finale is so great and distinct and unique. Get more 3D platformers on Steam!!
- Puzzle Agent: Grickle + Professor Layton + Minnesota. (sequel)
- Sam & Max: The Devil's Treehouse: The best Sam & Max series since Hit the Road. Finally nails the voices of the characters, every episode has a neat hook, and the typical episodic recycled conventions are dropped. If you want to play the other games, just get season 2, and play the free Abe Lincoln Must Die episode from season 1 if you must.
- Stacking: Doublefine's best game since Psychonauts, solve puzzles by essentially possessing other people and using their abilities.
- Stick It to the Man: A hybrid platformer/adventure game (Cosmic Spacehead?) where you read people's thoughts and slap inventory items in em!!
- Thomas Was Alone: it's cool but you probably already got it in a Humble Bundle!!
