John Waters is such a huge cultural touchstone for America and he's very underrated. There was a cross-dresser on Wait Wait Don't Tell me today named Peaches Christ and he mentioned Waters as a big influence. The funny/scary thing to think of is that there are still poo poo tons of people alive today who are the embodiment of the people he has lampooned and mimicked in his films. You can find them up and down the mid-Atlantic in Baltimore (obviously) and throughout every major city west of the Mississippi that is/was a dying working class town. Like, you can walk through some streets in Hampden (a neighborhood in Baltimore) and see people who look like they could be Divine.
