Young people aren't wanting to have children because they don't have the financial security of their parents. In previous generations, by the mid 20s you'd likely have a steady job that'd keep you employed for life, a car, a reasonable chance of getting a home loan for a house that doesn't take more than 3 lifetimes for you to pay off, and a college loan that isn't a full decade's wages.

So, in conclusion, blah blah globalisation blah class warfare blah blah rich people blah socialism blah.

I guess it's one of those compensation factor feedback loops. Overpopulation shits things up for people, so their lives suck and they can't afford to have kids, so the situation fixes itself up when all the old bastards finally eat themselves to death, except in regions where children are basically your entire old age safety net so people have even more of them if they're poor.

Which means you have to, really: kill you're famil

Or maybe when you spend too much time reading about bad things that happen to other people you begin to use those anecdotal examples to justify your own failings. :)

no, at least the first part is true!

i never really wanted kids but now looking at the amount of years i presumably have left to live i'm wondering if people don't just eventually have kids out of boredom- i mean not that they don't love them but there are limited options to fill that space of time

I'm in my 30s & half of my friends that had kids in their 20s are going through weird mid-life crises now where they are fixated on being the "cool parents" and they treat their kids like blog fodder, dressing them in pop culture costumes & throwing them elaborate geek themed parties & photo essays. They also relate everything to their children to the point where they seem to lack a unique personality so the only thing they can talk about is their children. Some of the dads are now desperately trying to cheat on their wives & it's super gross being hit on by a guy who won't stop talking about his kids.

The other half are so soul crushingly poor that I rarely see them because they are so busy trying not to die from poverty.

Who is having children out of boredom? Are you sure you aren't confusing children with drugs?

probably... people in their thirties who have been with someone for awhile and the 'going to work, hobbies, going on vacation, buying stuff' has gotten a bit old? socialization is also limited when the other people your age are doing the family thing. idk man, i don't have kids but i've seen it happen.

Really, you don't think maybe people in long term committed relationships might choose to have children because they want to share their love & knowledge with a new generation of humans thereby fulfilling a biological imperative? I mean, drat, I'm pretty cynical about kids but even I can empathize with the desire to have kids. A lot of women hit a point where our ovaries take over our brains & the desire to raise children is very powerful & has nothing to do with being bored & everything to do with reproductive instincts & sharing the wonder of life with new people.

i'm not saying that's not the case? i'm just saying sometimes people who didn't want to ever have kids come around to it after the stuff they thought they would be doing with their life instead doesn't turn out to be so fulfilling.
