And he makes it move in a way you wouldn't believe possible, with much more complex controls.

Well put it like this, using the pre-programmed motion data, you could fight in a Gespenst, being skillful enough without the data and moving it yourself, you could make a Gespenst breakdance

The fact that a certain character hasn't done this yet is a goddamn travesty.

No, the other certain character who could do that.

Also, one of the reasons Lions are so useful is because they're based on planes, so flying them isn't nearly as hard. It's not something just anyone can do, but it doesn't require either a team of super special pilots or a bunch of brainwashed child soldiers to make data so that normal Joes can fight. That was one of the DC's big advantages against the EFA, and now the EFA is going to be using it against the Aerogators. (or they would, if our spcial snowflakes weren't going to do everything because this is a video game)

This whole thing about motion data explains why the Aggressor are so awesome. On one hand, when a mook pilots a mecha they're probably using Aggressor data, so they can recognize and counter it easily. On the other, Aggressors' mechs probably have a lot of specialized preprogrammed motions that are generally not that useful but really good in overly specific situations.
If all else fails they can always break out the DDR pad and school their opponents that way.

Ingram's having himself some sleepy time.

And then this rear end in a top hat shows up.

Ingram: "Who are you?"
???: "Release... shackles..."
Ingram: "What?"

???: "If you do not... shackles of Gozzo... you, too, will..."
Ingram: "....."

???: "I cannot yet... go there... necessary factors are not in place... So... must leave this task to them... meet in that world... my..."

Ingram: "...! What was that? I can't... remember."

Atad: "Aleph."
Ingram: "Haven't I told you about using that name?"
Atad: "You have. But you are Balshem... a mere doll. I am a pure Balmarian. Do not forget that."
Ingram: "Hah... What do you want?"

Atad: "You lost your sample. Or should I say, returned it. Why did you give it up so easily?"
Ingram: "I didn't. That was to aid the growth of the Class Gibol candidates."
Atad: "Hmph. You're hardly in a position to be feigning confidence in your failures."
Ingram: "...I'll keep that in mind."

:eng101:Well, this scene is new. The mystery man from Ingram's little dream sequence is Cobray Gordon, one of the playable characters from SRW Alpha 3, which came out a couple years after OG1 originally did. Cobray has an unusual connection to Ingram, but of course we can't go into it because spoilers.

Kusuha: "Bullet..."
Bullet: "You're awake!?"
Kusuha: "In Beijing... the Aerogaters captured me, and then..."

Kusuha: "I... I can't remember."
Bullet: "Don't force yourself. It's all right. You're safe now."
Kusuha: "But... something happened... didn't it? I did something..."

Bullet: "No, nothing. There's nothing to worry about, everything's fine."
Kusuha: "You're not a very good liar, Bullet."
Bullet: "Ugh..."
Kusuha: "I caused you all so much trouble. I'm so sorry..."
Bullet: "Kusuha..."

Kusuha: "But thank you, Bullet."
Bullet: "Th... for what?"
Kusuha: "You're the one who saved me, weren't you?"
Bullet: "Huh!? N-no, that's, well... I mean, everybody else was backing me up."
Kusuha: "But I remember your voice the most, I'm sure of it."
Bullet: "Kusuha..."

Word comes down to the pilots about the upcoming excursion to Antarctica to check out the suspicious activity at Coursland Base. Masaki isn't looking forward to returning, given that that's where he encountered the Granzon for the first time after coming to the surface. Kuro isn't looking forward to returning, given that it's going to be freezing.

Excellen: "Well, love can keep you steaming hot no matter how cold it gets. Isn't that right, Lune?"
Lune: "And who might you be talking about? Those two in the infirmary, maybe?"
Excellen: "Ooh, nice counter."
Lune: "You keep teasing me about the same things, of course I got used to it."

Masaki: "Uh, what are you two talking about?"
Lune: "Bullet and Kusuha. Radha said she won't have to worry about catching cold with them around."
Masaki: "Catch cold? What's that supposed to mean?"

Lune: "...You don't get it."
Masaki: "N-no..."

Katina: (That's pretty bad. Even I got that.)

Aya apologizes to Rai for coming to his room, but she needs to speak to him in confidence about something, or else she'll continue to hold the team back: her reason for joining the military, and how that reason has come back to haunt the team.

She never really wanted to join the military, but she believed working with the T-LINK System would offer a way to connect with her dead mother and sister - both of whom had the same ability, and both of whom were subjects at her father's institute. According to Professor Kobayashi, every human being has this latent power, but it only seems to "awaken" in certain individuals. Aya adds that Ryusei's mother was also a subject and likely had the same ability, surprising Rai. Yukiko Date's powers faded shortly before she gave birth to Ryusei, and the Institute no longer had any need for her. Aya is sure that Ryusei learned all of this during the inquiry, and now she has no idea what to say to him.

Rai responds that Ryusei isn't a kid, and probably knows what Aya wants to say already. Hearing this, Aya has to laugh at herself; she really was treating him like a kid this entire time, being too wrapped up in her own past to consider otherwise. Rai advises her not to worry. They all have painful things in their past, and nobody's going to hold that against her.

Rai: "So keep your head up. If stay focused on the past, you'll never move forward. Even if nothing changes, at least you know you took that first step. ...That's what I think after meeting Kyosuke, and Masaki, and everybody else on the Hagane, anyway."
Aya: (That first step, huh...)
Aya: "All right, Rai, I'll give it a go. As the SRX team's leader... I'll fight at everyone's side. Besides, if I don't, I'll never hear the end of it from Lune and Excellen."
Rai: "Captain..."
Aya: "Well then... let's go, Rai."
Rai: "Yes, ma'am."

The Hiryu is approaching the polar region. Sean says he doesn't like cold places very much. Eun dares to suggest that it's because he has poor circulation, but no, of course it's because all the women go around bundled up.

As for the actual situation, a Ladybird transport with F-32 escort has been detected en route to Coursland, but there's no corresponding Federation flight plan. Sean raises the possibility of still more stragglers from the Divine Crusaders, but given their choice of location, Lefina suspects that it's the remaining members of the EOT Council. Still, they had best confirm for themselves - what does the council hope to gain by making contact with the Aerogaters? What are they planning this time?

Mission 35: The Ark from the Frozen Lands

:frogon:
Renji Isurugi assures Karl that the Shirogane's repairs are complete; the ship is ready to sail at any time. Karl has his reservations, though. Isurugi Heavy Industries was a regular thorn in the EOT Council's side, producing the Lion series for Bian Zoldark, and yet after Bian's death Renji was quick to go crawling to Karl's feet. How can he trust such a man? Renji simply responds that a company can always be trusted to pursue a profit; it's those with high-minded principles, like Mao Industries, that can't be counted on to do what you want.

Despite appearing in one mission, Renji has two expressions while Karl only has one. That's okay, though. I can take care of the rest. :frogbon:

Karl grudgingly acknowledges Isurugi's success in rebuilding the base after its earlier destruction. Renji accepts the praise, but what about that other matter? Karl assures him that yes, he will be given a place aboard the Shirogane. Renji looks forward to seeing the White Star with his own eyes - and meeting his future business partners.

But now it's Renji's turn to have doubts, and Karl can already guess the cause: Nibhal Mubhal. Renji questions whether he's actually going to bring them to the White Star as promised; Karl sees little choice in the matter, as they'll have to speak to the Aerogaters' leaders directly if there's to be any hope of a peaceful resolution. Renji, however, is afraid that Nibhal just wants them vulnerable so that the Aerogaters can attack them.

Nibhal: "...That's rather rude, wouldn't you say?"
Renji: "...!"
Nibhal: "After the service I've offered you, is this any way to treat a guest of the state?"
Renji: "You've just been toadying this whole time!"
Nibhal: "I could say the same of you."
Renji: "Now you wait just a drat minute---!"
Karl: "Enough of this pointless bickering. In a moment, we'll be---"

They're interrupted by the alarm and reports of a heat source from beneath the ice. A moment later the Kurogane bursts through and into the open air (with Renji furious that they're being so reckless with an expensive Space Noah ship.)

Elzam hails the Shirogane, saying that he's looking for Karl Schtleseman. After confirming that Karl is on the ship, he asks what they're planning to do with the Shirogane. Renji angrily tries to tell him off, but Karl cuts him off at once and gives a straight answer: they're departing the Earth, not to forsake humanity, but to carry out direct negotiations with the Aerogaters. This is too important to be left to a man like Elzam, who only knows how to fight; a politician must see this done properly.

Elzam: "Don't you realize that these dealings behind the scenes will just put the Earth in greater danger?"
Karl: "That's the nature of politics. You served under Bian and Maier, who believed brute force was the solution to everything. I don't expect you to understand."
Elzam: "You deceive the people to preserve your own status, selling out your mother world... I have no desire to understand!"

Karl: "Then, what? Will you destroy the Shirogane?" :frogc00l:
Elzam: "....."

The alarm sounds again, and one of Elzam's men reports Aerogater units warping in all around. Renji demands to know the meaning of this, and Nibhal reminds him of what he said before - his people are not a unified nation. Not to worry, however; the Kurogane is on hand to protect them. Ignoring them both, Karl orders the Shirogane to make ready for departure.

Elzam prepares to sortie in the Trombe Mk. II; his men can't believe he's going to defend these cowards, but he needs answers, and Schtleseman has them. He then orders the Kurogane to leave them - he wants to see this machine of Mao Industries' firsthand, after the reports he had of it during the DC war. Reluctantly, his men comply.

It's got to be frustrating, serving under Elzam. Hopefully his cooking is worth it.

Anyway, after all that, here's our objectives. Protect the Shirogane, and wipe out the enemies; no battle mastery yet.

We're back at the map from Ryusei 5, with a few more enemies than last time. Hopefully Shu won't show up and kill everyone this time around.

On our side we have the Kurogane, captained by generic Last Battalion captain, and Elzam, in...

Remember back in Kyosuke 16 when we'd just taken Columna Space Station from Siebel, and he was trying to retake it and sent a Huckebein Mk. II after us, figuring we'd try to retrieve it and get robot cancer from it? And then we blew it up instead and Siebel got bawled out by Julia, but she said that she'd recovered the Huckebein's wreckage because Elzam wanted it?

No?

That's okay, I'd forgotten it too. But Elzam didn't, and apparently he reassembled that other Huckebein, painted it black, and named it Trombe. So we have Elzam in the Huckebein Trombe.

The new paint job hasn't given it any new attacks, but that doesn't matter to me right now because it's time for fun with event triggers. Ordinarily I could have Elzam sit and fight it out with the Aerogater grunts himself, which would move things along...

...Or I can just attack the Huleh once, which will also prompt the next event.

Having had a glimpse of the Aerogaters' capabilities, Elzam thinks that he'll be at a disadvantage should more arrive. And lo, they do! :ohdear:

Followed shortly thereafter by Sanger, who does what he does best.

Neither had expected to see the other here, but there's no time for pleasantries; they have a mission to fulfill. It's been a while since they last fought side by side.

And now it's just Elzam and Sanger versus the enemies. Once again, I could blow up a bunch of grunts to prompt the next event.

Or Sanger can cast Drive for +30 morale, then Valor, and then smite the gently caress out of the Huleh again.

Works for me. The way this actually works is that attacking the Huleh once will cause Sanger to arrive, and bringing it below 90% health will cause your crew to arrive. If I'd had Elzam use Valor with his first attack it would've put the Huleh just below 90 and our reinforcements would arrive immediately after Sanger did. Doing it this way, I get to knock the Huleh down a lot farther for free.

The Hiryu arrives on the scene, and there's the usual surprise at running into Sanger and Elzam here. Friendly reinforcements means that Elzam's job is done, and the two of them make ready to withdraw (with a promise to Gilliam that they'll talk more at another time, when they're fighting together again).

Sanger: "Kyosuke, Bullet. Don't forget your discipline."
Kyosuke: "Got it."
Bullet: "I-I won't!"

Excellen: "W-wait a minute, Boss! No words of wisdom for me!?"
Sanger: "Heh... talking to you is too exhausting."
Excellen: "Aww..."

The two make their exit, with both Rai and Leona frustrated by Elzam's quick departure. Seeing Leona's reaction, Tasuku is silent. Seeing Tasuku's reaction, Rio realizes that the "rival" he mentioned earlier wasn't Rai after all...

Karl immediately contacts the Hiryu and orders its crew to defend the Shirogane. Sean has a few words for Karl about the real reason for his "negotiations" with the aliens, but the chairman isn't rising to the bait, as he has no reason to answer to mere soldiers who should be carrying out their orders in silence. After a moment, Lefina echoes Karl's order; the Aerogaters are the enemy, and fighting them should be the priority. Sean accedes, saying that it's probably best if soldiers don't get involved in politics.

Rai starts to remind Ryusei not to attempt the OOC maneuver again, but Ryusei's already resigned himself to fighting without SRX.

"...Looks like all the players are assembled. Time to carry out my own mission."

And then a crapton of additional enemies pop up.

We get to see the battle mastery requirement: clear the field within five turns. This is also part of the reason I rushed things along by having Sanger and Elzam go for the Huleh directly; since they aren't sticking around on Ryusei's route, I'm saving the kills for my own guys.

Of course we're a mile away from the enemy, so we spend the first turn or two just moving forward.

There's actually very little to say about this mission. We've sort of hit another threshold where most of us are strong enough to just wade through the enemy with no real risk of dying; people can either dodge well enough (SRX team, Masaki, Lune, Latooni, Excellen) or take hits well enough (Kyosuke, Irm, Kusuha) that "rush forward, kill everything" is all the strategy that we need.

Mishleis still dodge pretty well, but Masaki uses a Striked, Valored Cyflash to eliminate them all at once.

Many of the enemies then kill themselves with our counterattacks during the enemy phase.

By Turn 3 we're over by the Huleh. We also get our first taste of the Ezekiel as a grunt unit instead of a boss. The generic Ezekiel is much less impressive than the custom models that Atad and Gaza have been using. They have 14000 health, which is more than any other Aerogater unit...

...but when Irm and Kyosuke got over here without spending a single SP, and thus have plenty left to cast Valor, it doesn't mean much.

Though I think this is the first instance of a mismatched twin unit in the game. Usually they have you fighting two of the same enemy, but here we have an Ezekiel and a Zechariah. Excitement and variety!

Latooni nukes the last Ezekiel/Zechariah pair to death.

It's a bit harder to level up with the Hiryu than the Hagane, given that it can't fire any decent weapons after moving and it's pretty slow. Almost makes you want to do something weird like invest a bunch of PP buying Infight levels. Lefina's close to 36 at the end of this mission, and she needs to be 37 in another mission or two.

By the beginning of Turn 4 only the Huleh is left, so Excellen and Gilliam twin up and go for the throat.

:toot:

This mission was a breather before the big endgame push, as you can see. When you're actually playing the game it's a welcome change of pace, though it doesn't make for exciting updates.

Renji lets out a sigh of relief as the enemy ship falls. Surely now they will survive, though who knows what this may mean for their negotiations.

But Viletta emerges from the Huleh's wreckage. She got careless, but isn't letting the Shirogane get away so easily...

Then she zooms over to the Shirogane. :frogsiren:

Renji: "Th-this isn't supposed to happen, Nibhal!!!"
Renji: "...!? C-Chairman! He's gone!"
Karl: "What? What is the meaning of this, Nibhal...!"

Viletta: "You've cast the Earth sphere into chaos. Atone with your lives!"

Renji: "W-Why!? Why is this happening!?"
Karl: "drat you, Nibhal! You won't get away with---"

:froggonk:

Viletta: "This act is finished. Until next time, Hagane, Hiryu Kai..."

Nibhal: "Honestly, now. This is just like the last Antarctic conference. I hadn't expected them to show themselves, and now all our hard work has gone to waste. This won't do at all... I'll have to make a report when I return home. For the time being we'll simply have to watch what the vagrants do. Watch, and wait."

The captains review the damage to the Shirogane. As it happens, the attack destroyed the primary bridge with pinpoint accuracy, leaving the ship's other blocks virtually untouched. Suspicious, given that only the Karl Schtleseman and the EOT Council members were killed.

Now once again we're left with questions: why would the Aerogaters do this after negotiations were underway? Was it a ruse to lure the Earth's leaders out and assassinate them? There should have been easier means of accomplishing that. Is it a show of force, like when they destroyed Geneva? It's a bit late in the game for that sort of theater...

Sean has another theory: with the EOT Council eliminated, their political manipulations are at an end. In the long run, this may prove more beneficial to the Earth than not, and a restriction to humanity's "growth" may have been removed. Given what they've been able to glean of Levi Tolar's motives, it makes a certain sense.

A transmission comes in from the Far East Base. The entire situation in Antarctica leaves a bad taste in Daitetsu's mouth, but there's no time; Laker needs the Hagane, Shirogane, and Hiryu Kai back in Japan immediately. The final preparations for Operation SRW are nearly complete.

Viletta reports her success in "purging the old blood" to Levi. As they expected, the Earthlings are preparing for an assault on Neviim, with the Class Gibol candidates at the operation's core. They can expect the final campaign to begin imminently.

This leads to the same conversation from Kyosuke 33 about the Judecca, followed by Viletta's discovery that something isn't right with Ingram.

There's also the Nibhal factor. He could have easily been there when Bian reported his findings, and then manipulated Karl into selling out the Earth.

Still, the blame lands on Karl for doing everything to make sure his methods win the day instead of, you know, the people who actually did the heavy lifting getting the credit.

None. The Shirogane has no personal gimmick. The Space Noah class' overall gimmick is the interchangeable bow module system. The Shirogane is the default configuration for the ship line, Hagane's Tronium Buster Cannon is a ranged offensive option, while the Kurogane's Titanic Drill is both a melee (technically) offensive option and gives the added bonus of underground passage to the ship.

The problem is that the Shirogane gets the short end of the stick because nobody chooses to mount one of the bow modules onto it and let it be as cool as its sister ships. Couple that with the ship's bad luck over the games, and the Shirogane is probably the most screwed over ship in OG that's not one of the generic mook ships (the Peregrine and Albatross classes).

So can you swap commanders between carriers the way you can swap pilots between suits? Or are they locked in?

Ship captains are locked to their ships. They only change when the story dictates they do. (for instance, Elzam giving up his captain's seat to go Trombe around)

J is the only game to do captain-swapping.

Except it was just who was in the lead pilot position for the Archangel and Nadesico, making the implementation practically worthless.

Well, there were upsides and downsides to both. Yurika had higher base stats, command bonuses, and better relationship bonuses, while Ruri had IFS which skyrockets your stats accordingly with your Will, for example. But yeah, it was a load of wasted potential overall.

You're stuck with the captain/ship combinations that you have.

One (basic) thing that I haven't really been showing is that you do pick which carrier you use on each mission, but since I need to level the captains up for secrets there hasn't really been a choice for a while.

That's kind of been a normal thing in SRW lately, mostly because in some you just have an assload of battleships: SEED Destiny's been around forever so there's some combination of the Archangel, Minerva, and Eternal if not all three, then there's been the Dragon's Hive and Macross Quarter a lot in those very same games, and then other shows bring their own in - the one I was most surprised at was how UX has one from Tobikage of all shows. And since it'd probably be kind of obnoxious for a third of your total units fielded to mandatory be game over if shot down they usually just have you using four at max.

...but like here there's four battleships, total, ever aligned with you across multiple games and two of them don't really stick around ever so, don't know why there's the picking for that.

I wonder if we'll get to use the Air Christmas next time around. I kind of like that one even if it has to be Lee behind the helm.

Don't like it? well...

Z1 is pretty hilarious for all the Battleships they throw at you.

By my count Z had 10 battleships, Z2.2 had 7 and Z3.2 had 8.

They kick it up to two for OG2 and just take out the deployment completely. I suspect it's a holdover from Alpha Gaiden, even in Alpha 2 they only let you deploy one battleship at a time (until the final stage, where they all force-deploy at once. @2 also lets you take literally your entire force into the final battle, it's pretty great), and that has four battleships. ...only two of which are worth using, but still. Then after OG2 they just increase the number of slots you get, I'm pretty sure Alpha 3 lets you deploy at least two, maybe three. Then in W I swear the Eternal was just another deployable unit, taking out that problem entirely.

The Eternal was indeed a deployable in W, just like the other Maryus were in K and J.

I'm just glad they quietly abandoned the early idea of the ship you deploy determining how many units you could field in a stage, which was terrible, especially in F Final.
Hey, the Solo Ship looks like a cool yellow squatty frog and has some neat attacks? Too bad, you can only deply 6 units with it, sucker.

...they really did that? lolol

Like I agree that battleships should have a capacity of some kind just because stuff like, the Daitarn 3 getting into a fistfight with the Iron Gear and then in that very stage it can turn around and go inside the ship it just stood taller than, that's silly.

...of course I can only say this because in the thing I'm conceptualizing where that is a matter, there's the Excelion, Celestial Being, Sidonia, and Macross which might as well have infinite capacity as big motherships so

The Exelion probably could hit a capacity cap once you get enough classic supers inside it. The Eltreum basically won't fill up. Also, the Cathedral Terra is missing from that list.
