Hey, I'm just reading through the thread now, but Investigator Cruentus, with the nickname Widowmaker, he wouldn't happen to have a penchant for cold weather, his favourite gun wouldn't happen to be called a Liberator, and he wouldn't happen to have a Russian-ish accent?

B I'm perfectly ok with seeing Ohone tread on the Path of Glory one day. But for reasons that fit her more. When her thirst for knowledge outreaches Imperial Law too much, when perhaps those we choose to attach ourselves to become victims of the Imperial machine, when the backstabbing of politics makes the alternative uninteresting.

But right now, right now this demon is not offering anything we don't feel we can get on our own. This offer is a boilerplate 'I'll offer you all you desires' thing, could have been made for everyone. If Chaos wants us, they'll have to try a bit harder than this.

I like to imagine Ohome having the 'shoulder angel, shoulder devil' moment, with the angel going 'No Ohome, don't betray the Omnissiah, kill the demon' and on her other shoulder the shoulder devil just looks disgusted and is like 'What, we merit no more than some improvised, one-size-fits-all Chaos deal? This? This I could totally see Ohone fall to Chaos for, or just away from the Emperor. This is knowledge in its rawest form. I mean, if harvesting this knowledge ends up profiting the Imperium and Omnissiah, hurray. Pure hearts and Minds are born every second by the millions. There is no shortage of them. That drivel you spout is good to make sure the dregs don't step out of line. We don't want THEM to start messing with anything. But we're Ohone. We're a genius among the Machine Cult. We're an Interrogator. We're part of the Family of a Rogue Trader. We on the other hand, can sift the sludge out of the holy. We can repair it. We can bring the glories of the past back now, and lead the Imperium in a new era of resurgent growth!

I tell you what we should salvage, the souls of the poor men enslaved to this foul xeno tech heresy and the lives of our men.

You want me to admit there's a risk to our soul? Fine. There's a risk that looking into this will corrupt us to the very core if we screw up. But if we're not prepared to risk out lives, our hearts, our souls, then we're better off asking the Lord Sire to put us in a cubicle and look at the same screen for the rest of our lives. We aspire to be a Magos, an Inquisitor, a Rogue Trader, and more. These things are not gained without taking risks. To turn away from this advancement because we're worried about what it might do to our soul is not faith. It is cowardice and selfishness.

And these things are not gained while being soft-hearted about others. It's probably just their shells and such. The Omnissiah has taken their souls I'm sure.

We are of the machine. Thoughts of ego and pride and cowardice are not in the equation. We cannot allow the adversary to gain even a single inch or a single soul. This machine is temptation in its purest form. The devil will not approach with a handful of feces, but a golden banquet of the greatest magnitude. What we lack in material the Omnissiah will provide. Our goal, above all else, is the protection and advancement of the imperium of man, so it follows that that exact temptation is what the ruinous powers would bait us with. There will be another ship, untainted and pure when the God Emperor wills us to find one. Pity those that trust in reason and would put themselves before the Emperor. Their only reward is a wretched death. Intolerance and zeal are the mark of the faithful. Put this heresy to the flame and faith in the emperor to gain the greatest reward of all. He who dares to preserve this abomination will know only treachery and retribution. The Emperor provides, gain will not be found in the taint of the xeno and the heretic.

Considering the possible gains, the possibility of the loss of a few souls is well within acceptable parameters. We have no reason to believe that there are more ships like this. The fact that we find it now is already a miracle of the Omnissiah. The Omnissiah provides. He has provided us the tools to repair. And see, he has provided the object to repair. To turn our back on it, to reject the challenge that is before us and destroy, rather than redeem these sacred things is unacceptably wasteful. Our goal is the advancement of the Emperor. If we let our fear of the ruinous powers deny the Imperium the power and knowledge this represents, we play in their hand. Is this a trap? Potentially. But an objective risk assessment will show that the possible gains well outweigh the possible losses. Which is merely our souls, as well as a few million others.

Arkanomen posted:

Compromise is akin to treachery. How many souls would you toss into damnation for a single step forward? The power of the Imperium comes not from the barrel of a gun or the mouth of a factory but from the will of billions upon billions of faithful souls. Your logic is reasonable but reason is the first step to heresy. There is but only one action warrented when presented with suc foulness. Purge the unclean. Put it to the purification of flame and zeal and if anything remains, it does so by the will of the Omnissiah. Then we will know what is to be saved. Fear is the domain of the animal, faith and zeal will preserve our silicon soul this day. We are not required to think, only to act. There are no user serviceable parts inside. The machine spirit is corrupted. Press enter to format drive.

Our own ship has faced corruption by a demon. Do you suggest we 'purge' it as well. Kill everyone from the servitors up to the Lord Sire, just to make sure nothing was taken? Do we perhaps burn this planet to cinders as well? The whole Sektor maybe?

To never compromise is the luxury of the dreg, the 'established' Family member, the lower class Hive worker. They need not make important decisions, so they need never compromise. We are not one of them. Our position requires that we make a gain/risk with objectivity and yes, reason. The first Cat was corrupted, and there was very little it could benefit us and much it could cost us, thus we purged it. When Woodhouse was corrupted, he offered us substantive benefit, but not enough to tolerate the risks involved, so we purged him. This machine is a risk, like the cat was, like Woodhouse was. Yet the benefits greatly outweigh the risks. Much like we don't destroy the Beast, even though it too has suffered corruption.

We have committed a purge on the Beast of all those tainted by Abraxus, and some that were only suspected. Do your duty, cleanse the filth. Salvage what we can.

We purged the unclean in a way that did not destroy the whole. The Beast deserved that for its value to the Imperium, and this Relic deserves at least as much respect. Salvaging what we can is exactly what we are doing. By calmly and objectively taking stock of the situation and finding the way to purge the offensive elements out without destroying that which is Sacred to the Omnissiah. To those of you saying "We should take advantage of this!", the problem isn't JUST the AI in and of itself and whether it can be reasoned with. The other, arguably even bigger problem, is getting the rest of the Imperium to accept it. Whatever good might come of accepting this xeno/heretek, that good is easily canceled out by the entire Imperium declaring the ship "Shoot on sight." Or, possibly even worse from other points of view, triggering an outright civil war as some accept the possibilities of the tech and others declare it heresy.

If this were any other setting, it might be possible to thread the needle between risks and reward, knowledge and perils. But this is 40K, and the massive weight of the Imperium and its traditions rests upon our hands as we approach this task. Anything that doesn't end in the destruction of the AI is going to put us right in the middle of one disaster or another.

Well, if we inform the AI of the danger it is in, and convince it to pretend otherwise, we could manage.

And honestly, the Imperium of Man is a pretty lovely place. I'm totally game for us trying to improve it. To try to make the Pre-Imperium Mankind a thing. Sure, it'll be a disaster, but as things are, the Imperium IS a rotting, husk, slowly forgetting more and more of their knowledge with each generation and dying, world by world. I am perfectly on board with risking Ohone's life to try to make this a story of Ohone and Athena working together to bring the past back in a massive way. Exactly. Athena is not some dumb program. It's a full AI. Which means it should be able to deal with extra information, and act rationally on it. Whether she accepts the AM as inheritors to the Martian Federation or not, she can realize that she won't be able to brute force that. She'll need help. And we can give it to her.

I obviously don't intend us to fly this baby up,, two middle fingers in the imperium's direction and charging at Mars. We can definitely be subtle and discreet about this. Try to change the system from within. Between our Rosetta, the technology we have and our IG contacts, we have the resources to get a lot of poo poo done. Chances are that at some point the masks would fall and we'd have the Inquisition gunning for us, and possibly the rest of the Imperium. But if we play our cards right, we'd have enough allies by then, within and possibly without that we could withstand it.

But yes. I really want the Lazarus Project to succeed. And I think there's a good many of our fellow AM's who could see the charm of this.

(Also, I am reminded of that Slice of Life telling us we have some bona fide pre-Emperor humans locked in stasis somewhere on the Beast. We don't know that IC-ly of course)

Exactly. We'd just have to be careful about who to reveal ourselves to.

And, you know, since we're being pretty heretical anyway, consider that a bunch of Heretek folks in the Eye, if htey knew what we might do would flip off the gods of Chaos with all their limbs to assist us. Obviously, we can't really hang out with them while we're still undercover, but... well, we could send pupils there, and forment a rebellion among the forces of Chaos even as we try to recruit among the AM.

Go with this. For what happens afterwards. A lot depends on both the amount of power we'll have gotten by then and how well we're hiding our loyalty to her, and how discreet Athena is about her true nature.

One possibility I see is that we kind of continue to infiltrate the Empire from within, operating separately from Athena. Try to make sure more and more of the AM will be on our side, see to it that the most likely powerful opponents to Lazerus get killed, discredited or silenced. Make sure that either we ARE the Lord-Sire, or the Lord Sire is on board with the plan, and possibly other Rogue Traders are going along with it. Perhaps get high ranking IG officers to go along with this. Oh, and try to make sure we're an Inquisitor, and maybe even get in touch with some other sufficiently Radical Ones. If we're feeling very saucy, we might even look into poaching Hereteks away from Chaos, allowing them to serve Athena, as long as they reject the Chaos Gods. In the meantime, Athena might be doing her own thing, building up resources and armies with us supplying her what and who she needs on occasion. Start building a 'Martian Federation in exile' All the time, working towards, well, the same as Chaos tends to work towards. A decapitation Strike towards Mars and Holy Terra. Once we hold the Golden Throne, no matter what our intention with it is by then. Perhaps we'll destroy it. Perhaps we'll leave it as is. Perhaps we'll bring the Emperor to life, once we have that we can hope that all Imperial Forces will yield. This would make Athena very much our helper, without having her to be constantly there. She would be much like Kozilek or the Lord-Sire.

If Athena is... less skilled at subtlety, or if people enjoy it, we could also go for becoming a bunch of loveable rogues. Trying to stay one step ahead of the Imperium as we gather more and more resources. Maybe now and then taking a chance with the Eye of Terror and just making it Black Crusade. Doesn't mean we'd start worhipping the Chaos gods. No, we'd be there to introduce an actual Goddess. Maybe we'll even find that Slaanesh demon. And in our great mercy, perhaps we'll even allow it to kneel and serve a true Goddess of Perfection.

As for tone concerns. It can still be dark, in a hopeful way. Because Ohone was willing to go pretty far when she was mostly just chasing her own ambition. Imagine what she's willing to do if it means bringing this huge change to bear. Not to mention that Athena might be chillingly inhuman in her estimation of other lifeforms. But yes, a lot of the 'fixed' things of 40K will be broken. But I... like that. It doesn't have to happen to any story, and it doesn't have to be easy, but this is not a Black Library Novel. We don't have to worry about the Canon or about leaving things for the next author. This setting is there for us to change.
