Obama said this at a DSCC fundraiser tonight:quote:“What’s preventing us from getting things done right now is you’ve got a faction within the Republican Party that thinks solely in terms of their own ideological purposes and solely in terms of how do they hang on to power,” Obama said. “And that’s a problem. And that’s why I need a Democratic Senate. Not to mention the fact that we’re going to have Supreme Court appointments, and there are going to be a whole host of issues that many people here care about that are going to be determined by whether or not Democrats retain the Senate.” The White House quickly rushed to clarify that he was speaking hypothetically, but was he?

I visited my parents this past weekend, and my dad informed me that his doctor thinks he may have very early-stage glaucoma. My state allows medical marijuana for a very short list of ailments, glaucoma being one of them. I ranted for a while about legalizing it (though I never really got into smoking pot myself) and joked with him about applying for a medical marijuana card so he can have an excuse to start smoking the reefer. The next day, I'm out washing my car, and my dad tells me to come take a look at something. I follow him behind the shed and right in front of me is a five foot tall marijuana plant in a medium sized pot. I'm so dumbfounded and blown away I ask him if it somehow grew there by accident. He finally decided to spill the beans about fact that both he and my mom have been smoking pot occasionally for decades and neither me nor my brother ever had a clue. Neither of my parents have ever been in trouble with the law and neither of them fit the lazy stoner stereotype whatsoever. To me they're exhibit A and B as to why pot is completely loving harmless and should be legalized posthaste.

In my 16 years o'schoolin', I've only had two teachers openly identify their political ideology to the class. One was my teacher for my one semester of high school economics at a suburban Texas school, the other was a senior-year Business Law professor. Surprise! They were both libertarians. first day of Business Law, the frumpy, middle-aged professor shuffles into class and calls out in a giant booming voice: "WHO'S SICK OF THIS STUPID loving WAR??" and went for scoring points with the students before he talked about letting poor people die the next week

Poor Kansan kids. In Illinois, its only evolution in public schools, none of that 'teach the controversy' poo poo. Federal funds are on the line, so there's no tolerance for unscientific bullshit. If I recall correctly, my HS required 1 semester of Macro econ and had an optional AP micro. Macro was the basics of the basics, and we still came out knowing progressive taxation, credit and debits, and checkbooks. Nice thing about HS in Illinois was that the state paid for junior college tuition while you were enrolled. In exchange, you got to leave school early/after the minimum hours necessary for the school to receive payment for your attendance.

Mercifully, she left the second she cranked out a kid. I went to a public school in the Bay Area and still managed to land a creationist biology teacher freshman year. His greatest hits included setting the classroom thermostat to ~64 in the summer and then calling any women who complained about the temperature a slut or a whore for wearing immodest clothing, showing B.C. cartoons about how monkeys can't be descended from people during the evolution unit, and keeping a Bible in plain view on his desk at all times. He also insisted on grading everything on a curve, and would publicly announce who got the highest grades in the class, encouraging people who did poorly to "blame them" for their low grades. Finally, at one point, a girl in our class stood up and told him his teaching was garbage and that he had to follow the district. He started crying and kicked us all out of class ~20 min before the end of the period. Her parents went to the school board, they had a huge hearing, and the year after that all science teachers were forced to adhere to an incredibly strict (and bad) curriculum with no deviation allowed. He sticks out in my mind because for almost my entire childhood, I said I wanted to be a scientist, and he's the single individual that killed that impulse for me. Garbage teacher, garbage human, and he had no business being anywhere near children. gently caress you, Gary Latch!

Out of my 2 HS science teachers, one (earth science) was a former researcher at JPL and the other (biology) was a semi-retired doctor who always rode his harley to school. I remember someone jokingly bringing up creationism in biology and the teacher stopped for a second and announced that that creationism was idiocy of the highest order and if anyone or their parents have a problem with that they needed to be a licensed MD with over 30 years of residency or could "shut the hell up."
