In the 90s and the early 2000s, Morrowdale was like any other suburban town. Jobs were plentiful and prospects were high. It had none of the hassles of the big city, but Chicago was still an hour bus ride away if you needed any of the many conveniences and thrills it had to offer. But the past couple of decades have taken their toll on America, and Morrowdale is no exception. Everyone still clings to the illusion of polite society, but desperation has made its home in Morrowdale and it's here to stay. Once esteemed members of the community are now jobless outcasts. While those still holding on to their employment look down upon those losers, anxiety creeps into their heads: will they be next? Violence and crime are on the rise. Barred windows have become an increasingly common sight. And as adult life becomes increasingly desperate and the community's grasp on civility loosens, the lives of the town's teenagers are also affected. Morrowdale High was once an optimistic and respectable school, with an enviable budget and a student success rate to match. While the school's football team remains the envy of the state of Illinois and the graduation rate remains relatively high, a sense of apathy has taken over. Students see their parents or their friends' parents and while they hope and pray for change, they know that adult life will be a grim struggle for all but the luckiest. As the school's budget drops, the principal's desperate attempts to renew school spirit and rejuvenate the school's standing does little to stem the natural mental and physical decay overtaking the building. To get a view of Morrowdale High's prospects, one need only look at the dilapidated sign in the courtyard which reads... Morrowdale High: Looking to the The school year began last week, revealing its most stunning transformation. The previous school year had ended with a shooting, an act of violence that rocked the community. While the victims and its perpetrator are all but forgotten, the influence of the event can still be felt. Teachers have become withdrawn, or combative. A metal detector greets each student every day. Cops walk the hallways as armed monitors. And as the tension of the staff rises, so to does the tension of the school's students. Conflicts are more common, fights breaking out, threats and thefts an everyday occurrence. The social divides that make up the painful teenage existence have become so much more divisive. Oh, and there are ghosts and vampires and poo poo. Welcome to Morrowdale. Okay yeah this is the OOC thread, where you post your characters. I may ask additional questions to help flesh things out and set the stage. I encourage y'all to also interact with each other here and/or in the channel as much as you feel inspired to. Together we shall make an awesomely depressing game. If possible, try to have your character submitted before Thursday and we'll try to get the game proper started by the end of the week. Mira Eriksson Mira was the new kid a decade ago, having moved to Illinois with her parents directly from Sweden. Her father had somehow moved here to open up his own branch of the mechanical engineering company he worked for in Sweden. Being the new kid can be hard for most children, but not Mira. She fit right in, her exotic accent and perfect beauty giving her an easy in with the other children. Ten years later, and Mira rules one of Morrowdale's cliques: the fashion club, a quartet of girls with the latest fashions and impeccable styling each and every day. Most of the accent is gone now, but her beauty remains the same: she commutes to Chicago on Saturdays for a part-time modeling job, and there's quite the talk about her among the football team and shop class. But Mira remains cold and separate, spending most of her time with her friends. She's a good student - A+ grades, a variety of extracurricular activities - but no one wants to spend much time at all with her or her clique, frosty and exclusive, attractive but utterly unattainable. They had another member last year: Anna, who was there one day and gone the next - she transferred the next week, and no one know who knows why is saying anything. Mira's one vice, many say, is that she and her clique spend most of their time glued to their cellphones texting. Little do the outsiders know that lurking on Mira's phone - and Claire's, and Jennifer's, and Alicia's phone as well - is a memetic virus, some sort of fragment that has captivated them all. If someone else was to look at their text messages, about half of them would be unintelligble mixes of symbols in extended alphabets: nothing that makes sense. But when Mira and the others look at it, read it, say it - they feel happy and safe, and they keep repeating it to each other. Whatever it is, they don't know - they're barely aware of it - but they know it is a secret, and that it is precious. Right now, it has little hold over the fashion club, just a need to survive, and it certainly hasn't granted them any abilities. But who knows what might change? pre:Name: Mira Eriksson Look: stunning, captivating eyes Skin: Queen Origin: firstborn of the hive mind Stats Hot +2 Cold +1 *highlight Volatile -1 Dark -1 *highlight Darkest Self They’ve failed you. Darius Culpepper The Culpeppers are, to put it lightly, leeches; while the majority of Morrowdale's citizens have fallen on hard times, the Culpeppers continue to thrive in their ancestral mansion, profiting off all the cut hours and layoffs that have so gravely wounded the small town. Darius Culpepper, the only heir to the Culpepper "empire," recognizes this privilege and abuses it. He's infamous in the town for his many, many criminal acts; after all, you can get away with anything if you have enough money, and boy does he ever. He isn't terribly popular at school due to being a complete jackass and his parents essentially ruining the local economy, but hey. Who needs friends when you've got money? Secretly, he loathes his parents for making him an outcast, and for being completely absent when he most needs support (them being too busy with either work or luxury to give him any of their time). Another thing that nobody knows is that Darius is a witch - fascinated by the occult since a young age and left to his own devices, he began to dabble in magic to fill his time. He's sent more than a few kids to the nurse's office with splitting headaches and weird hallucinations, but nothing's ever been traced back to him. pre:Name: Darius Culpepper Look: Coy, smirking eyes Skin: Witch Origin: Dabbler Stats: Hot +0 Cold +2 Volatile -1 Dark +1 Sex Move After sex, you can take a sympathetic token from them. The LORD will never be willing to forgive them; his wrath and zeal will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will fall on them, and the LORD will blot out their names from under heaven. - Deuteronomy 29:20 When complete ennui hits a population like Morrowdale's, they need guidance. A light to lead them away from darkness. Father Ayers, of the United Methodist Church (the only church in town), is a kind, gentle man. Despite all hardships the town has been and is indeed still enduring, he goes with the grace of God and finds the lost souls in need of aid. He listens to everybody's complaints and sends them on their way with the Lord's word and faith to strengthen their lives. Even in the face of such utter despair, he is one of the pillars of the community that still holds out hope, and faith. For when God's light abandons these men and women as they have abandoned themselves, what else can there be but darkness? His daughter, Delilah, is much in his image. In general, she is a quiet, unassuming girl, with a soft smile. She is polite and reserved, though some people are unnerved by her fiercely intense eyes. For behind her kind words, there lies a passionate hatred for the town that her father so desperately tries to save. For she takes her faith not from love for the stricken or hope for the future. Delilah's faith is grounded in the angel that speaks to her, a warrior-emissary of God who finds nothing but contempt for the dullness and apathy to which the souls of Morrowdale have surrendered themselves. The voice had always been there, whispering to her words of strength, of hope. She had not always been as strong as she is now, no - never quite alone, but always to the side, the pastor's girl. With the angel's voice she found the strength to continue - it took the pain away, even in her darkest hours. But when the shooting killed two of her best friends, the angel's voice returned in full strength. There was hate, now, hate for the violence, for the desperation of Morrowdale, and it called upon her to be a servant of the Light. And Delilah did not refuse. How could she? When a creature of God had aided her for so long... who was she to aid it in return? She was on a righteous path, now, one that was above reproach, above mortal laws. It was time to turn Morrowdale back to the light, away from the darkness that had consumed them. pre:Name: Delilah Ayers Look: Quiet, Piercing Eyes Skin: Infernal Origin: Chosen Stats: Hot: 0 Cold: -1 Volatile: 2 Dark: 1 Moves Sex Move When you have sex, the dark power loses a String on you and gains a String on whoever you had sex with. Every demand you fulfill brings you a little closer to feeling whole again, to rekindling the fire in your heart. Whenever you fulfill those demands, remove a String it holds on you. You escape your Darkest Self when the dark power has no more Strings on you, or when you agree to an even worse bargain with an even more dangerous dark power. Soul Debt Name a dark power that you owe a debt to. Choose two Bargains that it has made with you. It can hold Strings against you. Ophelia Orwell You've heard the story before - ostracized loner gets bullied by the popular kids, then brings a gun to school and evens the odds. It's all over the news, every week, every day, and Ophelia Orwell was nothing if not an impressionable young woman. She tried her best to be accepted, she really did, it's not her fault! When one group rejected her for being "weird," she tried another, and another, until there was no one left at school that didn't laugh at her when she went slumping by with her books crushed to her chest. She tried to take solace in reading, and in nature, but the decay of Morrowdale had eaten into her heart. So she took the guns from her parents' unlocked gun safe - they had trusted her judgement - and the next day, she took them, fully loaded, to school. And that was that. Ophelia was glad when the police arrived with their snipers and assault rifles. Finally, she was important. Finally, she had made a mark on the world. Morrowdale tried to cover up the incident, fearing copycat shooters; in the end, they settled for memorials for Ophelia's victims, and did their best to obscure the identity of the culprit. The metal detectors at the school are the only memory of the sad, lonely girl who carried her grief and solitude to the grave. ...except, sometimes, if you stand in the freshly-repainted hall near Mr. Dawford's room and close your eyes, you can hear a young woman crying. Ophelia looks more or less like a living girl, save for the part where she's a bit transparent, and sometimes it takes her a couple of tries to touch something. At least in death she doesn't get acne anymore. She's very pale and a little chubby, with long, thick, shaggy unbrushed hair and heavy black-rimmed glasses, and wears the same clothes she did when she was killed - a black hoodie and baggy jeans. There are gunshot holes in the hoodie that go straight through her torso. pre:Name: Ophelia Orwell Look: brooding, hollow eyes Skin: Ghost Origin: a confused death Stats Hot -1 Cold 1 Volatile 0 Dark 1 Darkest Self You become invisible. No one can see you, feel you, or hear your voice. You can still affect inanimate objects, but this is your only avenue of communication. Moves Sex Move When you have sex with someone, you both get to ask a question of one another's characters. This can be spoken by your character, or simply asked player-to-player. The other person must answer honestly and directly. Unresolved Trauma Whenever you project the blame and trauma of your death onto your current situation, roll with dark. Evil Sagan posted:Question for Ophelia Ophelia had always admired the cheerleading team from afar - their athleticism, their popularity. Though she knew she would never be able to make tryouts (too chubby and clumsy), she tried to make friends with them. One of the newer recruits, Luca Brown, was one of the few people who accepted Ophelia's friendship. They even met outside of school a few times. Ophelia felt her wounded heart growing warm again, until one day when Luca suddenly became cold and distant. Through careful eavesdropping, Ophelia found out that the other cheerleaders had discovered her and Luca's growing friendship and had set an ultimatum: she would join the rest of them in mocking Ophelia, or she would be on the outside along with her new pal. Luca chose the cheerleaders. Ophelia chose something much worse.

Grace Clark was part of Delilah's circle of friends prior to the shooting, along with Tara Summers and Cindy Waller. In the wake of the latter two's death, Grace and Delilah found support in eachother's loss, and grew a lot closer together. They just had eachother, now. So when the angel's judgement comes, and Morrowdale will repent; well, at least Delilah knows that Grace is not like the rest of them, or her family. As her friend, she is protected. The angel made no promises of this, of course, but he didn't need to. Delilah knows it. She has faith. And faith conquers all.

Mira, it's no secret that your clique can be a little off-putting, but when you want someone in, they eventually want in themselves. Except for one person. Despite all your charm, looks, and most importantly popularity, there is one person in particular that you can't quite get to enter the fold. Who are they? Everyone, it's time to complete backstories. Decide which of the player characters will benefit (or "benefit" from the various entries in the Backstory section of your skin. If you need to, work it out in IRC or in here, but remember that you don't need to get all the details set in stone. Just assign the strings and know the facts are true. When everyone has assigned strings, we'll move on.

Hey, I just wanted to reassure people that I am noticing the uneven amount of play some characters get over certain periods of time. Without getting into too much detail, this is a side effect of schedule differences in combination with how I handle "game time." I've got everyone in mind and opportunities to resume play will come up soon for those who might appear to be dead in the water at the moment. Because of the nature of PbP play in a game that doesn't force people to group up in parties (which is a good thing, I think), sometimes an active day of roleplaying will sometimes be followed by a bit of downtime. Thanks for being such an awesome roleplaying group thus far. I have rarely been so invested in an RPG myself, and it sounds like y'all are having fun too so I'm pretty hype.
