Erika the Red

Head pounding, Erika struggled to her feet, which was the first sign something was wrong. Everything in her body felt...disconnected. She found herself forced to pay attention to motions she would have found instinctive before...before she was on...Furia? That was the only ocean world she could remember from her charts, anyway. Not renowned for being a nice place.

As she finished standing up, she glanced down and noted with annoyance that most of the ornamentation and extra plating had been scoured from her armor. As she glanced up, she saw a massive half-mechanical space marine waving a melta at her and demanding she speak for some unknowable reason; Erika's blade and pistol were in hand before he could even blink.

"Listen here, cogboy; you're talking to Erika the Red, and-UGH, what has happened to my sword?!"

Resisting the immediate urge to hurl the badly degraded weapon into the sea, she made a more full inspection of her equipment, then glanced up at the suddenly far more intimidating space marines on the platform with her. The equipment was bad enough, but from the utterly drained way she felt, she wondered if that Bloodthirster hadn't gotten a bigger bite of her soul than she had thought.

"I think we're already getting off on the wrong foot here. Apologies, but I wasn't expecting to wake up to space marines waving guns at me. I am Erika the Red, Scourge of the Helix, and this is indeed Furia. Watery cesspit, full of broken ships and bad things. I'm not clear on the specifics, I was never stupid enough to try to raid the wrecks here. What I do know is that it's probably in our best interests not to stay on this planet for long."

Erika frowned at the discussion of the date. "Truth be told, I've never paid much attention to the date, so I haven't the slightest idea when I'm even from. Chronometers never seem to work right in the Vortex, and it's been a long time since I had any reason to leave."

Attracted to the crates, she gives them a cursory examination and grunts. Normally she'd consider most Munitorum-quality equipment beneath her attention, but desperate times called for desperate measures. "If neither of you can crack these open, I could try to carve them open with my power sword. It still works, even if it is a piece of junk now, but it would probably take a while and it might damage the contents."

Erika whirled on her heels at the sound of the creature's emergence, grabbing for her power sword as soon as she saw the gigantic shrimp. Trying to ignore the deep sense of distaste she felt for the badly damaged weapon, she dashed towards it, trying to drive her blade into the weakest point of its shell. She'd be damned if they were going to be outdone by an overgrown crustacean.

The power sword had an admirable history. First forged for her great-grandfather in return for an undisclosed "favor" performed for the Mechanicus, it had tasted the blood of untold numbers of xenos and pirates in its time; it was one of the few items from outside the Vortex that Erika had cared to keep when the lure of Chaos overpowered the comfort of the Rogue Trader life.

Now, of course, it was a piece of trash; the blade's balance was ruined and the power field kept stuttering, briefly flaring bright before dimming to nearnonexistence. Snarling in frustration, Erika swung the blade in a flurry, hoping to catch the shrimp off guard.

Furious, Erika returned her sword to her scabbard, muttering curses under her breath.

"Frigging thing. Now that we're not being attacked, what's our next move? I think that creature has already demonstrated why it would be a poor idea to go for a swim out to one of those wrecks; shall we try lighting one of those tires on fire to make a smoke signal and hope some of the refugees are drawn by the possibility of scrap? From there we can trade them the supplies we've found for passage, or if they're not the friendly type we can murder them all and steal their boat."

Having said her piece, Erika turned and began eyeing the mist suspiciously, wary that it might be a sign of something worse on its way.

A Khornate Tech-Priest, wounded warrior and a sorcerer walk into a bar... thought Erika, taking in the new arrivals. Still, she couldn't complain about having a few more guns and sharp objects around for when the distant ships arrived, and the sorcerer in particular could come in handy for dissuading the locals of any violent ideas. Nothing cowed the masses like warp-fire.

"Greetings, brethren in Chaos. I am Erika the Red, and if you're in the market for dried recaf, lho-sticks, or mediocre porno, you've come to the right floating chunk of debris. All joking aside, the locals are probably going to try to eat us and take our stuff. We should hope for diplomacy and plan for combat."

Nodding approvingly at Ariston's impromptu barricade, Erika sets about trying to appear busy by rooting around in the containers to check for anything that might be hidden, pocketing a pack of lho-sticks and a particularly racy picture in the process. Never know when those could come in handy, at least for Slaaneshi purposes.

Edit: I am easily confused as to who is actually showing up.

Erika hesitates, then rolls her eyes and holds out her power sword to Victus.

"You, soldier. I'm going to regret this moment of kindness to strangers, but you can take my sword until you find something else sharp to stab people with. It's a piece of junk now anyway. But just so we're clear: if you lose this like you lost your last one, I'll find something awful enough to do to you that even Slaanesh will wince."

Turning, she then watches in puzzlement as a few of the others begin crowding around the shrimp's corpse.

"You know what? I think I'd rather just stand here and parlay with the bloodthirsty natives than try to wedge myself into a dead monster. By all means, though, enjoy it."

Giving Victus my sword temporarily out of pity. He can get more use out of it than me anyway.

Also, hooray for needing charm and stealth, the two skills I was sure I could totally pick up later. I'm just going to stand near the crates for cover and try to talk to them.

The exploding skimmer reminded her of the beauty of void combat, and less pleasantly, of the blast that had seen her banished to this world in the first place. Shaking off the semi-unpleasant nostalgia as she spots the scavenger ship moving in for a ramming run, she draws her bolt pistol and braces for impact.

Quick Draw pistol.

If bracing for impact against the crate is a free action, Overwatch (if I'm still standing when the boarding ramp lowers at the end of this round, Standard Attack on the first guy I see in the ship. If I take a shot, enemies in the kill zone must make a +0 Pinning Test)

The past few moments had been a blur; the smash of the ship had been as she expected, but the screaming Raptor slamming down had nearly taken her completely off guard. "Nearly" being the key word; she still soaked the shockwave with minimal effort, maintaining her balance perfectly. When Erika heard the comment about being a "trophy slave," however, any confusion about the sudden attack she might have had was replaced by blind anger.

Standing up, she raises her bolt pistol and snarls, "Slave?! Pray you die here, Raptor, because if you survive I'll clip your wings and maroon you on this damned platform myself!" She then takes quick aim and snaps off a shot at the Raptor, trying not to clip Opifex instead.

Erika's attention is absorbed by the sudden lightning storm on the platform; as Ariston hauled himself out of it, ranting furiously and drawing fresh weapons , she made a mental note to stay on his good side.

She turns back in time to witness another debacle as Opifex, the sole meatshield between her and the claws of the raptor, staggers back from a particularly nasty chainsword. Still, if she was going down she'd go down trash-talking.

"Surely you know better than to threaten a fellow Slaaneshi with torture? If you hate a fellow Slaaneshi, you give them a fast and ignoble death, like this."

Erika hammers the bolt pistol at the marine and braces herself in case this doesn't work.

So far, this was definitely one of the worst days in Erika's recent memory. As if getting blown up by some two-bit Slaanesh-betraying pirate wasn't humiliating enough, her ancestral sword was trashed and couldn't even harm a shrimp, and now her gun had punctuated her insults with nothing but mocking clicks. It barely even cheered her up to see the raptor suffer the loss of his senses and arm. Seeing Gozer approaching, she resisted the urge to throw the gun at the raptor's face and instead held it out at arm's length to the heretek. Nothing to do but grit her teeth and bear the universe's insults; a chance to take out her frustrations on someone else would surely be along soon assuming that nothing else terrible happened, and really, what were the chances of that?

Delay until after Gozer and start to Reload, spreading the remaining half-action of reloading into next round. If I can't do that, just Guarded Action and sulk about the lost clip instead.

As the crowd dropped their weapons, Erika slapped her last clip into the bolt pistol and re-holstered it. Now that they had a ship, they could take a few steps towards getting off this cesspit before something ate them, and that was almost as wonderful as that smug raptor getting decapitated. It felt like the fight had dislodged a bit of the rust, too. She nods to Gozer. "Thanks for fixing my gun. Hopefully that was just the clip and the gun isn't even more damaged than I thought."

While she waited for that, she turned and started thinking over all the things that just happened. There was new company arriving from the nearby ship; she'd wait for them to introduce themselves. She had no idea what to think of the flying Ork contraption, but maybe it would be worth following. Orks had an odd tendency to blunder into good fortune even when they didn't actually know where they were going, and she'd traded with enough Freebotaz to know they could even be reasonable if you convinced them they could get a better fight elsewhere by helping you. As for the crowd of natives, they'd be needing them to manage the ship, and the only reason they had to help them was a fear of death, so she'd leave it to one of the Astartes to cow them into obedience.

Erika waves to the new arrivals as she walks towards the boarding ramp. "Erika the Red, at your service. Let's get this on the road; we have a galaxy to burn."

Pausing briefly to investigate the pile of weapons around the corpses, she concludes that none of them are even remotely worth using. Annoyed but unsurprised, she continues up into the ship, then pauses by the radio before turning back to the others.

"Oy, Vatra. You seem the talky type; would you like to try your hand at this radio? This whole "ship stealing" thing might be a little easier if they don't know something's gone wrong."

The ship ride had almost been pleasant. It was nice to be back at the controls of something again, yelling orders at a crew of savage maniacs, even if her only real experience was in flying voidships. It was pretty similar, all things considered; just fewer dimensions and more air.

She'd been in the middle of choosing a target from the crowd awaiting them on the Dead Shark, content to let the others rush in first, when the damned Plague Drone arrived. It wasn't bad so far as daemons went; she'd talked face-to-face with things that made her skull throb far more. It may have brought a flesh-peeling stench and an intimidating array of weaponry, but that was no reason to panic. After all, it would probably take a while for it to gun down the crowd of scavengers they'd brought, and that left plenty of time to improvise a way to kill it. How tough could one daemon engine be, really?

Content that the situation was in hand, she turned and charged the mutants staring at Victus, aiming a good running kick for the one on the right. If she left Victus to fight them alone, the mutant bastards could harm her precious sword even more, or worse, lay their dirty polluting hands on it.

Advancing towards the horde, Erika snapped off another shot, grinning madly. She'd forgotten the simple pleasure of gunning down the weak and distracted, and stealing the lives of Nurglites, all of them so desperate to hang onto their empty, joyless existence that they would worship a god that took away pain, as though pain was something to fear instead of a glorious reward... that was the best part. Their desperation was pathetic and a bolt round to the face was all they deserved.

Snickering at the sad death of the Daemon Engine, Erika gave her Bolt Pistol an overdramatic spin and returned it to the holster. When the other boarding ramp came down, however, she quickly whipped it back out, covering the new threat angle with a watchful eye.

After hearing the Priest's proposal, she shook her head dismissively. "Last time I was around something to do with Khorne it literally ate part of my soul. That's probably why my memory is full of gaps and I'm fighting like some idiot amateur. If you do that ritual, I won't be participating. Now, if there's a ritual we can do with the crate of porno, on the other hand, do tell me. I'd hate to miss out on that."

"I have 6 bolts left and I don't think a sprinting facekick will dissuade a pissed-off Plague Marine and his entourage, considering it barely distracted some idiot mutant. We should cut our losses and either steal this ship or strip it for parts and wreck the engine. Either way, we have somewhere to go: that Scavenger Lord's space port. Granted, he'll probably want to murder us for killing a bunch of his lieutenants, but if we can get to a void-rated ship I can fly it, and then we can leave this horrible frigging planet behind and go pillage something worth our time."

Having said her part, Erika glanced down into the stinking, pitch-black lower decks of the Dead Shark and wrinkled her nose in disgust. There couldn't possibly be anything down there worth her time.

Power at a price wasn't an unfamiliar concept. Trade and piracy alike were all about that. She'd sold a lot of strange things, but had never considered selling her soul. After all, how could one aspire to immortality without a soul?

But now, after watching everything she did bounce near-harmlessly off her foes? Now she knew what it was to be weak, and suddenly immortality didn't seem so important. How could she earn apotheosis in her current state? How could she even return to the Helix? If she was going down, she wanted to do it in flames.

More importantly, no matter what the priest said, deep down she knew no two-bit lesser daemon called up by some crackpot Tech-Priest could ever really devour her soul; her soul was clearly too magnificent, even with a few Bloodthirster bite marks. Who said she couldn't kick it out after she'd had her fun?

Erika steps back from the stairs to the lower deck and grins. Time to get back into the Dark Prince's good graces.

"You say there's power to be had? I'll pay your price, Gozer, and prove you wrong. Shove all the daemons you want in my head; they won't have any idea who they're messing with. Can you summon a Daemonette under these conditions? A Slaaneshi daemon might not take kindly to a Khornate calling it up, but I think we have enough desperation, sacrifices, and crates of cheap porno to make up for it. Will it help if I get high as hell, because I have obscura and a flask of fine wine. Mixing them will seriously screw you up, take it from a Slaaneshi."

I am down with Operation Daemon. This is going to either end wonderfully or really, really badly, and either way I love it.

"Compliments and warnings acknowledged, Ariston. I shall be nothing but careful with the terrifying power of the warp that shall be at my very fingertips once I get my daemon body-friend."

Erika's knee-jerk response to the mention of combat drugs was one of enthusiasm, but she steadied herself. They're no use without my sword, Victus needs your sword anyway, calm down, no need to squeal like a scholam-girl and jam every needle you see into your neck because AHAHAHA DRUGS DRUGS DELICIOUS INTOXICATION FOR THE PRINCE YEEEESSSSS no, no, calm down. Calm down. You're a frigging pirate queen, act like it. There is a time for that and it is not now.

Taking a deep breath, Erika steps back towards Gozer. "I think that, given that all I have left is a bolt pistol and 6 rounds, I am better suited for a recovery team on the tech-priest corpses. If someone staying here wants to borrow my pistol, feel free. Just remember that same rules apply as when I gave the soldier my sword. You lose it or break it? I torture you to death in the worst way I can think of, and trust me, I can think of some really, really bad ways to die."

The others had done a regrettably good job of stripping everything valuable out of the place, which was disappointing. She'd hoped they might have missed a shotgun or at least a half-decent knife. Still, the news about the ritual circle was cheering. Turning back, Erika starts moving back towards the hole in the side of the ship.

"Well, somehow I don't think we're going to call up Slaaneshi daemons on this planet anyway. There's precious little depravity here. If we make it offworld, we might be able to hire the services of a Slaaneshi summoner for the ritual, and then the fun can really begin. So by all means, let's get back before all the good corpses are looted. They probably shoved him into the water by now, that seems to be the go-to plan for dealing with all the awful things we keep picking fights with."

Wiping any blood from the corpses off her hands as they prepared to descend, she met the Priest with a smirk. If he wanted repartee as they climbed down, he'd have it.

"Oh, but it runs so much deeper than blood. To a Slaaneshi like me, every experience must be savored; that most of our experiences end in bloodshed is as much a fault of a brutal and pitiless universe as it is our own. Khorne feeds on the glory of victory and the metal tang of vaporized blood, and delicious as those are, he denies himself all the other experiences on a battlefield. Let me tell you one. The desperate guardsman scrambles back from my blade, praying first to his comrades to help him, but they are all dead; then his Emperor, and he is dead and distant indeed; finally he is clutching at some trinket of a long-forgotten homeworld when I carve open his guts and leave him to bleed out. He does not even scream; he only shakes and cries and clutches his little locket as he enters the fetal position and dies in a dark hole in a burning city. His despair was like wine, Gozer, and I only tasted it secondhand. Bloodshed, ultimately, is only the beginning and the end, all at once, of true passion , feeling, and life. Khorne hates us because understanding us would hurt him even more, to know that he is a God of War who has missed its true beauty all this time."

A year ago, if you had told Erika she'd soon be debating Chaotic philosophy with a Khornate tech-priest while climbing down the side of a sinking voidship in the middle of the ocean, she'd probably have laughed. (And then had you tortured to death). Now, however, it didn't seem any stranger than anything else. Resurrection from the dead, giant killer shrimp, reasonably polite Khornates; at this point she was starting to legitimately expect a Lord of Change to manifest and hand out party favors, or perhaps a force of Grey Knights would deep-strike in and offer assistance. This entire planet was turning out to be a glorious parade of one-of-a-kind experiences.

"The battlefield is only pure if you ignore everything but the act of bloodshed, dear Gozer. The sounds of artillery and screaming, the scent of exploded bowels and las-shot ozone, the blinding flashes of plasma and explosions, the taste of the blood-mist where your enemies used to be standing; it's a glorious, mad cacophony. Just ask the Noise Marines; they really know how to have a good time."

"More importantly, most of us only get one life, and then it's off to the warp to be consumed by daemons forever; when all that awaits is torment, there is no reason not to indulge every whim and vice. So rest assured: you have doubtless felt great pleasure in your blood-rituals, but I feel pleasure in every moment, in every single pulse of agony and ecstasy. Even my death was pleasurable, disappointing as it was, and I give thanks to the Prince that I was chosen to experience death and live on to experience yet more."

Glancing up from what the scavengers had presented to her as The Capn's Chair, she smirked at Gozer's return. Nothing entrapped an intellectual like a debate seasoned with mysteries, and you knew he was hooked when he came back to talk even after he thought he'd gotten the last word. Time for another dance. Erika shifts to sit sideways in the oversized chair, affecting an air of boredom.

"Oh, well, it's really not much to talk about. My whole away party mutinied on me, at the behest of a little two-bit pirate called Yuri the Reaper. A name that I assure you he chose himself. Lured me into tunnels full of dumb traps and my own traitorous crew, then when I finally got to where I thought the daemon weapon was, he'd beaten me there and filled the room with mining explosives. Sauntered up to my shredded body and stabbed me with the daemon blade, revealing in the process that he betrayed Slaanesh to kill me: The Bloodthirster in the blade was sinking its teeth into my soul, and then suddenly I'm here with an odd sensation of loss, my gear wrecked, and the strange bedfellows they're always saying accompany times like these."

"Does that answer your question? Have any delightful tales of your own past to share?"

"Ah, rune weaponry. I've heard of them, but never seen one in action. Getting a decent number of those into the hands of an army would be powerful indeed, and even the weak-willed could wield them without risk of madness."

Standing up from the oversized Astartes chair, Erika starts to stroll towards the exit.

"As for what to do when we get back? Depends on how dead they all are. Worst-case, we can try to parlay with the Plague Marine, but I wouldn't expect that to work. If we run, he'll almost certainly call for backup to hunt us down, seeing as his ship's vox is intact. So really, killing him or at least distracting him long enough to smash his radio is the only option. I'm thinking that we have enough spare promethium on here to make a few firebombs. Nurglites are wet and slow to burn, but once the rot-gas in their guts catches, they rarely can put themselves out. Assuming the others haven't already killed him or vice-versa, I should have plenty of time to get over to Plaga and torch him. Would you like a few, or should I just make two for me?"

"Awww. I wanted to set something on fire. Oh well; guess I won't be needing these."

Handing off the firebombs to the nearest crewman to add back to the promethium reserve, Erika dismounts the Rust Wave with a flourish and immediately sets about the most important task of all: looting anything valuable. There had to be a gun or sword somewhere on this planet that wasn't utter trash.

"This ship might be better, but on the other hand, it did belong to a Nurglite. They tend to let their stuff fall apart, Lord of Decay and all that. Might want to look over all the systems before we jump to conclusions about which one to take. Oh, and if anybody spots a weapon that isn't made of scrap or covered in pus, tell me. I don't want to have to waste bolts on weaklings the next time we pick a fight."

"I agree; we head to Kanro for supplies. And Gozer, I assure you, I will always be insane enough to want a daemon riding along with me, but are you sure attempting a Slaaneshi summoning ritual on a planet dedicated to the Blood God, while you in turn are dedicated to the Blood God, while in a warp rift that certainly sounds connected to the domains of the Blood God, is a better idea than just stealing a voidship from Skyreach? Well, so much for Opifex; Erika thought it was a shame to see him go out that way after all he'd done. More importantly, it was a disturbing reminder that any of them could be cut down by a moment of bad luck. The faster they got to Kanro, the faster she could get to either a voidship or a suitable place for the possession ritual. Before all this, she would have balked at sacrificing the chance for apotheosis for power in the present, but anything was preferable to dying, forgotten. If she was going out, she was going out big. Besides, who said that the Possessed never achieved Princedom? Somebody had to be the first, and who better than Erika the Red?

---

There wasn't a great deal to do on the ship, which was depressing. She had started out practicing with the sword she'd found, finding that it was barely passable as a weapon. At least it was consistent, unlike her junked power sword and its flickering power field; the faster she could find someone to fix it up a little, the better. After that, she'd spent some time examining the ship's controls and systems, concluding that there wasn't really anything to be done to speed it up. Certainly couldn't do anything interesting with it, not like you could with a jump pack or a tank or a voidship. She'd have killed for any of those.

Ariston's little training regimen did inspire one good idea on how to spend the time; she needed to start working a retinue. It always paid to have a few disposable men around to soak up spare bullets. Even if they were worthless she could always just shoot one to prove a point, that was always fun. After a little deliberation, she picked out an ugly fellow who always seemed to be tinkering with a flamer that he'd clearly looted from some Imperial wreck, judging by the crudely scratched-out aquila on the backpack tank. He seemed perfect material: hulking, well-armed, and clearly none too bright (considering that the height of his modifications was a knife he'd crudely attached under the barrel).

Erika walked over to him casually during one of the rare breaks Ariston allowed the men. "Oy, you. Whatever your name is. You're clearly more competent than the others, and I think you've got what it takes. Stick with me, don't ask questions, and do what I tell you, and you can get off this planet with us. Deal?"

The man stared at her dumbly for a moment, then grinned. "Deal."

"Welcome, Keraun, welcome. You're lucky that your pod arrived so near to us...but then, luck doesn't exist here. The Dark Gods clearly have plans for you. If you'll all excuse me, then, I'll be getting us moving again."

Kanro, as expected, looked to be a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Erika couldn't be happier. It obviously wasn't going to live up to the grand marketplaces to be found in the rare and ever-shifting neutral zones of the Helix, but this wasn't a Slaaneshi world (sadly) and so she knew she had to temper her expectations. A little. She still wasn't going to settle for the cheap garbage the merchants passed off on the common types. She motions for her bodyguard to follow her off the ship.

"Right, well, I'm going to go have a look for any dispossessed types in need of a ship. While I'm at it I'll look around, see if I spot the Orks or anything else of interest. I've dealt with Freebootaz in the past; Orks can be quite useful if given direction. Come along, er, what was your name again?

The scarred man finished shouldering his flamer and grunts, "Serge, mamzel."

The chainsword wasn't particularly lovely to look upon, but it was properly balanced and had a lovely purr to its engine. Making a mental note to find some garish paint to customize her too-plain gear, Erika finished slotting the bolt pistol clips into her belt and headed off towards the area the locals said the Orks were. If they were heading to some daemon-infested warp anomaly, it would be lovely to have a few dumb, angry xenos between them and the denizens of the Immaterium.

Pausing at the sight of the bar, Erika immediately begins regretting this idea. There were easily ten times more Orks than she'd expected. Had they all somehow been on that aircraft? Erika turns to Serge for a moment.

"There are three ways this can go: they'll be cooperative, or uncooperative. Either way, they might also be violent. If things go south, toast 'em and run for the market; we'll need a lot of meatshields and the crowd's biggest there. And uh, no sudden moves. Orks never need an excuse to crack skulls, it's literally all they do."

Serge nods and fiddles with the nozzle of his flamer, wondering what he'd gotten himself into with this bodyguard duty idea.

Ork posted:

"Oi! Watchu want here hummies?? Dis here is gonna be our base from now on, and no one iz gonna change dat! If yer lookin' for a scrap we'll give it to ya like we gave the ones who tried before!"

As the Ork guard points out their handiwork, Erika steps to what seems like a respectable-yet-wise distance from the Ork, flashes what she hopes the xenos will see as a winning grin, and keeps her hands as far from her weapons as possible.

"I'm not here for a fight, Ork, and I'm sure these idiots had it coming messing with you. I'm here to offer you fine fellows an opportunity: you'll get a fight, loot, and a chance to leave this planet and go someplace where there'll be more people to fight and loot. How's that sound?"

The Ork's beady little eyes glimmer at the thought; even if all he'd heard was the words "fight" and "loot." It looks like he might actually call over his boss...

At the very least, it was proof that these Orks were reasonable...for Orks. Turning to Serge, she waves him off in the direction of the bar. He takes the hint quickly, if only because he wants to forget that he's surrounded by murderous xenos as fast as possible. She takes a few steps in the Boss's direction and gives a brief bow. "I see you're the Boss around here. I am Erika the Red, Captain of the Rust Wave, and I have a proposition for you."

Not waiting for him to answer, she pulls up a chair and seats herself across from him, then continues. "I'm here because we can both get something good out of this. You get a fight, all the loot you find, and most importantly, you can get off this planet and go somewhere with loot worth taking and people worth fighting. You've made it obvious the weaklings around here don't have a chance against you, after all." She nods in the direction of the door and the Marine's corpse.

"My warband and I are looking to get off this planet, just like everyone else. We're heading to a place called the Grasp. There's 5 portals to other worlds there, but they're guarded by daemons. I can't trust the weak-willed humans that fill this place not to run or go mad at the sight. You Orks, on the other hand, are right badasses. So: you lot take a ride on my ship and we kill our way to the portals. If there's anything worth stealing in there, you get first rights to it. At the end, you can take your warband through whichever portal you like. How's that sound?"

Erika glances towards the bar and nods to Pandora. "If you want in on this, we'll take you too." Having said her part, she leans back in the chair and waits for the Ork to answer.

Which is when Victus stumbles in. Erika stares in disbelief. "Victus, of all the frigging bars to show up in..." She turns back to the Ork. "Yeah, he's part of the crew. I'd like to think the 4 Space Marines we've got make up for him. Let's not be hasty about fighting each other, now: we've got plenty of things to kill in our future and there's no reason to go wrecking a mutual chance to get off this hellhole." She turns back to Victus and fixes him with a glare. "Isn't that right, Victus?"

Even after taking a ride in the Kopta, she still wasn't sure how that many orks fit into it. Not that it wasn't cramped; she and Victus had spent the last few minutes wedged between two stinking greenskins. At least the drat thing hadn't just shaken apart in midair. After it landed and she'd finished explaining the orks' presence to an understandably disturbed crew, she surveyed their new acquisitions: one junker ship and a truly massive crowd of half-dead locals. Wonderful. She walked over to the others.

Erika crosses her arms in annoyance. "The trip to the Grasp isn't a foolish errand, Ariston, it's a way off the frigging planet. Besides, I don't think our little fantasy of enacting a possession ritual there is going to work. There's warp anomalies, but it's aligned to Khorne and full of daemons; they won't just stand around and let us enact a ritual dedicated to their mortal enemy. I say we should do the ritual wherever we end up. Anyway, that's why I'm bringing the Orks along; if it didn't involve a brutal fight all the way to the portals, the locals would be clamoring to go there instead of quaking and kissing their charms at its name. And don't worry so much about them; they know there's a fight and loot coming to them at the end of the trip. The Orks remind me quite a bit of the Freebootaz I made occasional deals with before I came to the Vortex. They're reasonable enough. For Orks."

She turns and point in the general direction of the Devourer. "And as for that...vessel. Is it even worth stripping for parts? We certainly can't take all of those crewmembers along without it, and I think we'd have a riot on our hands if we told them all to piss off and started disassembling their home. As much as it pains me to give up anything we've stolen, it might be easier to just hand it over to that Space Marine, Yorial or whatever, and just wash our hands of it."

"Ooooh, yes! I like the sound of that idea, Ariston. I am both fascinated and repulsed by the way Ork technology works. It's so dreadfully ramshackle and hideous, but it works so well for them when it doesn't immediately explode; the madness of it all is so refreshingly awful. Orks violate the basic tenets of reason with everything they touch, and there's nothing I like more than breaking rules. Except for necks, maybe, the cracking sound..."

Pausing to wipe a little drool off her chin, Erika turns to Pandora.

"Sorry, got a little lost there, Slaaneshi thing. Forgot you weren't here earlier. Here's the rundown: after we stole our ship from its unworthy previous owners, some crewmember we were interrogating mentioned two ways off this planet: the spaceport belonging to the guy we nicked the Rust Wave from and The Grasp, a giant hand-shaped...thingy, a few weeks away, which contains portals to other worlds. We were planning on performing a Ritual of Possession there so that I could regain my lost power all the sooner, so that I could in turn leverage that power to assist our little warband into stomping everyone we dislike into a bloody stain. The chance to escape and to locate an active warp disturbance for the ritual seemed too good to pass up...at the time. I'm still unconvinced that it's a good idea not to wait until we've escaped to perform the Ritual, but I suppose Gozer is the expert in such matters."

Erika the Red

Erika had spent most of the downtime barking orders and making sure the crew properly loaded the supplies, taking a few breaks to swing around the new chainsword and get a feel for it. Her spirits were high...at least, until the seas and skies turned red and lightning started crackling down. That didn't seem like a good sign. Neither did Kanro locking the doors. Erika starts moving for cover and glances to her Furian bodyguard. "Serge, is this as bad as it looks?"
