One of my best fiends once went on a rant about how 9/11 was perpetrated by the government. I spent the next hour logically explaining that the government can't both be completely incompetent (which it most certainly is) and at the same time capable of not only pulling off 9/11 but covering up all evidence that they did it. Also that he was just being racist thinking that a handful of brown people with box cutters couldn't kill thousands. He ended up getting really depressed and now he doesn't talk about it any more.

These people also ignore all the proper hosed up stuff the governments of the world have done or failed miserably at. poo poo like CIA false flags to stir up anti-Castro sentiment, undermining legit governments in Europe for being too socialist, installing Pinochet, the plot against Howard Wilson, Hillsborough Disaster and the loving on-going paedophile rings in the top flights of the British government. This is more interesting (and real) than GWB did 9/11.

What I loving hate is when someone comes out with some proper racist poo poo only they say it rhetorically because they are convinced that everyone who has the same skin colour/ethnicity as them feels the same way. That and when someone starts a sentence with "I'm not being racist but..." because this is always immediately followed by the most disgustingly racist comment imaginable.

i remember being upset with 9/11 conspiracies, which were extremely common during the bush years. apparently more than half of democrats believed that bush did 9/11, which isn't surprising to anyone who talked to them during those years, probably in no small part because of that schizophrenic no-planes Loose Change video which was so popular on the internet at the time. in polite company, whenever i think anything controversial, which is pretty much always, i keep my mouth shut. if i have to say something, i try to find the most innocuous possible thing to say, and i smile while i say it. this is a lesson i've learned the hard way. it's hard to respect someone with no professionalism. drinking privately with a friend, i'm much more likely to relax and be blunt, and in these settings i don't really care what my friend admits to because it will just add to their novelty and my appreciation of their honesty, laughs all around at the absurdity of life. you can only truly appreciate someone once you bond over your shared insanity.

the only person I know that unironically does the whole "I'm not racist but..." thing is my mother, she'll occasionally say that then say something gross and racist, but it's more innocent "it was a different time" systemic type racist comments rather than "I'm not racist but black people aren't humans" or something mostly among my friends it's the occasional transphobic comment but that's still cool I guess, nerds don't like chicks with dicks
