Go with the safe degree. Circling back though... I'm not sure how it is in the UK, but the market here in the states for Java is pretty drat good. Did you participate in any internships or anything while at school? Do you have examples of code you've written? Java is an in demand skill set, there is something else up if you haven't been able to find work for an entire year.
