Sometimes I see a 200,000 word OP about a TV show or see somebody really analyzing and playing with numbers in a game like EVE or memorizing a books' worth of data about some mmo.... My q is this: why not funnel all that brain power and memory and effort into a trade or skill that will earn you money and respect? I'm convinced that at a basic level, it all amounts to the same thing.

Then he's not the next Hitler. Because the next Hitler will be Miley Cyrus. The Hitler after that will only kill 3 jews before he gets caught but the Hitler after THAT! Poosh I wouldn't want to be living then ... so I'll just gas myself right now to save him the bother

as for TV shows, as someone with an English degree let me assure you that the ability to analyze fiction has no useful applications whatsoever beyond analyzing fiction. it's a lot of fun, though.

maybe not everyone is obsessed with money, and I mean the only trade everyone really respects is medicine and even that's going downhill fast, so what's the question again?

sure you could be an awesome scientist but in America they get about as much money/respect as professional gamers, soooo

This was exactly my thought when I got way too into some spergy number game so I tried to channel my systematic minmaxing of them into studies of game theory, risk management, probability, misc. applied math. The last game I did this with was Factorio. Now I have a bunch of code in my portfolio and resume that does poo poo like optimally play cookie clicker, which is just the knapsack problem in dumb browser game form.

i can answer this honestly OP, i don't specialise in one game but i play lots of different ones

it's just to pass the time, i don't really have any job prospects and my back is real hosed, so i just play stuff to entertain myself

this doesn't mean i've neglected learning new things, i've taught myself audio engineering and have learnt to play several instruments and that may actually lead to employment in the future, but for now it's just a lot of waiting

Listen to reason, man. Why make your job difficult?
you knwo what this is exactly what ive realized about my own life lately. video games are such a tremendous waste of time, anyway im in the process of going back to school to eventually get into a plumbing apprenticeship. i dont mind getting dirty and the starting pay is like $28/h and at least mario was a plumber right?

I had that realization when I was EVE trading for hours a day and now I trade on financial markets and do alright for myself I suppose. Nothing I could live on comfortably but in the black for sure.

I still play games a lot though, they're just more fun than real life sometimes. Overall I'd say that games allow you to do poo poo you'd otherwise never be able to do. For example, I funnel a bunch of brain power into RTS games and simulation and RPG games because I'm probably never going to be the leader of a country or a general of an army so a video game is the next best thing.
