But we can always hope that there's some really badass and cool-looking alien robots who will come and wipe us out as soon as they notice that we're one of those things that might spread through the whole galaxy if we're not stopped. Galactic antibodies would be a great way to die. I hope it's that, and not one of the really lame reasons, like "life just loses interest in exploring the galaxy because they eventually invent the internet and after that they are too busy jacking off".

Why is it taking so long to send something to Europa ? We landed a probe on Titan which is farther away. I like Mars, but it's getting too much the attention. loving scientists, I'm so mad right now

Planetary protection advisory boards don't like the idea of landing anything anywhere there's stuff that is probably alive. Because we might accidentally kill it all. Serious.

We still do it. We land poo poo on Mars when we think there might be stuff alive there. You just have to argue it through another set of boards, and not include anything on the mission that might kill the hypothetical microbes, and sterilise everything before you launch it in the hopes of reducing bacteria to tens per square metre of surface (you can't do this, but you do a bunch of poo poo and hope it works well enough to satisfy people). Then, after ~10 years of planning and building and a few years in space, you get to Mars with your multi-billion dollar spacecraft and ton of lander and find that your loving detectors are contaminated anyway.

Wouldn't Jupiter's intense radiation sterilize any It's an issue of chemical contamination, not biological. There's no real risk of carrying smallpox to the new world when it's literally a new world. Terrestrial bacteria has evolved to interact with terrestrial organisms. The ending to War of the Worlds wouldn't happen because Earth germs aren't built to infect anything but Earth residents. There's pretty much zero chance of ever contracting or transmitting space aids. Contamination will gently caress up tests for local bacteria though, so it's still important to spray your probes with Lysol before launching. Finding aliens would just give the religious nuts a new enemy to fight against and claim they are being oppressed by. They live for that poo poo. Plus with the Republicans cannibalizing their own, and the way they're losing ground to the socialist fist of the homosexual agenda, they'd love to have an enemy to fight that's a thousand light years away and who don't speak the language. They'd finally have a battle they can pretend to be winning.

My own suspicion is that we are alone in the physical universe and that if something along these lines occurs it will be demonic or satanic in nature. Perhaps it will be a part of a final end times scenario. Perhaps they will “arrive” with tales of how we were really created, directly contradicting the Word of God. Regardless of any such claims, I urge one and all to trust the Bible, specifically the Jesus Christ of the Bible, more than you trust your own lying eyes or the other-worldly claims of aliens, political leaders, media, scientists, and even major religious leaders. We should remember that “the heavens attest to HIS glory.” Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Decebal posted:Is there a realistic chance that we'll see images/video from the Europa ocean in the next 20 years ? No. There is a mission intended for Europa working its way through NASA - who knows if it will ever launch - but it's only intended to fly very close to Europa, not land. A landing is a long ways away simply because we don't have the tech yet to get through the ice surface without loving everything up. It would have to be some kind of nuclear drill that could heat up and sterilize the ice as it went down -- dozens of miles of the thickest ice you can imagine.

Can we all agree to stop pretending to be excited for the lovely life we all know is probably within space-reach? I won't be cheering until we at least find a space-cow or better. redshirt posted:No. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPCpNlVJBr8&t=82s I like to be optimistic about this mission and hope it gets there within 50 years. A big part of why I went into nuclear eng was to maybe have a hand in the design the nuclear drop weight. Also I don't think we have a very good idea about the thickness of the ice at all, it could be two miles or two dozen*. The ocean underneath might or might not be continuous I've heard too, so there's the danger of drilling down through ice into rock. That'd be pretty disappointing. *unless there's been more research out about this I haven't seen

The Protagonist posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPCpNlVJBr8&t=82s The last I read about Europa is that there are pockets of much thinner ice, including subsurface lakes that interact with both the surface of the moon and the ocean below. These lakes are a far more realistic target than the global ocean, which is at a minimum under 10 miles of ice. The lakes are covered in places by less than a mile of ice.
