The Interrupters prolly don't have a chance and that's a shame. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/interrupters/ I'd say they don't have a shot, but everyone in Chicago does BLAP BLAP

People in southern Illinois never loving shut up about how dangerous Chicago is like every loving minute of their lives they're just suffering chronic anxiety about a city that they couldn't afford to go to even if they wanted to. They're also constantly mad about chicago existing in the first place for some reason and they'd rather be a part of kentucky. These people are so loving retarded that they'd rather be a part of kentucky.

And murders are lower, but I think shootings up vs last year. You gotta admit, it's not all roses up there.

Nope, in 2012 the murder and non negligent manslaughter rate per 100,000 in chicago was 18.5, higher than the national average of 7 something sure. Not murder capital of the US though. Here are some cities with higher rates: Atlanta (19), Baltimore (34.9), Cleveland (21.3), New Orleans (53.2), and goddamn Detroit (54.6). The 2011 rates are pretty similar. Maybe it's just murder capital of Illinois then? Nope. East St. Louis get that honor with a third world nation score of 62.9 per 100,000. Not even close. Chicago did have the most murders of any US city in 2012, but it's the third largest city in the US so no poo poo. Any given year it stands a good chance of winning that award just due to how numbers work.

People think of American segregation as something that only happened in the South in the Jim Crow era, but there was (and is) plenty of it in Chicago and other Northern cities. The segregation definitely fuels the violence. I grew up in a "nice" (i.e. white) neighborhood that bordered on a "bad" (i.e. black) neighborhood and I never really felt any reason fear for my safety. My parents forbade me from going past Nth Street, though.

Reminder that the CPD under Rahm Emanuel is cooking the gently caress out of the city's crime stats, sometimes to the point of letting brutal murders get classified as minor death investigations and letting murderers go free http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/May-2014/Chicago-crime-rates/ Chicago Magazine posted:On March 17, two days after Maurice Harris got pummeled, police were called to the top floor of a red-brick three-flat in Pilsen. A man who had just returned home from a trip smelled a “foul odor” coming from a plastic air mattress in the bedroom of a roommate he hadn’t seen in weeks. When he started pulling debris from the mattress, he saw a grotesquely decomposed human head. The rest of the body was cocooned in garbage.

Animal-Mother posted:What the gently caress is the purpose of this? Basically the ol' sweep it under the rug solution so you can do the whole crime reduction talking point during election time. NYPD did a similar clever trick to help meet their crime reduction quota. Changing the numbers is sort of easier than actually fixing the problem.

Last time I was at the Field I had a brief chat with a lady who was sequencing fish DNA. I think it's great that there are places where people can learn about how science is done.

Another nice place in Chicago is the Winter Garden on the ninth floor of the Harold Washington Library: Hardly anyone goes there, so it's a nice place to read under natural light. If you are a high schooler you should also check out the teen room on the first floor - I'm jealous of all the stuff they get to do. Why couldn't they have had that room when I was a teenager?

so what i'm gathering here is that when deus ex-esque collapse of the US central government scenarios come true in 2-3 decades, chicago will be one of those places where PMCs who are in cahoots with shady one-world government conspiracy groups do the policing and gun down rioters and poo poo without any accountability or whatever
