SkySteak posted:Sorry if this is meant to be in the Scottish Independence thread but what are the likely political repercussions if the referendum fails? I understand the issue of independence will be slain or at best, kicked upstairs for a while, but will it have any after effect on devolution and Scotland's role in the UK, in general? Westminster will switch focus 100% on the general election and any Scottish issues raised before the referendum will be entirely ignored because Scotland doesn't matter to the GE electoral maths. We've just given a commitment to the UK as-is after all. Up here it might be more interesting; Labour are sure to try and make political points out of the SNP but they are so inept that I'm thinking it'll backfire. twoot fucked around with this message at 00:15 on Aug 4, 2014 |

goddamnedtwisto posted:I dunno, they've got some pretty safe seats and a lot of back-benchers have been quietly distancing themselves from the wreck over the past four year. I wonder if there's a spread market on their results next year? I mean it'll be an obliteration whatever way, but I wouldn't be surprised if 15 or 20 Lib Dems managed to stagger away with their seats. Politicalbetting had a post a few months ago which said the betting market had them at holding 35 seats. But this was before the internal polling scuffle which showed even super safe seats like Danny Alexander's flipping, and Lord Ashcroft has since done polling of Lib/Lab marginals which showed an average 20% swing to Lab. twoot fucked around with this message at 23:31 on Aug 6, 2014 |

Arsenic Lupin posted:Is there any chance that (A) Ed will be dethroned before the next election or (B) Labour will win the next election? Should that "or" be an "and"? The party has a final chance to kick him out at the conference, other than that he'd need to resign.

Praseodymi posted:Why isn't there a true left party? It's not like we don't as a nation have a history of successful socialism, so why is it all we can get is posh fucks and posh fucks pretending to be lefties while sucking up to the original posh fucks. FPTP basically, although there is always the hilarious issue of left-wing unity. Today both parties are chasing the same swing voters in a few dozen seats which can deliver them a majority. A "true left" party would need to have extremely concentrated support in enough seats to give it enough MPs to form coalitions with Labour and pull the narrative to the left. A widely spread left wing party would simply split votes away from Labour, leading to the Tories winning.

The No camp in the audience will be full of Glasgow Labour, which might be okay for them on questions like the Currency, but on anything to do with Privatisation or Labour's incompetence Darling might as well be staring at a room solely of SNP supporters. twoot fucked around with this message at 22:57 on Aug 25, 2014 |

gorki posted:I was watching Channel 4 news earlier and they were interviewing the person on the street () in Clacton about their voting intentions. All the people they showed said they would definitely vote for a UKIP candidate at a by-election but wouldn't be so sure about voting for them at a general election. I'm still pretty new to English politics, and I'm wondering what the reasoning is behind this? Are by-elections just a bit of fun? A by-election rarely holds the balance of power in Westminster, so the common worries about the spoiler effect fall by the wayside. It hasn't happened much in recent years but during the 70s and 80s there were quite a few occasions were Nationalist parties picked up by-elections only to lose them again to Labour or the Liberals at the general. At the general the importance was keeping the Tories out.
