i struggle with this concept in films where rape would be commonplace. is it better to ignore it completely? to imply but not show? Or to depict it?

I think the larger issue is that the rape victims are almost never characters in their own right, just prop victims to showcase the brutality of the setting (see, Mad Max movies)
