Also, the only existential dread I've ever gotten from RPGs is when I'm writing a pbp app that I'm not entirely happy with. Coincidentally, I am writing at least one pbp app that I'm not entirely happy with right now, possibly two. Ha ha. Ha. Ha.

Everytime I dm'd 4th I was worried the players would realise that I had no idea what I was doing, and each time they seemed to have fun and they all kept coming back.

I am still sure it was an elaborate ruse and it ended before they had a chance to pull their heel turn.

Ain't know if this really applies, but what the hell.

So I was running this demo of The Quiet Year and people were just narrating sick people left right and center. Eventually it materialized that there was some deadly disease happening everywhere around the little settlement and starting to creep in. When I drew the Autumn card about a disease I had no problem saying that we had no clue what was going on. We started up projects to... deal with it? Somehow? We didn't really know.

Near the end of Autumn we found the military had occupied a biological research facility to the north and we finally began to get in touch with them. Ray of hope!

But then Winter hit.

Two cards in, we get a card that instantly completes a project somehow and I'm like, great, there was an intact codebook in the weapon bunker and that convinces them we're real thinking people and not particularly astute zombies! All we need is another month for the cure!

As long as nothing bad comes out of the deck.

The very next week, the Frost Shepherds arrive.

When, after making an Ops Director for an AdEva game who was going to be the estranged father for another PC and sitting in on my first session, one of the players who was playing an adult pilot (ugh) told me OOC 'Just so you know, my 28 year old tactical operator dude is loving your PC's 14 year old daughter, is that gonna be a problem'

I mentioned it already in the bad experiences thread, but that was the moment I dropped that game and sprinted the hell away from that group forever.

God do I ever know that. I never allowed it in any game of AdEva I ran. Hell, another butt-clench moment from AdEva was a time a player in one of my on-line groups told me his favorite part of the game I was running was 'the shipping' and complained about how his pilot wasn't getting any from the female pilots with his awkward anime come-on stuff. That was when I realized he wasn't just playing an awkward teen, he was, in fact, an awkward 30 something dude, and when he told me I should be doing more to promote sex/romance between the pilots I just booted him on the spot.

AdEva is a fun game, but you better know the people you're playing well (everyone else in the group was someone I knew personally), because the actual developer community is skeevy as gently caress. We just wanted to play doomed terrified teenagers in crazy robots, damnit.

I do think there was interesting roleplaying potential if, say, he'd been a teenager pilot simply dating another PC's daughter (and asked beforehand about it, too). The age gap and the "Oh, they're loving" are the really sleevy parts here (and you were right to leave that game).

But, yeah, some players just are sleazy.

Oh, yeah. Romance happens in AdEva. It's just best handled like, say, Monster Hearts rather than creepy anime porn. It's hard to play a bunch of teenagers who are facing existential horror without them fumbling around with feelings and relationships and such, it's just those should be the focus, you know? It's like how Monsterhearts has sex moves, of course, but generally isn't intended to be an X-rated game.

I really want to run Monsterhearts some day. I bought it on a whim and with my regular group, two players really wanted to try it but the third vetoed it.

That whole campaign was a loving cavalcade of terrible things. Like, I'm pretty sure it hit every "this is a terrible gaming thing" point we regularly bring up around these parts, the highlights being insane power creep, DBZ-style combat heightening, two Mary Sues (one was the GM's pet NPC, the other was his wife's character), every fight scene being The Matrix, enemies never retreating no matter how badly we destroyed them, the aforementioned shipping-type thing, and the hard railroaded plot.

Someday I'll write a long thing about it for the Worst Experiences thread.

Yeah, you pretty much get it about Monsterhearts. Too bad at least one certain player in the one Monsterhearts game I was in didn't get it. I still had fun playing my gothic Mortal obsessed with the idea of darkness and "die die mundanes" interior monologues, but it would've been better without their sleaziness.

I do recommend giving it a try. With cool players.

Our group started a Savage Worlds game last night, but we have been through so many different systems in the last year, we included the Escalation die from 13th Age for the first combat, and it wasn't until round 3 we realized it wasn't even from that game.

But it was awesome and we're using Savage Worlds to run a Mobile Suit Gundam game so we said "gently caress it" and we're leaving it in.

Escalation Die belongs in every game.

The only thing that comes close to this is when I was sitting in on a game of oMage with my usual group of friends and an argument between two of the characters quickly developed into a heated argument between two of the players, ending with the GM calmly ending the session and politely asking everyone to cool down.

Turns out that the two players were angry at each other for real-life reasons, but at the time I was just like, "Whaaaaat the fuuuuck this is the most awkward thing in existence."

The whole 'gently caress you you creepy anime fucks' thing is what drew me to the whole thing in the first place and got me running AdEva. That, and the fact that I got to have a PC slowly lose the boundary between her personal existence and the existence of others, melt into goo, go on an insane mind-trip where she was finally able to see herself from the perspective of others and realize what a horribly arrogant jerk she often was, eventually reconstitute herself, and overcome her crippling ego.

I mean The Tang Incident was one of the highlights of DMing, for me. It's just absolutely hilarious and sad that the people Eva was written to condemn are the people who tend to love Eva, and who make all kinds of classes for AdEva like 'My PC is Gurren Lagen!' or 'I'm a 13 year old super genius who customized my robot and built it himself and it totally obeys me and doesn't do weird mind-fuckery!' It's like, guy, the weird mind fuckery is WHY WE ARE HERE.
