+1 The people's Albo

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/aug/01/welfare-recipients-arent-bludgers-and-they-deserve-respect-from-joe-hockey

quote:

However, we need to abandon the ugly rhetoric and start from the proposition that there are people who aren’t in the workforce through no fault of their own. If we put aside politics for just a moment, most people would accept that our shared values of decency demand that people down on their luck receive support rather than vilification.

Maybe their marriage broke down and they are struggling to raise children alone. Maybe they are sick and genuinely unable to work. Maybe they have a mental illness. Maybe they are homeless. Perhaps they are over 50 years of age and have been made redundant and are unable to find anyone who will give them a shot at a second career.

Whatever their circumstances, people receiving welfare deserve neither disrespect, nor this government’s transparent attempts to punish them for their misfortune, with ever more tests to maintain their payments.

Hundreds of people in my electorate in Sydney’s inner west are on disability pensions because they are literally unable to work. Many sole parents would love to work but their circumstances and their responsibility to raise their children make work difficult. Such people endure a daily struggle to overcome their circumstances and raise their children to become educated so they can escape the poverty trap.

That’s something to be applauded. Instead, the current rhetoric of the government tries to make people feel as though they’re lazy or burdensome. That’s just not fair. It is completely disrespectful. The approach of the current government appears to be punitive, rather than helpful. The very last thing elected representatives should do is encourage working Australians to treat welfare recipients with suspicion or hatred.

Well, this is awkward.

Former Prime Minister Sir John Major has praised immigrants for having the "guts" and "drive" to travel across the world to better themselves.

In an interview for BBC Radio 4's Reflections, to be broadcast tomorrow, he rejects the idea that immigrants always come to Britain to benefit from the

country's welfare system. Instead, he describes immigrants as having "the very Conservative instinct" of wanting to improve their lives and that of their

families.

Talking about growing up in Brixton in the 1950s, he says he saw immigration at "very close quarters" when there was a "different social value" placed on

immigration.

"They shared my house," he says. "They were my neighbours. I played with them as boys. I didn't see people who had come here just to benefit from our social

system. I saw people with guts and the drive to travel halfway across the world in many cases to better themselves and their families."

More Queensland.

quote:

On the night of Saturday, August 10, 2014, an 18-year-old transgender man Oscar Mcgregor was verbally and physically assaulted by three security guards for using the men's bathroom. Oscar received bruises, cuts, and swelling all over his body, and after reaching out for justice The Beat has still not responded or apologized for the incident.

https://www.change.org/petitions/th...justiceforoscar

Here is a written statement by Oscar, posted immediately after the assault on August 10, 2014:

quote:

"On Saturday night I was assaulted by three security guards at The Beat Megaclub for using the toilets of the gender I identify with. After one guard told me I couldn't use the mens bathroom I explained that I'm a transman and he allowed me to use the toilet. Half an hour later the same guard returned with two others and told me I'm not allowed to use the mens toilets and to leave. I explained to them again that I am a transman but then they asked for my ID (which I didn't give them) and said that until my ID says that I am male I cannot use the mens toilets. I told them that that is discrimination and they can't do that. They then asked me if I wanted to be treated as a man and when I said yes they threw me to the ground.

This is blatant transphobia and is disgusting behavior from a place that claims to be inclusive to people of all sexuality's and genders. I'd prefer not to be called a slurs by people employed at a place that is supposed to be a safe space for people like me. I especially don't understand why it was necessary to have three very large men restrain a person who is 50kg and 170cm with excessive force (e.g. knee to my throat, punched me in the face, stood on my leg). Drag queens use the female toilets all the time and no one seems to care.

I am honestly disgusted this kind of behavior came from the beat, now i have a bruised eye, cuts and swelling on the back of my head and cuts and bruises down my shins."

The other great Brisbane relic is the triangular centerpiece at the town hall in the city. The center is the spirit of progress blessing english colonists as they spread out and work the land, while aboriginals are driven into the acute angles (the thin edges).

quote:

Daphne Mayo's tympanum above the King George Square entrance to the Brisbane City Hall

The sculptured pediment above the portico and entrance, known as the tympanum, was carved by noted Brisbane sculptor Daphne Mayo in the early 1930s.[1] There is some controversy surrounding the theme of the tympanum, which depicts the settlement of Queensland.[13] The gown-clad female figure in the centre depicts "progress" or "enlightenment", while settlers with their cattle and explorers with their horses, move out from under her protecting arms to claim the land from the indigenous people and native animals, who are represented by two aboriginal males crouching in the left hand corner, and a fleeing kangaroo. To the right corner one can see a young European male and female, adjoined by a sheep and a row of books and an artist's palette representing the new European nation, agriculture and civilisation. The tympanum measures 16.5 m long with a height of 3 m at its centre.[13] The sculpture was unveiled eight months after the building was officially opened.[7]
