I ran a new list tonight, went 3-1 (losing game 1 by 2 points to a 7 TIE swarm flown by one of the X-wing game devs) at the FFG Game Center. Took 3rd out of 26. It's a pretty unusual list, but took on both Phantoms and Falcons very well.

Cracken w/ Cluster missiles, squad leader, munitions failsafe (failsafe is optional, could just make a 99pt initiative bid)
Blount with Deadeye and Ion Pulse missiles
Tala with Cluster missiles
2x Tala with Homing missiles. Can swap in 2x Assaults if you think you'll see a lot of swarms.

Thinking of running it at another local tournament Saturday. Has anyone else tried anything similar?

Highlight of the day was using the auto-hit Ion Pulse to dispose of an unharmed Han Solo by flying it off the board. Also using it to lock down Echo for a 3 missile all-you-can-eat buffet.

R7-T1 (3)
Expose (4)
Experimental Interface (3)

(5) Biggs Darklighter (25)
R2-D2 (4)

Total points: 99

The idea here being that Biggs Draws fire, Wedge uses R7 and Expose to get 4 dice at range 2-3 with a TL, and 5 dice at range 1 (optional boost to close) while still getting his ability, and Wes strips the focus and evade off of enemy ships before Wedge blasts the ever loving poo poo out of them. Launch the flechette at something you want to be able to predict better next turn, and let Wedge burn that poo poo up.

Both Wes and Wedge will shoot before and/or simultaneously with Whisper+VI, and Wedge could be shooting 5 dice at 3 defense dice even cloaked.

I have a hard time seeing how Expose will be better than Opportunist in this situation. Both will leave you with a stress, but Opportunist won't lower Wedge's agility.

Yeah, in three different local events. Had a winning record in them all but it definitely struggles against anything with two super maneuverable threats, or a really well flown Phantom. Only lost to Soontir/Whisper/yorr twice, Soontir/Carnor/turr, and another Soontir/Whisper list. I can nuke one Phantom or interceptor, but if they still have a strong closer left it gets ugly. Well, I have a new favorite squad! Keyan and Corran, just 2 ships. I played a game with a prototype of this list earlier in the week and it was great, so I brought it to our Sector Championship this weekend. Each local store is holding a Sector, the sector # being the last 3 digits of the zip code. Then just before world's we'll hold a Quadrant Championship at the FFG Game Center. All the Sector champs get a bye in the first round. This one had 14 players, we've had as many as 30 I think so far. Each event has a unique participation prize from Applied Perspective as well (awesome acrylics a local guy does, http://www.appliedperspective.com/acrylic/product-category/x-wing/)

Keyan Farlander w/ Push the Limit, Engine Upgrade, Advanced Sensors, Advanced Proton Torpedos and Heavy Laser Cannon
Corran Horn with Veteran Instincts, Flechette Torpedos, Fire Control System, Engine Upgrade, and R2-D2.

Went 3-0 in swiss, won both top 4 and final table games. Only list Keyan in 3 games, never lost Corran. Final table I lost Keyan to a PS9 Kath and PS9 Whispers attacks, that landed a blinded pilot crit (3rd one he took today), then Dark Curse finished him off, without him firing a shot...

Horn proceeded to wreak bloody vengeance on the entire enemy squad, regenerating his shields as needed, before it finally came down to Dark Curse vs. him. Only a matter of time until Curse failed a roll then, with me regening and evading every turn.

It's a REALLY fun list to fly, although I only fired the Flechettes once, and the APT never. It was there for Falcon insurance, but I didn't end up facing the 3 Falcon lists. The Flechette is to stress a Phantom before it can fire and recloak, then let Keyand and Corran's doubletap take it out. Only used it the last game. The other Phantom I played I forced onto a rock where the HLC had it's number.

Also played Wedge/Luke/Biggs, a really creative Hobbie/Garven/Biggs/Blount list and Etan/Biggs/Tala/Tala. Nobody around here is running 4B since they're easy lunch for well flown Phantoms. If you expect to see a lot of Soontir/high PS interceptors and the like, I'd put VI on Keyan too, and go for the initiative bid to make them move first, than use AdvSensors and Engine/barrel roll to arc dodge them. I plan to test a build like that as well as swapping in a Bandit or Tala for the HLC and APT.

Went 1-2 at a tournament this weekend, and had a blast doing it, but I do now have some... weirder questions about X-Wing Miniatures tournaments. Specifically, how scoring and pairings and winners are selected. See, in our 8-person tournament, we had one player who went 3-0... but he was not awarded 1st place, because he had destroyed fewer points than two other players. The undefeated player actually didn't get any awards, which feels... wrong somehow. The pairing system was similarly confusing, as I was paired up against much better players than I probably should have been, simply because I had been blowing up a lot of ships in my game while getting blown up a bit faster in return.

Is this standard in X-Wing Tournaments? And how are scenarios handled in tournaments, if they're handled at all? Is it common for rounds to be timed differently from round to round? Sorry, I'm just missing some of the nuance here.

That is not normal at all. Normally you get 5pts for a full win, 3 for a modified win, and 0 for a loss. The 3-0 player, assuming he had all full wins would have 15pts, and any 2-1s 10. So he'd get first with 15, and among the various 10s, rank would be determined by Margin of Victory, which is explained in the tournament rules here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/support/faq/X-Wing-Tournament-Rules.pdf

All the rules are there, if they aren't going by that I have no clue what they are doing, and it sounds like they don't either.

Yeah, the next iteration I'll try drops the APT and HLC to put in a Tala. The Flechette stays since that fired at a Phantom at PS10 means no cloaky for them, and Keyan and Corran's doubletap can swat it.

I generally make a pretty tight cloud of asteroids, since I'm pretty good at flying through them and with all the movement options they'll restrict me less than my opponent. I Then ran Corran down the board edge as fast as possible, while Keyan was a little inside him. If they are angling to get to Keyan before Corran can flank, I'll barrel roll and boost away from them to stretch it out a little and drag them into Corran. Keyan is ALWAYS the first target, but Corran is such a good closer that's ok. Favorite moves on Keyan are the boost then K-turn, and the barrel roll, boost, then hard 2. So much fun to fly!

Edit: I also plan to fly Keyan with VI at some point, and rely on red maneuvers to get the stress. That'll make him even more dangerous to Phantoms/Interceptors/Wedge.

I had a rough day yesterday, 2-4. Ran Fel with PTL, Mauler with VI, and three Blacks with Predator. I haven't really been able to settle on a squad I'm happy with in wave 4-4.5. The theme of the day for me was hot attack dice, cold evades, which is not ideal when running TIEs.

Lost to Mr. Froggies of TC/VASSAL fame round one. He was running 3 Blues with Tacticians and a Y with ion and R3-A2. Had no idea how to go up against all that stress! Came down to Fel vs. an almost dead B and the unhurt Y, and the B got a lucky direct hit through.

2nd round played a female player running 2x Bounty Hunters and a Delta with ion. I killed a Bounty first round of shooting before it even fired, and it was all cleanup from there. First win.

3rd played the UK national champ, running a 7 TIE swarm. He flew it drat well, and it eventually came down to Fel and a Black vs injured Howl, injured Dark Curse, and a black before he took me out.

4th played one of the WI guys running 3 blues with Advanced Sensors and 2 Bandits. So much HP to chew through.

5th was up against Triple Bounty hunters by a guy out of Omaha. He flew them well, and I don't feel like I made any big mistakes but there were a lot of double evade rolls by those bounty hunters!

6th faced a guy from Ohio with a neat squad. Blue with HLC, Jake Farrell with VI and PTL and Chardaan, and Keyan with Advanced Sensors, VI, and HLC. I traded most of my TIEs for the Blue and some damage on the other two, then Fel hunted down Jake and Keyan. I gave him initiative so I could arc dodge, and it made all the difference.

Even though I fell flat it was still a good day, and the Vader promo cards we got already netted me a couple hundred bucks, so that goes a long way to soothing the pain!

I've got to work today but I'll be playing in the consolation event Saturday. Running something else...

Recon Specialist (3)
Blaster Turret (4)

Garven Dreis (X-Wing) (26)

Biggs Darklighter (X-Wing) (25)
R2-D2 (4)

Tala Squadron Pilot (Z-95) (13)

The list comes out to 99 points in total... Honestly, I really enjoy the "focus farm" effect that Moldy Crow + Recce --> Garvin --> Biggs has. It feels really fluffy and fun. The Tala just kind of hangs out on his own, usually as a flanker, and I've always kept him in my lists ever since he finished off a pair of PS1 defenders in one of my games.

I have serious doubts about winning games in my store tournament, though... Maybe as a newer player I should stick with a more forgiving rebel 5 ship netlist (2x Blue with Adv. sensors, 2x Bandit, Biggs)?

It's not bad, although I'd probably drop R2-D2 off Biggs and upgrade the Tala to a Prototype with Chardaan refit and put an R2 unit on Garven or something. I like to avoid spending any extra points on Biggs since he's going to be the first to die anyways. That 4 points is often going to give you 1 or zero shields back, since usually Biggs is dead first or second turn of firing.

The list in general is going to suffer against strong arc dodgers, Soontir, Echo/Whisper, PTL/Engine Keyan Farlander, etc. It's not a bad list though.

In Armada, the Victory Star Destroyer is already kinda big and pricy... I wonder how big an Imperial Class is going to be. And then the Executor would be table-sized. Hopefully they do add Imperial-class Destroyers, Mon Cal Crusiers and an (out of scale) Executor because the Star Wars capital ship game would be kinda disappointing without its most iconic capital ships.

It's not even the physical scale that's the problem with something like a an ISD in X-Wing. It's the scale of the firepower involved too! Armada has a much more abstract approach to scale, so an ISD or even bigger stuff is definitely more likely.

The free action of EH still takes your regular action to activate. That's why the card says, Action: XXXXXXX. You do the EH ACTION, which as part of it lets you do a free barrel roll. If you put Push the Limit on it you can roll and then push the limit to boost, and end up with a stress. EH on an interceptor wouldn't be very useful since they can roll already.
