For some stupid reason I'm reading a big fat book about WW2. Did you know poo poo in Russia was insane? Did you know incompetence drove all sides? I liked the Cornelius Ryan books and the bit he said about researching for The Longest Day. He said he hoped to at least find some guys that were on the same beaches on opposite sides so he could compare their thoughts and experiences but he found several instances that individuals he interviewed were actually shooting at each other that day. Also the rubber inflatable tanks brigade was pretty weird.

redshirt posted:For some stupid reason I'm reading a big fat book about WW2. which one? i picked up the new anthony beevor one last fall but have yet to read it. i think the best one=volume history of ww2 that i've read was martin gilbert's. if you want further reading about nazis after finishing the general history (the political aspects of how nazism and ww2 happened always interested me much more than the military stuff) then you can't do any better than richard evans's triology

The Nazi Seizure of Power: The Experience of a Single German Town is a super interesting book that explores how the nazis took power on a local level by examining a county seat in saxony or something. turns out they were largely incompetent venal dickheads on the local level that basically marched around like retards and beat people up
