Layzner is probably the best show Ryousuke Takahashi's done not called Votoms. The story is decent as far as 80's Sunrise robot shows go but where it shines is the animation and direction. You can find some of the best mecha animation from the 80's in Layzner.

It makes sense though. He talks about how both the trainer and the actual combat mechs use the same power plant so more armor just slows it down. Armor's fine till people start shooting lasers and rocket punches. Also Inaho is basically Chirico without the PTSD so he's going to stubbornly stick same mech till god gives him the best one at the end of the series.
