RussiaToday is reporting that some chinese raided the company that made iron dome and got their db schema. I look forward to the day where I can print an iron dome on my 3d printer and protect myself and my car from being poo poo on by birds

quote:

Three Israeli defense contractors responsible for building the “Iron Dome” missile shield currently protecting Israel from a barrage of rocket attacks were compromised by hackers and robbed of huge quantities of sensitive documents pertaining to the shield technology, KrebsOnSecurity has learned.

The never-before publicized intrusions, which occurred between 2011 and 2012, illustrate the continued challenges that defense contractors and other companies face in deterring organized cyber adversaries and preventing the theft of proprietary information.

According to Columbia, Md.-based threat intelligence firm Cyber Engineering Services Inc. (CyberESI), between Oct. 10, 2011 and August 13, 2012, attackers thought to be operating out of China hacked into the corporate networks of three top Israeli defense technology companies, including Elisra Group, Israel Aerospace Industries, and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

By tapping into the secret communications infrastructure set up by the hackers, CyberESI determined that the attackers exfiltrated large amounts of data from the three companies. Most of the information was intellectual property pertaining to Arrow III missiles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), ballistic rockets, and other technical documents in the same fields of study.

Comment Crew is the name of a unit in the People's Liberation Army. The way china phrases their army sounds like these were separatists or something trying to get away from the oppressiveness of the official Chinese government. Instead of changing my perspective on that, I'm going to stick with that premise and this thread is a place where we act like the comment crew is a robin hood of military defense: they take complicated defense systems' plans and sourcecode and give them to the people so that they can protect themselves. It's like the USAs second amendment, but to protect you against helicopters and incoming missiles instead of just a guy on a horse. All the info they need is right there in the code, the people should just read the code comments to learn how to use it.

An iron dome would be a step up as a deterrent from lasering helicopters.

Those iron dome missiles cost like 100 times the homemade rockets they were designed to intercept, and they can't even intercept them.

Personally I'm just surprised nobody has died from Iron Dome shrapnel yet.

Iron Dome isn't lasers

also I bet the costs of operating a laser system would by similarly expensive due to power/complexity of parts

complexity, not so much, but wear and tear on lasers powerful enough to actually zap poo poo would be p. lmao

this happens so often why don't they only allow people to work on computers that can only be networked by a direct ethernet connection and keep them completely off the internet, and in a locked room.

the electricity needed to power the laser is tiny, but the cooling system might be a different story

China is going to be the next USSR, the sneaky plan is allowing them to hack into defense contractors and letting their engineers come over to commit industrial espionage, but make it so they steal the plans to poo poo like teh f-35 and iron dome so they can spend trillions of dollars making bad duplicates of deliberately bad weapons platforms and run otu of money

I hear this a lot as some kind of argument against something (?) but I dont get the point of it. Yeah well... it is ? Lol. Better than not having it at all eh? Perhaps intercepting rockets is difficult?

All those bullets have to come down somewhere. Wonder if there are rules governing where those weapons can shoot.
