Maybe the judges like Sandhya because after thirteen seasons they're bored to death and even if her looks are confusing and weird, at least they're visually interesting and different?

The sewing on that raincoat-hat ensemble was so, so bad. Angela should have stayed. I feel for the girl, she clearly has an anxiety disorder. Her outfit was better than the other two. Oh well.

The first time she won I think their internal poll said 87% of fans hated her outfit. Not much different this time. They've poo poo on so many people for making crafty pieces and she is the queen of craft.

So congratulations once again to Sandhya, who is certain to become even more hated by her fellow designers after this one.

But it totally deserved to win.

Now before you start screaming, we want you to quickly scroll down to remind yourself of what everyone else made for this challenge, then scroll back up to hear us out. We’ll wait. You don’t have to read everything yet; just a quick scrolldown to compare ever other entry on the runway to this one. Go.

Back so soon? You didn’t scroll down, you bullshitter. We’ll wait some more.

Okay. Now.

WAS THAT THE MOST BASIC PILE OF DEPARTMENT STORE CRAP YOU EVER SAW?

Look, the brief was to design something for 2034, which, as they reminded us over and over again, because they fear their audience can’t do basic math, is twenty years in the future. Except for a few half-assed and totally cliched attempts to be forward-thinking, everything on that runway looked totally off-the-rack 2014. Everything but Sandhya’s entry (and one other we’ll get to). We honestly thought she was nuts when she was putting this together in the workroom, but when we saw it in context with everyone else’s entry, we had no choice but to declare it the most original, editorial and forward-thinking of the entries. T & Lo are generally split down the middle on her designs, but we’re both in agreement that so far, she’s the only designer thinking outside the box in this crowd. And it might even be said that she’s one of the best outside-the-box designers the show’s had in several seasons.

I've really gone off TLo the last couple of years. They're getting awfully full of themselves as masters of an empire that consists mostly of a blog, which in turn consists mostly of reposted photos with the word "discuss" underneath. They had a post last week (maybe the project runway one, but definitely one very close to it in time) where they prepared this wordy statement on some issue, completely unprompted, and were like "you can quote us on this."

Like guys. You have roughly the same level of exposure and access as Tavi Gevinson in middle school. Reel it in a little.

All this to say I think their Project Runway reviews of late are less about their genuine responses to the work and more about what they think will position them as fashion insiders.

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!

Sandhya is like a neo-Patricia from S11, down to the first episode awful dye-job win.

I kinda call bullshit on the current-day designs argument, Emily/Samantha/...Fade maybe? were my top designs out of that episode and I don't think you can use the current-day argument on any of them. Plus it seems like the instructions were to straight-up avoid going super-futuristic. How many challenges could you make this video for?

It really doesn't help that they, by their own admission, have become super tired of the Project Runway "brand". I can remember a time when every single gown would get a separate post and discussion. These days, they often can't muster up more than a single "meh". I understand that's in part the shows fault. All these ill-conceived one day challenges often don't lead to interesting results. And I know it's hard to keep motivated after 12+ seasons. Still, it's a shame.

I also don't think 'DEPARTMENT STORE UGH!' is a valid criticism. The entire point of department stores is to have a huge, classy-ish range and, depending on what tier of department store we're talking about, lots of reputable designers either have product lines or showrooms going on. It's like they expect every contestant to be Christian Siriano or Alexander McQueen.

Yeah, although I do think a big part of why the designs were so boring is the designers don't think Marie Claire is a high-fashion magazine and don't respect its customer. Over all the seasons, any time the designers think they're designing for a middle-America customer they churn out lazy crap.

It didn't help that the design brief was muddled. Yes there are retro cycles in fashion and yes there will undoubtedly be some elements of 90s fashion in the 2030s (I'm guessing the shrunken crop-top/giant pants silhouette will come back time and again over the next century as much as I personally hate it), but taking a look from today and figuring out what the retro version of it will be is a lot clearer and could have produced more interesting results. I do look forward to seeing what the next generation's version of this era's fashions are - drapey tops with leggings, macro prints, embellished bodysuits, the whole Anthropologie a-billion-layers-piled-atop-a-twee-little-schoolgirl-skirt thing, and the thing with very square, sheer blouses with no darting and heavy moto jackets will probably all inspire the next generation's "turn of the century" retro.

I would have loved to see the designers work through the thought process of like "okay, what pieces are likely to make it to thrift shops and survive? What's accessible for teenagers to repurpose as streetwear?" But this show actually tries to avoid real fashion design questions as much as possible.

That's true but I also felt this challenge suffered from having too many elements that the designers got confused. A better challenge would have just been to design a modern look based on what the designers wore 20 years ago, or a challenge where they have to make a future look based on where fashion is going. Forcing a 40 year time gap as the 'twist' for this episode didn't really work for me. Also 1994 was in the middle of the grunge era in fashion, so it was annoying hearing the judges complain about how dark and black some peoples vision of the future was. You didn't ask the designers to just design for the future, you asked the to draw inspiration from the past. Huge difference.

Narcissus1916
Apr 29, 2013

Yeah, the 1994 stuff was cute but REALLY seemed to wreck the entire future-themed stuff. Definitely needed a Tim Gunn "What the hell are you all designing?" invention like they've occasionally had to do in seasons past.

Sandhya's work is all over the place, but at least it pop on the runway. A lot of disappointing looks are going to make for a disappointing season.

I fully agree with you. It's almost like the scope was just too broad and left too many openings for a mess on the runway. It's still pretty early on in the competition and I look forward to when it gets down to just 6 or 7 designers. I'm really looking forward to tonight's episode though.

Fäde's whole outfit was really great, and looked a whole lot better than Amanda's dress, which really felt like "more of the same" coming from her. He really shouldn't be underestimated. While he's not ended up in the top so far, his output has been of reliable quality. The insect look from the unconventional materials challenge was probably the worst, but even that was well constructed.

And I'll say it. I thought Sandhya's skirt looked really cool.

I'm genuinely curious... are there large numbers of people who DO agree with the judges? This is one of the most-watched reality shows among people I know and I can't think of a single person who agrees with the judges' decisions often or sees the winners they choose as anything but producer fuckery. Since the producers are so transparently manipulating things to appeal to the audience, who IS that audience?

Everyone had boners over Kini's tailoring but his dress was pulling in 5 different places. It's an interesting dress, but it didn't deserve tailoring accolades. Fade's, while incredibly well-made with a cool silhouette, felt like a junior design project on "working with patterns".

I really didn't love anyone's today (but I'd give the win to Fade probably, even despite my critique). I thought the bottom two who were not eliminated were nowhere near Hernan's; he deserved to go. I think Sean should have found a way to embrace his corduroy, though. It could have been really dramatic.

I liked Emily's dress/pants, but Seth Aaron was one of my favorite designers in the history of the show, so I might be biased.

I disagree. As a dude, Samantha's dress screamed "tuxedo" to me with the shoulder, pocket, and satin stripe accents. She didn't deserve the win, but it was definitely inspired by her suit.

I think the make up really sucks this season. It's really dull and I don't think it is the fault of the designers. Maybe I'm just hating everything about this season...

I'm annoyed by the lack of screen time for the other designers. They spend so much time on Amanda and Sandhya I don't even know who some of the other people are. It seems like the producers are really trying to stir up as much drama as possible this season. Having Sandhya pick the suits for the designers was just so obvious. I don't think they've ever done anything quite like that before.

And this season I don't think they've had a "real" guest judge yet...just a bunch of bloggers?

Anyway, I'll probably watch until the day I die and bitch up until that point. I enjoy watching the designers despite all of the bullshit.

This is completely random but does it bother anyone else as it bothers me when the designers don't match their blacks? I loved Alexander's look but it kinda bothered me that the black tones and textures in his skirt didn't really match the top.

I think that might be partly a problem of the TV lighting. Definitely something I'd like to think I'd learn to compensate for before auditioning for PR, but it's probably really hard to tell in the workroom if two different fabrics are going to look like the same shade of black on the runway.
