Nope, you have to actually hurt them to get On Damage. Life Loss doesn't count either.

No, actually I really do hate Dashes in general. I recognize that they serve a vital purpose in the game's mechanics, but they're booooooooooring. I much prefer the Beta/Ex/Almighty versions of the base.

You know, I agree. Too many Beats revolve around one character avoiding the other entirely, and it's just kinda boring. Maybe it's good for Specialists or Disruptors or whatever, but I just prefer to get down and dirty and punch things.

I considered Bursting thinking you couldn't avoid it even with a Dash, but then I remembered you could just move under my minimum range.

I think it should only be 2 damage from Clinhyde, and therefore only 4 from Mikhail. 2 - 1 + 1 = 2, unless I'm missing a damage buff somewhere.

Burst would have been literally the worst move for him in any case - the obvious move for you was a Grasp, and if you did that, you could slam him up against the wall for the 2 life loss and then pull him back toward you with Grasp to stay under his minimum range. Anything other than a Burst meant he could either guarantee the trade or at the very least not take damage.
