I haven't paid much attention to Dawkins lately, but back when he was writing more about biology and evolution I read a lot of his books. Reading the Selfish Gene at the end of high school inspired me to become a biologist. It's pretty annoying how every single person ever likes to blast it because of the word 'Selfish' when they know absolutely nothing about genetics nor truly understand what he's talking about. That cult of personality stuff is pretty whack though if true. Though I loled at how the article chose the most evil emperor palpatine looking photo of him.

You know in the Lord of the Rings, where Gandalf says that Sauron couldn't imagine that they would want to get rid of a Dark Lord without replacing him? It is kind of like that. Most of the people who are in the Richard Dawkins/new atheist personality cult were people raised in religious, authoritarian environments and they can't imagine getting rid of one hierarchy without replacing it with another. They really do want some source of authority to tell them what their comfortable, static reality is and they can't imagine not having that.

When Nietzsche said "God is Dead", he was only incidentally talking about "God". Most atheists don't really read Nietzsche though, other than for some out-of-context quotes, and I don't think the "new Atheists" have any idea of who Jean-Paul Sartre was and what existentialism is. Existentialism is closer to religion than it is to science, after all, because it says we have to base our understanding of the world on our own, subjective experiences, and not on any type of "objective" metaphysics, including empiricism.
