Yet another violation of regulation 1910 subpart D.

Now on steam! :suicide:
Did you play Wakfu before and quit the game after the tutorial because everything was locked away behind a paywall? It's going free-to-play, so now's a great time to get back in!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nVrcDfMiUU

Wakfu is a beautifully-animated MMO made by the french development company Ankama. It features turn-based tactical combat similar to that seen in Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, Tactics Ogre and other games of the like. If you've played Dofus--another game by Ankama--you'll find a lot in common with Wakfu. Unlike Dofus, however, Wakfu is super griefable.

How griefable? Well:
- When a new monster is introduced into the game, you can hunt it to extinction, causing anything made from it to be incredibly rare or entirely nonexistent!
- You can leverage the votes of goons to force your way into the governor's chair, and then take a steaming load on roleplayers and people that care about tiny numbers.
- Once you're in a position of power, you can declare war on other countries and kick over roleplaying scrubs' sandcastles.
- You aren't prevented from killing people around your level over and over (except being unable to vote).
- The developers don't really care about people griefing. In fact, some of them even encourage it!

How's the combat?
It's pretty much the same as any other tactical RPG, just with allies. Each player/enemy takes their turn (they are rewarded for doing their turn faster, so its not THAT much of a wait between turns), and there're mostly no cooldowns on skills. Each class has a set of support skills (typically 50/50 actives and passives), as well as three elemental branches (there are 4 elements: Fire, Air, Water and Earth). Each spell has a Spell Level; the elemental skills just need to be used to increase theirs, while you need to put skill points into support skills to level them.

How's the grind/leveling experience?
As unpleasant as it sounds in 2014, Wakfu remains an old school grinder. You're going to be killing mobs by the fistful to gain levels and soloing is extremely difficult on some classes. You do get a lot more experience in a party and fighting groups of mobs, so don't be afraid to ask others for help!

Is this game sandboxy?
Sort of, it definitely has some elements. Most worthwhile gear is obtained through crafting, which requires resources that must be harvested from crops, herbs, plants, minerals and monsters in the wild. You can create more resources by replanting them or you can just grab 'em all and screw the environment!

Note, however, that while most resources will reproduce on their own, this is a very slow process and a species can be driven to total extinction if the population isn't given time to recover or assisted by players replanting. Not everyone wants to do the dirty work of replanting so scuffles over resources occur frequently. I've heard stories of goons being declared blood enemies for daring to harvest a field of ferns.

Character classes

:siren::frogsiren::siren:THIS STUFF IS EXTREMELY OUT-OF-DATE:siren::frogsiren::siren:

Wakfu has a whopping 15 character classes, each with branching spell trees. Classes tend to play wildly differently based on build allowing for further specialty. You are not limited to a single spell tree but it’s usually easier to gear to your strengths if you focus on a certain branch and use other trees’ spells for utility or effect.

Please note that the opinions expressed on trees and builds below represent our own experiences and may not represent reality or your own experience.

Iop
Highly recommended for a first character
Iops are renowned for being courageous knights who let their weapons do the talking. Ogrest's Chaos hasn't changed their attitude, either. Loyal to their god, Iops are spirited warriors and formidable protectors.

As a Iop, you are literally Goku :ssj: Your attacks build stacks of Power which cause you to do more and more and more damage as the fight goes on, visually catching on fire and crackling with electricity until you eventually reach Super Vegeta 4 Ultimate Saiyan Gotenks Frieza.

Once upon a time, Iop was The Class, with every other class sans Cra completely useless. Nowadays they're toned down a bit, but they remain one of the best single target melee classes available with great tanking and damaging abilities.

Fire: Strong AOE damage in various shapes and sizes. Most attacks have a chance to proc extra damage. Utility consists of a single spell’s chance to shorten a target’s ranged spells.
Earth: Somewhat AOE, somewhat ranged earth damage. Certain attacks can stun or remove MP. The ranged spells have minimum ranges and can be difficult to use once you’re in melee.
Air: Entirely single-target melee-range damage. Low action point cost per attack, good for using up leftover AP/MP after a big attack. Very little utility, can only push a single unit away.

Sacrier
There's no use trying to beat a Sacrier disciple into submission - they like it too much!
In fact, these berserkers only become more powerful with each blow from their enemy! You'll find these strange creatures right where the fighting rages and the blood flows... and this is the warrior comrade that just keeps giving and giving in those long, tiring battles.

Sacriers are self-destructive berserkers who sacrifice HP for big damage. They work fairly well as tanks but the true comedy of Sacrier comes from their movement spells, which allows you to swap players and monsters all over the place. If you utilize the motion sickness debuff you can make your enemies :barf: themselves to death by doing this (this is actually animated if done to a player!)

As their HP goes down, a Sacrier's strength increases. Sacriers also have a great cover ability to protect weaker, mushier members.

Fire: Great damage, also hurts yourself.
Air: Mobility with extra damage when you move people around.
Earth: OK damage and every skill applies armor on yourself.

Cra
Highly recommended for a first character
Goddess Cra's motto is "Pride and precision". Her disciples specialize in long-range combat, and are archers of the highest order. They make precious allies in battle and are most effective when they keep their distance. The introduction of Beacons has widened the scope of their strategic powers even more.

One of the strongest ranged class available, Cras excel in hitting enemies across the map, and are also capable of dropping beacons that do various effects, allowing you to set up some insane traps. These are also incredibly useful for boxing in bosses in PvE and denying area around opponents in PvP.

Air: Underwhelming damage but least finicky with range and can push people around.
Fire: Weird mobility and range issues but great AoE.
Earth: Leftover skills, but you also have the best single-target damage.

Sadida
NOT recommended for a first character
Many people accuse Sadidas of being tree-huggers, but the truth is worse still! These lazy creatures can't even be bothered to get vertical and stretch their arms around one. They prefer to watch. “Watch what,” you ask. “Watch the tree,” they answer.

Sadida is a summoner/support class with a wide variety of utility spells that can be used to buff their dolls or summon a special Voodoll that can be used to damage/heal targets from afar. Their specialties focus on doll summons and the buffing/exploding thereof, with a little bit of defense and few skills to help mitigate the RNG nature of summon AI. Sadidas can currently summon over half a dozen different doll types, each one with a unique specialty such as locking enemies, healing allies, memorizing spells cast by the Sadida and mimicking them, or even suiciding into enemies. :krad:

Water: Many spells in this tree double as heals on dolls or allies. Used to summon damage and healing dolls.
Air: Spells used to poison the target with dots, lower resistance, or punish them for using AP/MP. Gust and K’mir also allow the Sadida to push/pull targets around and help control the battlefield. Used to summon caster and AP reducing dolls.
Earth: Earth spells steal MP from enemies and apply delayed armor to allies. This tree has a random aoe that always has been, and always will be, hilarious. Used to summon locking and MP reduction dolls.

Note - Most players at the moment go for a doll-less build. Welcome to Wakfu!

Eniripsa
NOT recommended for a first character, very difficult to solo with and dependent on a party to level
We're the lovely love you love to love. Wrap our sinuous bodies in silks and satins, that we may weather the blows of your enemies. Sip the dew of our sweet kisses, health in ecstasy forevermore. Bend your body, bend your mind. We're impenetrable. Penetrate us! Creamy, dreamy, divine~

Eniripsas have been all over the place. Once upon a time the mightiest tanks in existence, they've been nerfed and buffed across various roles for years and now firmy reside in the role of "squishy healer".

Water: Powerful single target and multitarget heals. These spells can be turned into damage using the support skill Unnatural Remedies.
Air: Throws flasks that cause light damage with low chances of causing interesting status effects, some of which are negligable and others deadly.
Fire: Apply marks to enemies, which cause damage various effects (WP drain, temporary allied resurrection) and rack up damage boosts upon the target’s death. These spells can be turned into heals using the support skill Unnatural Remedies.

Sram
NOT recommended for a first character, poor damage until very late in the game and little other contribution to the party until then
So what are those Srams hiding behind their mysterious masks? No one really knows what they have been up to since Ogrest's Chaos. One thing's for sure though, they're even sneakier than before!

As the token assassin class, Sram can attain extreme damage potential and are great in PvP but requires tons of grinding and gear to realize it. Some of their skills are bugged at the moment but they’re still quite powerful.

Fire: One of the best single-target damage classes in the game beyond lv120.
Water: Steal stats when you backstab people! Not permanent.
Air: Special effects when you backstab while invisible! Invisibility is broken at the moment.

Osamoda
Highly recommended for a first character (Summoner and Dragon builds)
They don't bat an eyelid at a thundering herd of Minotorors. The terrifying shriek of a Kwak has no effect on them. The howling of a hundred hungry Boowolves is music to their ears... who are they? Osamodas, that's who!

Osamodas are the true summoning class of Wakfu, using their gobgob to capture and control legions of monsters. The class can also be played as a more traditional damage dealer by fusing with the gobgob to turn into a terrifying duck-dragon monstrosity, or as a healer by pursuing the earth tree.

Summoner and dragon Osas are extremely popular as they both bloom fairly early, so unless you want to play support this is not a class for special snowflakes. Note that summon Osa is quite pricey to gear end-game.

Air: Decent single target damage, vastly improved in Dragon form. Whip is a great buff for monsters.
Fire: Mediocre AoEs that apply great buffs to summoned monsters. Mooing has very high base damage. Boohowl is a powerful damage buff and can stack.
Earth: Applies buffs to your Gobgob, which is necessary if you’re trying to play as support. Support osas are quite rare.

Rogue
Recommended for a first character
Champions as much as they are felons, the Rogues associate intelligence with cunning. Masters in the art of DIY, they use and abuse tools and gadgets to carry out their schemes. At the heart of all this malice, only one thing has any worth in their eyes: family values.

Rogues play bomberman with the field, littering it with timed explosives with large areas that deal tremendous damage. They are excellent at denying area with their bombs while shooting enemies that get close, and their Boombot allows them to manipulate and shorten the timer on bombs. A bomb exploding will cause other bombs in its range to also explode, allowing for orgasmic combos with the right setup.

This class is amazingly fun to play but can be tricky to learn properly. A high level and properly geared rogue can turn the map into a fiery inferno and punctuate every turn with explosions.

Earth: Ranged damage.
Air: Melee damage. Almost exactly like Air Iop but even spammier with hits.
Fire: Bombs. Multiple unexploded bombs create fire fields which cause damage every turn and every tile of movement.

Enutrof
If you want to make an Enutrof happy, just compare him to the 'Kama Reaper', a character from Enutrof fairy tales who comes to take the richest, greediest ones off to hell... which they love! I have yet to meet someone who wants to make an Enutrof happy though...

Enutrofs are a treasure hunting class who can use their abilities to wring extra loot from an encounter, or just blow stuff up! Their specialties focus on mobility, increased chance of loot, and the use/manipulation of Ore Mines that provide unique buffs to the Enutrof. Enutrofs tend to be in high demand in parties due to their item dropping capabilities.

Water: Spells in this tree allow the Enutrof to force a monster to drop an extra item. This puts a debuff on the monster that can then be exploited for bonus damage. The premier treasure-hunting tree.
Fire: Based on utilizing ore mines for bonus damage and adding aoe effect to your spells. Requires points in the Geology specialty to get the most out of it.
Earth: Damage spells that can steal mp from your enemies or give it to your allies. Also the only tree usable when you fuse with your pet drheller to become an enraged DBZ creature that can do laps around the entire map.

Feca
Fecas have always been Protectors. This is one class that hasn't changed in the time it took to go from DOFUS to WAKFU - don't expect them to give up whatever treasure they're guarding too easily! And whatever you do, don't mistreat any Gobballs when they're about... they simply can't stand to see their furry friends disturbed in any way, and that goes for all animals.

Fecas place glyphs on the fields that cause various effects. These can be offensive (damage and debuffs) or defensive (heals and buffs). Fecas are also prone to reworks, and that means your skills are a bit of a mess.

Fecas can currently gear into the role of best tank in the game, but leveling them can be difficult without sidekicks or a solid and patient group.

Water: Support attacker with a bunch of utility armors and glyphs.
Fire: Direct damage, damaging armors, damaging glyphs.
Earth: Tank-oriented. Utility armors/glyphs and your skills apply armor on yourself.

Xelor
NOT recommended for a first character, poor damage until very late in the game and difficult to solo with
In the beginning there were no clocks, no watches, no cuckoos... not so much as a wooden stick stuck in the mud to tell the time with a simple shadow. Until one day, the god Xelor took up his Hammhour which shone with the light of timeless infinity. His great hammer fell upon the earth, and made a funny little noise - 'TICK'. Xelor struck once more, and behold, a ringing 'TOCK' resounded and Xelor saw that it was good. Placing the noises in his great satchel for safekeeping, he took some gears and, adding two or three Timemites, the god created the Divine Clock.

Xelors have wildly undulated between "bugged to poo poo" and "retarded op god drat" every other patch or so. They're nothing special at the moment, but you’re a great crowd-pleaser. Your allies love you since you donate AP. Your enemies will give you ceaseless attention.

Water: You’re an AP battery! Half the time remove AP, half the time donate AP better. AP removal is iffy. Your party members love you.
Air: Move people around! Move yourself around! You have one damage skill.
Fire: Half the time remove initiative (this does nothing without Aging), half the time have extra AoE. Decent damage. Damage increases dramatically past 100 with proper gear.

Ecaflip
Recommended for a first character (drain-tanking water build)
When you're a god, even the roll of a dice is predictable! But for the mere mortals who circle the blackjack tables of the material world hungrily, there is no such luck. And here, it is the Ecaflips who rule over crook, thief and gold-rusher, playing lady luck with supreme skill and recklessness.

Ecaflips are versatile and fairly mobile fighters with specialties that have a strong focus on RNG buffs, debuffs and critical attacks. Be prepared for the tide to turn for or against you in any given round, and maybe for one of your summons to murder a friend. That's just how Ecaflips roll.

Water: A tree that provides crit buffs, heals, lifeleech, aoe and mobility. Fantastic spells for soloing and providing support in a group.
Fire: A pure damage tree, fire is all about stacking buffs over time and proccing for big damage.
Earth: Designed around high risk/high reward. Currently the weakest of the spell trees.

Masqueraider
Recommended for a first character (fire build)
Hunted for their masks that give them their powers, the Masqueraiders are suspicious of everything.

Their real faces are very rarely seen and no-one truly understands their motives: they can appear to be solitary valiant knights or rebels with their own agenda, they can be guided by their faith, by the values or by their feelings (like vengeance, for example).

We don’t know much about this class but most pubs report it’s pretty good.

Water: Keepaway rear end in a top hat who also heals. Stacking bonus when you dodge.
Air: Pushy rear end in a top hat with bonus knockback damage. Stacking bonus when you crit.
Fire: Gets in the middle of everything and deals AoE damage. Stacking bonus when you get hit.

Foggernaut
Patient, careful, the Foggernauts are waiting for the best moment to take action… and to dent some metal sheet!
That’s what makes them the real champions of survival and evolution. Through the centuries, they’ve been getting better and better, on both intellectual and physical sides. If we were to summarize their functioning in two words: “performance” and “efficiency” would probably be the best fit.

As a Foggernaut, you are a badass terminator doom robocop who doesn’t play by the rules. You deal damage with the unique Stasis element, which allows you to bypass most monster resistance. Your support abilities allow you to make a robot skateboard and zip around the map like some obnoxious 90s corporate mascot, or build and man a giant fuckoff cannon and just shell everything you see. Or you can tank pretty well. (This class isn’t remotely cohesive)

Stasis: Unique “element”. Always hits against weakest elemental resist, but it’s harder to pump up damage. Ranged but only hits in a line.
Earth: Unremarkable damage, but you can make barriers by hitting empty space.
Fire: AoE. Shorter range than fire Cra and cycles between turns of normal damage - high damage - low damage.

Pandawa
What do Pandawas like best? Lifting their pint to the gods with one hand and their friends and enemies in the air with the other. (Usually not at the same time, depending on how many pints they've had). They are excellent fighters and real masters in the art of the right-hook (face-to-face). They're not too bad with an axe either.

Pandawas are status effect machines who are capable of tanking or dealing damage when given time in a fight. Most of the Pandawa’s utility is dependent on their barrel, an object that can be moved around, drank from, and attacked. One of their biggest advantages is mobility; not their own mobility, but their ability to pick up any enemy or ally and throw them anywhere else. Using this, they are one of the better repositioners in the game currently. With enough prep time, Pandawas are capable of filling any role needed.

Water: Stack resist reduction. Fuels fire effects.
Fire: Direct damage. Best used against dizzy enemies. Not great.
Earth: Get up close. Get drunk. Wreck everything. Get a hangover eventually.

The Servers (click one to go to the appropriate download page)
ALL OF THESE ARE AVAILABLE ON THE STEAM CLIENT

Remington and Nox: Wakfu's "International" (North/South American, Canadian and European) and North American servers, respectively. Currently running a terrible subscription model, though this is soon to change. Struggling population and suffers from neglect from Ankama. Active playerbase mostly consists of the same dozen-odd horrible deviantart losers, which while fun to mock do grow tiring after a while. Goons no longer play on this server. (edit: These servers are now Free to Play like Phaeris is, and are the default selection upon starting Wakfu in most regions. Remington has historically had the highest population of all servers but Nox is growing very quickly. Remington has moderate activity throughout the day and heavy activity in European primetime while Nox has somewhat lighter activity but lots of people during North American primetime hours. If you are starting from scratch I recommend playing here.) You can download the Wakfu International account from here. You’ll need to make an account before you can log in.
Click here to go to the International main site

Phaeris: Wakfu's "Asian" (Australia, Philippines, Vietnam) server, often called WAPAC. Currently running a proper F2P model. A cool place for cool people. Tends to receive new content before Remington and is the highly-profitable apple in Ankama’s eye. The newest of the servers, with one of the healthiest populations and growing quickly. Active GMs that interact with players and assist in player-made events. Client is in full english with identical localization to Remington’s. We strongly recommend playing here. (edit: the goon guild is mostly dead and the server has low population outside of Aussie primetime, and it's now hidden behind an obscure option when you install the game more or less dooming it to stagnation... if you want to roll on Phaeris and can't find the server in the list, on the login screen click the little gear icon in the bottom right to open a menu, then click Options->Regions->select "Asia-Pacific") You can download the Wakfu Asia client from here. Remember, you’ll need to make an account to play.
Click here to go to the Asian main site

Wakfu also has French and Chinese servers but these are generally not recommended due to language barriers.

Lag is inconsequential on all servers, this being a turn-based game in combat. We haven't observed any meaningful difference between the international and Asian servers in ping.

Q&A
Q. Is this really free-to-play? The last time I tried Wakfu it advertised itself as free-to-play but I couldn't join a nation without subscribing...

A. It is now. For the last two years, Ankama’s idea of F2P was to allow players to wander the newbie zone and lock the other 99% of content behind subscription. Ankama appeared content with this for a long time even as the playerbase withered and good will gradually ran out. However, after launching the Asian server with an experimental true F2P model, their eyes apparently comically bugged out at the mountains of cash being brought in, and are now moving to apply this model to all regions.

The "new" free-to-play is the real deal: as a free player you're able to do everything in the game except run for governor and vote, though your experience rate will be about 30% lower than it would be if you pay the ~$8 a month for the premium subscription. I know the last part sounds dumb but it's again marginalized by completing challenges in battle.

Q. How much of a cynical, calculated money grab is the cash shop?

A. Again, it's fairly rational, mostly consisting of costumes, pets, and a few boosting consumables--all of which can be traded in game and thus obtainable through the in-game markets.

Q. You've mentioned challenges a couple of times as something that offsets the rate penalties levied against free players. What are they?

A. Challenges are small goals that are randomly set during each battle. If you've played Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, challenges work very similarly to the laws in that game. A challenge's goal will typically be something like "defeat all enemies with back attacks" or "don't use any fire spells", sometimes easy and sometimes truly difficult--you probably won't be able to clear every challenge without a flexible and well-disciplined party. Accomplishing the challenge grants everyone in the party a moderate-to-huge boost to experience and drop rates at the end of the fight. Some fights have more than one challenge, allowing you to rack up truly monstrous bonuses. Due to hard caps on wisdom and prospecting bonuses, mastering challenges goes a long way towards closing the gap between free and paying users.

Q. There's an international server for western players. Why are you playing on the Asia server instead of there?

A. The Asian server Phaeris currently has a much higher population of human-controlled players and a much lower population of angry grognards multiboxing 6 accounts at once compared to the international server Remington, which is otherwise largely a ghost town. Additionally, Phaeris has many more active GM/CMs who routinely hold in-game events. There are also plenty of English speakers (mostly Aussies but a fair number of western ex-Remington players too), so there’s no need to worry about being unable to find anyone to talk or party with.

Q. What are those bags I keep seeing all over the ground? When I mouse over them they show items with pricetags, are they stores?

A. Those are haven bags. Haven bags are a pretty cool feature unique to Wakfu. Your bag is a house you start out with that you can go into at any time (Shift + H). In addition to offering expandable private storage, your bag allows you to list items for sale by means of craftable market racks. You can also put decorations and more rooms in your bag and with the right materials can also outfit it with crafting stations or fields to farm your own private resources.

Q. When I tried to move away from an enemy my turn suddenly ended. What happened?

A. You probably got locked by your enemy when you tried to move away. Lock and Dodge are a pair of competing stats associated with every character, serving as components to tanking in Wakfu. High Lock increase your chance of preventing an enemy in melee range from moving away, and high Dodge increases your chance of escaping from enemies yourself.

I played a Masque to level... 89(ish) when they first came out. My info would be VERY dated, but I could give a lot of old talk about them and the game in general, if anyone wants to hear it.

I only had experience with Water and Air Masques.

I also had a max level Summoner Osamados.

I left briefly after Square Enix lost the rights to NA Wakfu, and we merged with the International forums. I have not kept up with Wakfu in the meantime. I may be interested in downloading it to experience the actual F2P, because it is a very unique and fun MMO.

To date myself: The latest dungeon when I quit was when the Celestial Tofu/Gob dungeons were created. I was part of one of the first groups to encounter and defeat the secret boss at the end of the DBZ reference.

Played on the Asian server a while back with the /vg/ crowd while I was between mmos. Game has a great world and atmosphere, especially if you enjoyed the Dofus or Wakfu cartoons.
Was using an earth ecaflip and got to about 90~ something before the grind overtook me, but had no regrets. Definitely worth playing just for the tactical combat and french hips.

Kitty: I have no idea which boss that is, can you be a little more specific?

The current level cap is 150. If you quit a couple years ago, you'll find tons of new content and a sea of fresh faces if you choose to play on the asia server.

I had a 17x Xelor back when the game was still Dofus, but they revamped the Xelor class every few months for "balance". Got tired of needing to do a complete respec every patch and quit the game.

Wakfu stop drastically changing poo poo every few days?

Looking at the Wakfu Wiki, it was Tofulix. At the time, his Bestiary page was mostly blank, with question marks everywhere. You found him by following a secret path (only showed up when you walked on a specific area) for about 10-12 screens worth of the same path(with a skeleton with Goku hair halfway down it).

He wasn't actually hard (well, he was, it was a level 45 dungeon and he was level 70 and had attacks that dealt 400 damage a round, but I was running noobs in my guild through the new dungeons to get gear, so he was easy.) I made a post about him and how to get to him the same day the dungeon was added.

Indeed, I haven't played in years. Though playing through with none of my old characters would be painful. I guess I might consider doing it, I just saw the thread and felt the need to pop in. Good to see it's actually going F2P, it needed that back when I quit.

Yep! Sram's also Mars, can't forget that one.

The game's totally crawling with cultural references and crude French humor. There's a lot of fun to be had if you can get a solid group of friends to play with!

This still happens but usually there's a fair amount of warning several months in advance before they drastically shake up a class, and they usually only pick 1 or 2 classes every other month to subject to this. Wakfu has more of an issue with skills being outright broken or horribly buggy than monster balance changes without warning, though that is not to say such things have not occurred in the past.

I mostly just roll with it as the game is goofy fun so who cares!

I had a 16x Osa back when I played Dofus, and while the game was fun, I never got the impression that Ankama was a competent at all at gauging what the community wanted. It took them forever to get new content out, and a lot of the changes to classes they'd implement were wholly unwanted and sometimes even uncalled for. Have they shaped up at all or are they still totally bizarre?

(All of that said, I still had a super fun time with Dofus and seeing those Mush Mushs in that screencap above is getting me nostalgic)

I was wondering just yesterday if there was a Wakfu thread, must have posted after I went to bed. I saw this game and thought it looked interesting, anyone planning on making something new?

I would, but the asian site isn't letting me make an account. It just tells me my security code is wrong constantly, even when it's obviously correct.

Edit: Got my new account working via internet explorer, so I'll be able to play later today probably, if anyone has fresh characters.

Edit2: I'm torn between remaking the old Masq I had, or making an Ecaflip because I never tried them despite intending to.

Edit3: Actually, can fire rogues still make those amazing fire bomb walls, that are hilarious once properly set up?

The old guard is in Sufokia but I recommend Amakna if you really want to mess with pubs. It's the most populated nation which means many more opportunities to mess with people as you level up.

edit:
It really doesn't matter if you don't intend to grief, as most leveling takes place on islands past 50 or so. There's a repeatable quest that allows you to switch nation at higher levels if you don't like the one you have.

Yeah, I went with Amakna, I figured it would have the most benefits probably, since it likely takes more zones than the others, what with having twice the players of most of the other nations.

Edit: Who should I prod for invite to this guild thing you guys have? I keep getting invited to pubbie ones.

What about Dofus? Do they have plans to drop the subscription gate for content on that game, too?

A new guild will be going up shortly once I muster the kamas; hopefully there's enough people interested to get parties together. The old guild's a bit dead right now but I might be able to coax people back.

I don't think so. Wakfu was tremendously successful in the F2P market compared to how it did on a subscription model, but Dofus has a heavily entrenched playerbase that has been paying into it for years and Ankama likely feels no pressure to change things.

Back when I played in beta years ago the game basically rewarded you for only leveling a few select skills in a single element given the bonus to damage. Is that still the same? Hybridizing and being able to reset skills into other elements is what made Dofus pretty good.

You still get small damage and resist bonuses for leveling skills in a tree but it is massively offset by gear, and most popular builds utilize skills from more than one tree. You get free spell experience and stat point resets at levels 10 and 30 (spell experience is set to what it would be if you hadn't missed any every reset so do not worry about inefficiency), and can do a monthly quest to reset your stats after that. Additionally, every time Ankama tweaks with a class's skills a free reset is given to that class or to everyone based on the extent of the modification.

In other news I've made a guild called Goon Squid. I'm currently the only member in it, whisper Kokoro Means Heart for an invite.

We go play orbital catch around the curvature of the earth, son.
I can't believe you didn't mention the TV show!

The TV show itself is largely french-made and being 'oohed' and 'ahhed' at by people in the animation industry for its slickness.

It had a highly successful kickstarter earlier this year for the company that made it to create an English dub: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1836563008/wakfu-the-animated-series

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jct9cXZdHwA

The series also has an absurd number of art development books for the show, each book covering a small cluster of episodes within a season, because each episode has a massive assload of art development that goes into it. :getin:

The ankama shop sells them, and they all contain half-french half-english text in them. I actually own one of them, which I bought knowing nothing about the series a few years ago.

To give you an idea of how impressive this show is, I'm in a Toonboom Harmony class right now being taught by a Disney TV guy. Disney TV has been doing amazingly impressive stuff lately - and when we showed this guy Wakfu, he was really blown away when he saw all the advanced visual techniques they were using on the show.

But yeah, I'm a different kind of Wakfu fan - I have little interest in the game (my heart and free time is with Planetside 2 at the moment anyway) but the show artistically & technically represents several steps forward for TV animation, so I'm really interested in it there at least. I do think the animation and art is really quite impressive for the game as well.

That's one ridiculously fancy and well animated (and long!) fight. I'm surprised I've never heard of that TV show before.

It's most likely coming to the US and UK, there was a kickstarter recently that raised a surprising amount of money for Ankama to do English voiceovers.

I played this in beta and a tiny bit at launch, it was pretty fun but the class imbalances were so glaring it just made me not really play.

Overall are the classes in a better place or do Iop's still rule?

Tried my first character as a Sadidas, they're cool but setting up the dolls is prohibitively slow/tricky - it takes me 2 turns to summon one, and three turns if I want to try and use the spell-copying doll which seems to be the most damaging. Do you ever get more than 6 ap? Even just killing 3 cats in the starter area is a life and death battle, and that big cat boss in the cat lady dungeon just murdered me since I had to spend a few turns summoning.

Does it still take massive amounts of time to level up?
Every time I try this game, the grind seems worse than the last.
Also is the best strategy still to hold onto your points and barely improve for tons of levels so you can spend them all on really expensive bonuses?

Sort of. You get a respec at level 30 though, which is right when you could afford your first AP with points, meaning you can spend those first 30 levels f points without worry.

As to Sadidas, it does get more AP, the dolls do get better, and if you post your name in the thread I will bug you with some advice in game.

Edit: as to the grind, it is a little longer because free players get a bit less xp, otherwise it doesn't see too bad, except the fact that trying to find big groups to beat up to get good xp is a pain.

Looking at the official forum like 100% of threads recommend a no-doll build, heh.
