let's be honest, the characters have all become unfunny and unrealistic caricatures of themselves, but the base of the problem with the show is the lazy (though often try-hard) writing

One thing though is that a large part of the Simpsons still sort of remains completely static to the 90s. Occasionally they'll dress up a bit, get some new tech and pop culture stuff, but all of them feel like Springfield never moved beyond the 90s. It's something that really jumped out at me in an episode a few years ago where Bart I think had a crush on a girl in another 4th grade class and every single kid in her class, all of them new characters, came off as a lot more modern in their look and feel.

Simpsons started to turn downhill when Hartman died (during season 10).

edit: Actually upon second thought maybe not started, but it certainly seemed to take a dive after that.

nearly every "classic" TV show sucked for at least a season or two before it got good, in today's market nearly every stone-cold comedy classic would have been cancelled after like 4 episodes

nah that ain't true. He gets a lot of free passes for bringing back Cosmos out of his own pocket. He's also a really good VA and singer and the album he put out actually owns. Family Guy is basically the only thing he puts out that's bad, and even that's not as awful as the internet fatwa would have you believe, although it is pretty bad.

in any case the only involvement he has in American Dad is voice acting, he doesn't write for it, which is why it's way better than Family Guy and actually worth watching half the time

What does Matt Groening have to do with the Simpsons now? From what it sounds like he's been pretty much hands off since like season 4 or so.

Sam Simon abandoned ship in 1993 and he still gets more than ten million dollars a year from it, it's probably even better for Groening who is still "creative consultant" (whatever that means)

i've always figured that since the first 2 seasons were pretty unfunny, when matt groening presumably had total control, that maybe matt isn't actually all that funny and the golden seasons came more from good writers on staff

although, futurama's first few seasons were pretty good...not sure how hands-on he was with that show

Eh, season 1 and 2 have their moments, and season 2 has more golden year iconic episodes than I remembered.

Futurama had the advantage of coming in on the heels of the Simpson's golden years, and as a fresh concept/show, everything it pulled was new.

If you've ever read any of groening's comics you would know that he is a terribly unfunny rear end in a top hat; Life In Hell is basically the precursor to every lovely webcomic today where the author just rants and raves about things that piss him off with no actual jokes or humor

I bought the Huge Book of Hell back when I was young and stupider.

The main things I gathered from it is that Groening thinks public schools force kids to sit in padded cells and that he probably has fantasies about wearing a Zorro mask while sucking off gay midgets.
