The Warp being what it was, ships shifting backwards and forwards through time, some said it was a difference of years, or the second came before the first, or whatever. The Navigators claimed to know the taste of the difference, although no one else could say for sure. If one flicker was momentous, a second flicker nearly brought the Imperium to its knees. One flicker could be a test of faith, a curse on the unworthy. A second flicker meant something was going wrong. Riots broke out on half a million worlds, governors hung from lampposts, and trillions of people were shot by lasguns or brought down under the weight of bricks. The Imperial Fleet, the vast majority of it, was in the Warp when it happened. Many fleets heaved to, went back to real space, hoped to wait out … whatever it was. Some were unable to do so, being too near a planet or a star, and were forced to float through the Warp without guidance. As long as recyclers and Gellar fields worked, these ‘ghost fleets’, as they came to be known, might wander the Warp for years, decades. For nearly a millennium, forward and back, fleets would come out of the Warp, adrift in time. Many ships couldn’t wait that long. Food failed, water failed, the Gellar fields failed. Each ship was a city, a complex and fickle thing, and small errors could accumulate. Millions of ships, already suffering the wear and tear of a sudden launch order, were unable to handle the stress, and were lost to the Warp. Even before their arrival at Golgotha, the Imperial Navy had suffered the most grievous losses since the Horus Heresy. - You crawled out of the mess of pipes, looked at Athena. “Did anything happen?” She shrugged. “It’s a big machine, it will probably take a few months to see anything.” “I suppose. I guess … head back to the Primarch? Ready the ship for Golgotha?” She shrugged again. “Sure. I’ve seen what I needed to.”
