Y'know they wouldn't be so bad if their songs sounded a bit more distinct and they weren't overplayed six feet into the ground

Strong bassline, chord progression open enough to allow for your own funky interpretation of the message, no lovely heart lyrics. I love it! (in comparison to Mumford & Sons which is basically the hitler's child porn collection of the music world)

When you think about it complaining at a band for being overplayed is having a pop at capitalism, youre saying how dare they make money and get played lots because of producing good art, but surely you should celebrate a good band achieving success. Anything less is essentially communism.

it's just the hipster reverence for the pretentious faux-authenticity of working class nostalgia that's finally trickled into the mainstream the past few years

also this is relevant:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as4O2ZorKP8

the portlandia skit about how it's the 1890s again is almost relevant but like every portlandia skit they squander a decent premise with unfunny jokes and run it into the ground

tbh liking pop music is kind of a thing now with music nerds. maybe not the mumfords but liking/loving katy perry, beyonce, lady gaga, etc. is an acceptable opinion among many hipsters

I'm not saying they're bad because they're overplayed, I'm saying it makes hearing them more galling than if I just heard the band in a vacuum or something

The best part about Mumford & Sons is that you can put their songs through a Markov chain generator and the output is indistinguishable from actual Mumford lyrics.

I mean mumford & sons are bland and repetative but it's not like they sound awful when they're in the background. Most top 40 stuff is pretty bland and unimaginative but it's top 40 because it's catchy and easy like the first time you hear it.

Weren't they embarrassed or something when they followed up after Nick Cave at Glastonbury 2013. I think they are aware they are bad, It shows when they do things with real musicians (see that Inside Llewyn Davis documentary)

They are a million times better than Nicholas Cave and I'm sure they know this, probably they were trying to appear humble which is refreshing. Live they are excellent.

tbh i don't pay much attention to maynard's lyrics, they're usually kind of over the top. despite that, he has a good voice for their music and they have done many songs that i'd call good
