DONT WATCH THE MOVIE. Battlefield Earth is amazing. If you did watch the movie, still read it because the tards ended the movie less than 1/4 in to the book.

Actually the sex scenes don't start getting really weird until the sequels.

Carly shook her glass, willing the ice to melt. "You still haven't told me what the mission is."

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

Even as someone who likes Philip K. Dick: Just read the synopsis of his stories and you have the basic idea. The man was a much better conceptualizer than an actual writer. Read Asimov if you actually like words and the reading of words thereof.

Uhh I've only read like 2 of 'em, Snow Crash was pretty cool, had some funny parts to it. It kinda ran out of crazy scifi stuff to describe halfway through the book, but the stuff that was mentioned was interesting to read about.

The other one I read was Ready Player One, it was alright but the only scifi part was mostly that everyone had virtual reality gear and were connected to some Second Life-ish thing. It had lots of references to the 80s and videogames and stuff if that's your thing though.

Cryptonomicon is really good, probably the best thing he's done, although it's not really science fiction. More of an espionage kind of thing.

I'd recommend Charles Stross for a good Contempo science fiction writer, especially Accelerando.

Sure. As far as his sci-fi novels go, I've really only read Snow Crash and (part of) Anathem. Anathem was well written and funny, though learning all the world-specific terms was annoying. It was also pretty loving slow. His best stuff, I think, is The Big U (one of the funniest books I've ever read) and The Baroque Cycle (a trilogy of novels set in the 1600s/early 1700s -- the books are chock-full of historical information if you're into that). Neither of those is sci-fi, though.

I just read through the Jean Le Flambeur books by Hannu Rajaniemi. They were pretty good. Incredibly strange but in a way that emphasizes how bewildering we might find the future.

Seconding Charles Stross. He does a ton of great stuff but I'm particularly fond of the Laundry Files.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

I just remembered the third, probably final sci-fi novel I read, Roadside Picnic. I forget where I heard about it, but apparently it was the basis for those S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. It was pretty interesting, less technological roboty science stuff, and more alien-y stuff that scientists don't understand. Dudes travel around "The Zone" and find alien artifacts that break the laws of physics, so they nab them and sell them to scientists.

He's terrific at writing good prose. The actual content of the prose is eh.

Neuromancer is pretty fun, though it's abstract at points which I could give a poo poo about. It's a "cyber punk" novel, so if you like the style of Blade Runner, you'll probably find it entertaining.
