You also permanently lose essence if you get essence drained by an infected, such as a vampire. :drac:
It's a situation you probably want to avoid.

Not all infected have Essence Drain, but what's worse is some spirits can have it as well as random paracritters. You can get essence back that's been lost in such a manner through a really, really expensive months-long therapy that's listed in Augmentation (as well as if you'd had augs and removed them, you could recover your essence hole) but that's... really expensive, takes months, and may not actually be available to you.

Now it's not that huge of a risk fighting essence drainers; They have to use Charisma + Magic against a threshold of (10 - your essence), so statistically unless they have 9-12 total Charisma+Magic (at which point it goes from a possibility to a guarantee due to how dice trading works in SR4) you can resist for a little bit, so your buddies can get the vampire off you. Nor can they just up and pop essence out of you from a minor touch; they can only drain against sentient and restrained or consenting targets.

It's easy to forget about, given how ridiculously hard to obtain it is. If anyone has actually had it come up in the course of a campaign without it being shoehorned in, I'd be incredibly surprised.

They could, but a corp controlled mage is, almost, infinitely worth more to them than another wared up person.

There's a lot of cheap, low-value chrome you can jam into a person if you want to negate them being a threat to you again while sending a message. Muscle Replacements comes to mind; Sure, you get some physical strength to it, but the installation is rather torturous as they have to basically vivisect you, and it's like 1 full essence per point of rating. Most Mages are supposed to be relatively low strength, to boot; combine 3 or 4 magic with the fact that it's not just your magic maximum that gets reduced and you could torture the crap out of a guy for 7500 Nuyen and a 14R availability test (Second-Hand Muscle Replacement Rating 3) and effectively neutralize them being able to use their strengths against you. Even better, you don't have to leave it in them, so you can get your money back after it's done.

Well, by 2070 or so, they're not really growing limbs and organs for Ghouls to eat but they are making basically 'Metahuman Steaks' that they can buy in some areas for food. Ghouls still aren't universally accepted as people, although folks are more willing to accept it at that point what with some civilized Ghoul nations actually existing, but it's certainly not guaranteed that to be a Ghoul is to be 100% illegal.

Aren't initiations very hard to get, as well as very expensive to do? I mean, I'm not too familiar with the actual tabletop rules, but.

It depends. In SR4, Initiation is (3 * newRating) + 10, so 13, 16, 19, etc. You can reduce that with group initiations and ordeals, although certain ordeals can't be repeated/shouldn't be repeated because they gently caress you up majorly. But it is kind of expensive, the average run reward for Karma is supposed to be anywhere from like 3-5 Karma, and runs can take multiple sessions to complete. When I GM I try and give at least a little Karma out at the end of each session, even if it's just for attendance, to keep them from getting pissy.
