All he wants is a hug
Preparations

Travis felt the little knot of emotions coming down the hall. The link was still alive and well, siphoning away the pain and fear of an unending future of pain, corruption, death and in one single, slim, impossible chance, victory. It did not take a precog to guess that there wasn't a future where they returned alive. Should he take the sword. The odds said it killed him more than he killed with it, but the death was quick so on to the magnetic holster it went. His mind drifted towards the little creature that saved his life. Travis wondered how she fared against the little deamon he put in her path. Her soul was certainly black enough to cause most human animal's to cringe in fear. There are worse things than being an untrained precog or an emotionless pit.

She was persistent. The not so thinly veiled threat of remushification was real and Terra was wearing thin. The opulence and comfort reeked of weakness and corruption. Schedules and decorum and pretending to feel anything. No there was purpose behind this death. Little Addie was skilled but this task required more than just skill and luck. Knoxie was in constant torment without the filter but his sight of the future was invaluable to make this more than a pointless death. It would require the three of them to make some sort of impact. He had already died once. It did feel good when he took all those cultists with him and he made it out in the end. Why not up the ante?

Travis looked into those souless eyes and the empty grin. Somewhere he thought he heard the dealing of cards and the clatter of dice. Double or nothing.

Slice of Life: Jonn Knox, survivor

From the open doorway leading to Travis’ palatial quarters: "You're a Throne-damned idiot."

Travis hoists his pack, wincing in anticipation of a pain that doesn’t come. Good as new. "Perhaps you do not understand.”

“No, I get it fine. You’ve weighed your life and find it so cheap that you’ll throw it into the loving wheels of Chaos and hope to get caught in an important bit of machinery." A pause, and then a bit of contempt creeps in. "Because some gutter-trash dreg thinks you should.”

If Travis rose to the bait, he gave no sign. “We would stand a much greater chance of making a difference if you joined us.”

“And you’d live longer if you stayed here! Our lives aren’t ours to throw away! I am beholden to my Lord-Sire, to the Inquisition, to my faith in the God-Emperor. It’s not my place to live, or die, to do anything but serve. That’s what I hang on to.” His tone became pleading, an argument with something not there. “We are nothing – the very company that keeps us could obliterate our bodies or souls – and I stay because I’m supposed to."

Travis said nothing, but stared at Knoxie with a faintly puzzled look on his face.

"You’re not being a hero. It's cowardice. But you’re not even rushing to death. What they’ll do to you, man… You’ll weep for the Emperor’s Peace."

Travis made a melancholy smile. “Perhaps you do not understand. Be well, Jonn Knox.” And he was gone.

Knox stood in the hallway for a few minutes longer.

“Coward.”

Incoming

Half a billion kilometers of open space, travelled at maximum acceleration.

The fleets of the Maelstrom were countless, dominating the skylines of the moons they passed - but they were still vulnerable. This was the most dangerous part of their transit, and they knew it. Titan behind them, Mars before them - and the shelter of the asteroid belt hundreds of millions of kilometers away.

The torpedo swarms were still approaching them from all directions, launched weeks or months ago from the orbitals and the Kuiper Belt. Sleep aboard the ships was only a brief and fitful thing, all defenses needed to be manned. There were no moons to hide behind, no debris or planetary rings. Just the open space of the void.

Even at a hundred thousand kilometers an hour, it would take them nearly seven months to cross the gap. Not that space thought in terms of top speed, but acceleration - but it showed how far they had to go, and why Huron was watching the screens, inwardly calculating, sleeping even less than the crew.

They had prepared for war for centuries, millennia, and ammo vehicles trailed the fleets - but so, too, had the defenses of Terra. Torpedoes cast into steel thousands of years ago, now leaping into the void, serving their purpose. Counter-batteries meeting them as they approached. The ammo depots of both sides were being expended as fast as possible, and would require centuries more to even come close to replacing.

And this was just the approach before the assault - laying siege to Terra or Mars would take exponentially more resources, and their prison ships were diminishing. Leaving the belt would begin to impact their conventional forces, the dregs and cultists used to soak up the enemy’s ammo. But soon enough, soon enough, they would have to begin committing their real forces, spending ships and fleets just to get that handful of kilometers further.

Dead bite by Hollywood Undead

The Belt

Ceres. Vesta. Pallas. Hygiea.

The largest asteroids in the belt, encompassing more than half of the mass - small planets in and of themselves. They had been carved up and colonized hundreds of centuries ago, turned to a thousand different purposes. Useful minerals were stripped and sent to Terra, Mars. Other asteroids were brought into their orbit, creating solar systems in miniature.

Between them, hundreds of orbitals, totalling billions of lives. You could live there your entire life, know nothing else, and still feel like nothing was lacking. They were the solitary points between worlds, allowing for resupply and respite - and were the obvious targets to anyone who glanced at the map of the worlds.

It was to these that Huron had divided his forces, four armadas, four targets. From here, he could decide on his approach of Terra or Mars, or cut the supply of comets that were heading to the inner system. It was a strong position, probably the best outside of the Hive Worlds themselves, and it was a safe harbor from the storm of missiles harassing his fleets.

Accordingly, it was one of the most defended strongholds, as well. Not a Cadia or Titan, certainly, but they would be considered fortress worlds in any other system. The armadas were already beginning their bombardments, targeting the weapon emplacements. They couldn’t use their full force - no nova cannons - as they wished to occupy the fortresses for themselves. It would be a landing, and the Traitor Legions fighting through the corridors a meter at a time.

Scattered through the targets, orbitals were already preparing their fusion reactors to overload. Huron would not find this an easy fight.

Enemy’s Gate is Down

Ceres was nearly a thousand kilometers in diameter - Hygiea was half that. They, as well as Vesta and Pallas, were wrapped in hundreds of orbitals, and the combat would take place below the surface as well as above it. On most worlds, you might need only need to fight across a kilometer of vertical terrain. On these, the battles would be the entire honeycomb - hundreds of kilometers.

The initial waves were disposable - penal units, slave battalions, cultists, lesser daemons, torpedoes and counter batteries. The last hundred kilometers of approach were overwhelming, full of light and fury. Thousands of ships decelerating from transit speeds, missiles accelerating, explosions and detonations. There was no planning, no technique by this point - just the pulling of the trigger and prayers to the God-Emperor.

Everything moved too fast to see, or to follow. Instead, it was simply filling the volume with hostile terrain, diminishing what was able to come through. The space was soon a morass of debris and exploded orbitals, expended ammo. Millions of dead, floating in the void - or their various parts. Many didn’t even leave enough components for that.

Many orbitals weren’t built for combat - the slightest peircing could cause explosive decompression, panic and the emergency measures of trying to close ancient doors. The defenses of the asteroids did not try to meet the enemy in orbit - they shot them as they approached, and waited for them to land. The first waves only job was to die, and perhaps leave ammo and equipment for the following waves to pick up.

It took days for the breach to be even worth considering, and the next advance fell with the weight of hammers. Chaos Space Marines, those Traitor Legions, many having fought since the Great Crusade. The finest cultists, the most powerful daemons. Hideous songs dominated the environment, transmitting soundlessly, causing suicides and madness.

Orbitals were flooded with terrible plagues and poisons, creating the living dead, and those who wished they were. They crawled and whimpered on the skin of their homes, madly, as worms. They reached out for other places, where the living still existed. Their spreading was slow, but unstoppable. They itched around the flanks, overcoming hardpoints, even as the Noise Marines advanced through the lines, ignoring all else.

The beachheads were embedding - bloody warfare on the ancient stone. In the sky, the combat of a million soldiers shrieked and burned, highlighted by the thousands of Traitor ships behind them. Torpedoes and plasma lit the void, turning the ice to superheated steam, shattering constructions that had rested for millennia.

The first of the fusion initiations flared, causing the entire invasion to stall for a moment, even as all looked at the repercussions. The defenders pushed forward, assaulting the beachheads, taking advantage of the distraction. Outnumbered and outgunned, the void militias fought Chaos Space Marines and daemons out of nightmares.

Hundreds of kilometers away, Huron watched it all thoughtfully.

The Trap is Sprung

She met Anna’s eyes. “You know what happens next, of course.”
“So do you.” Her tone was placid. “We come out in the end.”
“Might cause a bit of panic on Huron’s side of things.”
“He’ll get over it.”

The consummate act of warfare was Cannae - a double envelopment. Often attempted, rarely replicated, every general who fancied themselves a genius tried to make it happen. It involved fully encircling an enemy force - and it even overcame numerical advantage, at that. It didn’t matter if they outnumbered you, if the core group was pressed in by their comrades.

And Athena was nothing if not an artist.

At Golgotha, the Traitor Legions were already held in place - the xeno swarm ahead of them, the Cadians behind them. Indeed, Golgotha itself was such a thing, the Necron pylons being built in deep space. Not activated, as of yet, but they were simply a reaffirmation of the technique. No one able to escape the position.

The Maelstrom Armadas were held in place at the four major asteroids - committed to the assault. They would have difficulty withdrawing from them, and where would they go? No, better to commit, try to hold the position, prepare for the next move of the game. It was this necessity that forced them to stay, even as the irritations built up.

Weaponized Ork spores, last deployed at Golgotha, were distributing through the Chaos ships. Introduced as battle drugs to the defenders, the half-feral troops attacked the Cultists with a ferocity that shocked their brethren. And when they died, the Ork spores were released. Soon, the Chaos troops were fighting Orks as much as the human defenders. Indeed, the human forces were able to retreat deeper into their asteroids, while the Orks contested the surface.

The slave battalions at Pallas were even able to take advantage of the anarchy, seizing control of their ships and rescuing others. The Chaos fleets suddenly found themselves without human shields, and engaged at close range by a child-savior leading an army of the emaciated. Perhaps not a great victory in the strategic sense, but it gave morale to the flagging defenders on the surface.

Titan deployed, emerging out of the Warp nearly on top of the Belt. The full chapter of Grey Knights, and supporting members of the Cabal. And out of the Webway, on the other side of the Belt - Multiple Craftworlds. Beiltan. Iyanden. Ulthwe. All the Corsair fleets, and at their heart, a Saint leading a hundred Grey Knights.

Corsairs raid the gunships, hit and run boarding actions are literally their career. Grey knights focus on freeing prisoners to start riots on the screening ships, their personal teleporters will let them freely jump from one vessel to the next. Craftworlds maneuver to use the asteroids as cover so they can support the ground forces, they're not really intended for combat but they do have a lot of trained soldiers aboard. The dragon, assuming it can arrive before the battle is over, should focus on shielding the lighter corsair vessels on their attack run. Since we recently installed a teleportarium, we can keep track of the ground battle from above and dispatch troops as needed.

What do we have in the way of ships? I know we sent off nearly everything, but there's got to be some dregs that are coming online.

Also, what's the timescale we're looking at here? Months? Years?

HiHo ChiRho

This is why you don't leave children unattended, part III

Life aboard a prisoner ship can be, well, boring. Being a guard against said prisoners can have just as much a miserable experience onboard as the prisoners themselves. Nevermind the monotony of a quiet ship since the dregs don't put up much of a fuss, being too weak to do so. It's the knowledge that being on board what is effectively a human shield is what got Nathanael every time. At least the thrice damned imperials had better phrases to put their soon to be snuffed out minds at ease. "For the Chaos" does not sound nearly as inviting as "For the Emperor".

Yet Nathanael finally got something else to keep his mind occupied today. A sound he has heard far too often, just never outside the confines of the prison floors.

A child.

Crying.

Not much is written about the day to day life of a regular Chaos soldier in any written sources, let alone texts written in the Imperium. Needless to say, humanity still exists in the Chaos, although twisted with fear and hate. The forces of Chaos still includes a healthy amount of humans, and the biology still is there: People meet and procreate. Family structures exists. The inherent alarm of a child crying still brings adults brought about in Chaos to the same feelings as those in the Imperial sectors: Protect the brood.

And so it was that Nathanael heeded the cry and raced over to the origination of the sound. Obviously suspicious, since when does a child of all things manage to escape out into the main corridors of the ship? In the middle of a lockdown? Nathanael turns the corner to find a child in the center of a intersection by the mess hall, covered in blood.

Not hers though. The dismembered bodies of his comrades plainly show that. But that wasn't the creepiest bit. This next part would make Khorne flinch.

The damned girl immediately stopped crying and stared right into Nathanael's soul and grinned.

"Oh boy! another playmate!"

The hit to the back of Nathanael's skull would have been a mercy if implemented correctly. It was still painful and Nathanael went down like a sack of potatoes, but he could still see and hear the next part, much to his dismay.

"Travie! You were supposed to knock him out. You just smashed his spine."
"Well I'm so sorry. It's not like I spent time studying books on human anatomy and hitting people with blunt objects to incapacitate them."
"It's no matter. At least he now gets to watch the retribution in person."
"Adi-Lady A., why aren't you ... uh taking care of this one yourself?"
"He's the last of the actual guards on patrol. I figured the people would like him to have a trial of his peers judging him, so to speak. Drag him over."

Nathanael couldn't feel his arms and legs. He was helpless when the man dragged him away from the unusually healthy looking child around the corner.

Oh.

Oh no.

His "peers" grinned even worse than the child as the emaciated dregs tore into him. The finals words were whispered from the man's lips to Nathanael's surviving ear before he walked away.

"for the Emperor."

I really like a lot of this!

Corsairs raid the gunships, hit and run boarding actions are literally their career. Sounds great.

Craftworlds maneuver to use the asteroids as cover so they can support the ground forces, they're not really intended for combat but they do have a lot of trained soldiers aboard. I like it. I figure they also have fighters, transports or whatever else that can help doing [???]. Also the whole infinity circuit stuff, between these guys and the grey knights we suddenly have a ton of psyker power to leverage.

The dragon can keep track of the ground battle from above and dispatch troops as needed. I like this part, but don't think the ship has the staying power to "shield" the other vessels. The Dragon would be out there disrupting attacks and zipping around, it can't broadside up and go toe-to-toe with ships that are attacking the corsairs.

I am not sold on using the Grey Knights to free prisoners. They're the toughest, best equipped and Mary Sue-est Space Marines of the Imperium this side of the primarchs themselves. Freeing the slave ships means torpedoes become more effective, but couldn't they teleport past everything in-between and go straight for the flagship(s)? Not voting on their deployment, just trying to start some conversation about it.

Also I  heartily at the mental image of a moon almost the size of Mars popping into existence next to the fleets. Take it, bad guys!

Detonate to core structure of the asteroids the chaos fleets are trying to capture.

Now they're stuck between a hard place and a hard place and their primary attack units are gone and Eldar just turned up and who knows if the next target will be another large scale booby trap?

Basically; what can we afford to lose to the price of victory? What can't they afford?

The Good News

The little shuttle pod tumbled and bucked in the wash of torpedo detonations and debris spray. This would be their 23rd boarding. They had worked up to a fairly large frigate but found the level of adversary and number of guards time prohibitive, and so now they had retired to a small, boarding pod. It wasn't too hard to hide the little ship from all sorts of Heretek and Naval scans with his focused powers, but it would have munch easier if Knoxie had come along.

Their latest captive was coming around. Little Addie sure did a number on his fingers, but really he had done so much worse to those poor, poor slaves. Travis was precog of sorts, not as much as Knoxie, but his honing had allowed him so manner of prescience. In just 23.456 seconds the freed slaves on the last freighter would breech the captains deck. There the poor dregs soul meet a greater Demon. That is precisely when all 532 traitor legion detpacks the slaves were given would explode in redemptive hellfire. It would touch off the Warpfire infused reactors and punch their little ship right through the hull of their next target. Travis had only a moment to help little Addie into her safety harness, connect his own and persuade the captive to hail the oncoming ship.

Segranimus The Flayer was a very minor traitor marine from some forgotten chapter. Perhaps he was simply a guardsman that had been corrupted into one as some dark reward. What Segranimus knew was that things were not progressing well. The lines were not falling against their assault and ships were starting to simply go dead or turn against their own Heretic kind. He mused with gore drenched claws before noticing a transmission was coming through on an encrypted channel. There sat a dead man, throat cut and his face pulled into a rictus grin. There was the voice of a child. A little girl singing about the collapse of infrastructure with the inflection of the green skins. There was a figure in the dark and with a surge of Warpfire the dead body reached through the communications screen, grasped the Marine and whispered into the ear of Segranimus.

"Have you a moment for the word of Saint Fabiyan?"

A moment later the actual corpse of the man slammed into the control room, propelled behind a ruined boarding pod containing a pleased psychopath and a murderous orphan. It was good day to serve the God Emperor.
