A lot of old school designers and programmers (we're talking RE4, Clover, and later arcade era people) apparently still work there, just on Monster Hunter though. Which of course isn't everyones cup of tea.

No, but everyone has a weird view on Capcom right now, because they haven't released a proper non-3DS/mobile inhouse game, that wasn't just an "update", since 2012 pretty much.
They outsourced their stuff to restructure and expand their japan studios(they bought 2 new buildings and plan to employ like 100 new devs every year). Funnily enough one of the goals is to be able to do more themselves and outsource less, because they know drat well, that the quality of outsourced games is lacking.

Anyway, while everybody is yelling "Capcom is going down!" and "muh Megaman!", I say let's wait until next year. They canceled ALL their games when they began to restructure the company. Let's see what Capcom is working on right now.
I hope the investors can wait that long too.

Pretty sure that can't actually happen since Nintendo got those rights before any theoretical ownership change.

The title really should be "it is now possible for a takeover of Capcom to happen."

It doesn't look like they're actively trying to sell the company off, and it's still worth enough that all this speculation about various entities acquiring Capcom or their IPs (which aren't being auctioned off currently) is kind of asinine.

Seriously, a 50% stake in Capcom is over half a billion dollars currently. Nobody's dropping that kind of money on a lukewarm Japanese video game company.

Nintendo or Sony for anything Capcom, honestly. It'd give Nintendo some IPs to work their magic with, and if Sony snagged up some Capcom IPs, I'd trust them to handle them at the very least better than Capcom itself has.

It'd be a blow to the industry if MS bought 'em up.

It'd be like Rare all over again. I mean sure when they were leaving Nintendo they were already on the Decline, but now they're just off in their own corner making Kinect games and nothing more. It's sad really when you think about it.

So at ~67m outstanding shares priced at ¥1,746
Buying a majority stake in the company would cost about ¥59.66 billion
Which at current exchange rate is ~$584 million.

That seems obtainable..

I can see any of the big three more than willing to throw that down. That's basically a ticket to guaranteed victory.

Mr.Unique-Name

You aren't likely to be able to bulk purchase 35 million shares, and starting a run on them will drive the price up.

Even if an entity could get all those shares at current market value, half a billion is a rather large investment that honestly doesn't have great prospects when you look at the recent history of the stock value.

I obviously have no access to numbers or anything and am a complete idiot but I wouldn't be surprised if Sony bought it to take Monster Hunter away from Nintendo consoles. As far as I understand it's a pretty big deal in Japan and something to push the Vita over the 3DS with could theoretically be useful.

Probably wouldn't be worth $500 million though.

The Vita isn't worth to Sony the money it would cost to make Monster Hunter an exclusive. The system is on lifesupport in Japan, and dead everywhere else, with the few games it's getting basically flowers at a tombstone.

Man this is always a surreal chart to look through. I assume it's even more sobering when someone looks at it for the first time and doesn't find any trace of Mega Man until they get to number thirty-five.

Like it says those are only the sales of the NES/Famicom versions of Mega Man 2 and swaths of gamers have played it since then via various other re-releases but still just seeing DmC almost eek out ahead of it is something else.

P3rd was on the PSP and I think there's an HD version coming for the Vita. I think...

Well, not that any other videogame company would buy Capcom, but why do people want Sega to buy them? Sega is Miku & japanese arcade games now. And a lovely Sonic game for the west every couple years. They have a bunch of IPs I would love to see, so I don't think they need more IPs they would do nothing with, while pumping out more japan exclusive stuff.

P3rd HD was for the PS3 and was essentially just HD resources for playing a PSP game on the PS3 as opposed to an actual PS3 game.

There won't be some kind of return to Playstation for the MH franchise unless the Vita has an install base much closer to the 3DS.

Most of the guys who were superstars in the PS2 era left the company, but they still have a lot of the behind-the-scenes workhorses. When Revelations was coming out, I remember reading an article that said that besides Hideaki Kamiya, something like 90% of the crew that made Resident Evil 2 was still at Capcom Japan.
