I'm back playing Icesus again, if any of the kekeke+ crew is still around. I switched from air priest to water priest and mostly like it better, though I can't both cast WP spells and use a shield as beholder. I'm hopelessly addicted to the combo of flying, ultra fast Regen ticks, and high spr and don't know how to stop.

I read somewhere that was the case. However, I thought it was here, so now I'm not sure.

To hell with that. These days i'm quenching the thirst by playing Aberoth (a kid's game, but addictive as hell)

after playing it a bit i ended up dropping it, it’s missing a lot of the complexity of most ire games and it’s replaced it with some really uneven writing and it seems to be waiting for the community to fill in all of the blanks

it might be worth playing in a few years once the players and devs have finished making the game

Are you in the discord? Some people are playing Icesus again.

I was until the new version of Oxygen Not Included came out, but I'll start hopping on some more. I don't bother with discord; I don't have (nor want) a mic and the game already has chat channels.

We just use it as a chat client, it doesn't necessitate a mic, it's just a chatroom like irc. But do your thing!

I've been looking into trying a MUD again for the first time in a while. I'm either gonna give Ancient Anguish(Necromancers sound neat) or Realms of Despair(I don't know why, but descriptions of it really gave me a vibe of Dragon's Gate which I used to love) a try.

On a different note, I like how outdated some of the descriptions are. Game having things like "PC Gamer's Best MUD 1997!" and "Consistently over 100 players online!"(Currently online: 0, Recent High: 6) It's sorta funny, but also makes me sad because it shows how MUDs are dying.

Ancient Anguish was my first mud. Necros are pretty good, but the thing about AA is standard play is expected to be very consumable-intensive or you spend forever recovering SP. Plus, gear doesn't save across reboots (and gets dropped on logout). There are two classes that don't really have to bother much with consumables or gear, shapeshifters (especially earth clan) and jaochis.

While you don't have a huuuge pile of consistently populated MUDs to choose from, there are still many MUDs going strong, both RPI and hack&slash

Is there any minimum-hassle way of faking spawn windows a la MUSHclient or SimpleMU using one of the CLI clients out there? I could munge together something with writing to a file with triggers, tmux panes, and tail -f, but that seems like it'd suck to maintain.

Sooo Avendar's getting a bit of a spike in playerbase lately, and there's a major update slated to roll out in the next week or so.

Might be worth giving another shot if any of you RP+PvP+ types are down.

I made a char but it's been awhile since I played Diku style MUDs. Did I screw up by training Mana (just used 1 train) at level 1?

Reene

:justpost:

Depends on your class honestly. People generally don't train mana though because HP is regarded as way more valuable (once you have your stats where you want them) and there's more ways to get lots of mana through gear.

Also if you haven't be sure to drop into the Discord! Lots of people hang out there and can give advice. http://discord.gg/avendar

The update dropped a couple weeks ago by the way. Druids got reworked, Necromancers got updates, Psions got some preliminary updates, the task system was added, Gogoth the undead city got a full rewrite, and a bunch of other poo poo.

I only ever really played Dragonrealms, but that world had so many 'rooms' and items and monsters and skills and verbs and lore and everything else, are all muds about equivalent in scope? The setting was so rich, and your options for character expression so nuanced and robust, it seems tragic to me that there could be dozens if not hundreds of single digit population count muds still out there.

GS? Not that I've played GS much.. just guessing.

You might check out Aardwolf. It was originally a DIKU variant but has been rewritten to be original code (http://www.aardwolf.com/v3/v3diku.html). That said, it started as a DIKU variant and I assume retains a lot of the "flavor" or "feel", though it may be diluted or lost over the years.

Aardwolf is large and complex, with many different systems, but they are all somewhat "discrete". It's RP-lite (at most) and has a loose overarching lore, but each area is discrete. Areas were all re-written to avoid copyrights but a lot of areas reference/reflect a lot of popular fiction. ST:TNG, MTG, WoT, etc. Again, you won't find any reference to those except in the helpfiles anymore as everything has been renamed, but you can definitely see the influence.

It's also still fairly well populated with a couple hundred on at any time. If nothing else, it's worth checking out.
