It's unfortunate that Tom Cruise seems to have the same taste in sci-fi as me but if he didn't a couple good sci-fi movies would have never gotten made because he puts a huge chunk of his own money into getting them made because he loves the stories.

I'm not sure Edge of Tomorrow should be on the list but on the flip side watching a massive truck roadkill tom cruise was pretty fun.

I avoided Oblivion when it was in the theater because of Cruise & I wish I hadn't been such a poo poo about it. The book version of Solaris is the best version imo but if you've gotta pick a film version I think the 72 version is better than the 02 version.

w/r/t books Lem's other stuff is even better than Solaris. apparently the success of solaris kind of haunted him because everyone wanted him to write mind bending cerebral sci fi when he just wanted to write zany fables about godlike robots and hallucinogenic air

i really loving wish that had gotten made instead of the david lynch version :smithicide:

that was going to be Orson loving Welles on the left, btw

Jodorowsky's Dune is a pitch-perfect example of how something can seem perfect on paper but as such is destined to fail in execution.

I mean look at that Final Fantasy concept art you posted. Do you really think that even with the most talented costume designers of the 70s the finished product would look half-as bitching as that picture? Of course not.

If I enjoy a sci-fi film I enjoy a sci-fi film & I don't try to overthink it because I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. There's not enough compelling story driven sci-fi being made so I will take what I can get.

Throwing A.I. on the pile because I think it is flawed but worth a watch & is largely misunderstood imho.

The book is really good and no one has managed to truly capture it on film. Also, the book is very short so unless you are illiterate & can't get your hands on an audiobook version then you might as well just read the book.

No seriously A.I. is fantastic in many many ways and is flawed but worth watching anyway. One thing I love is that despite being very forward-thinking in its setting and world-building A.I. actually thought internet encyclopedias voiced by Robin Williams would be a festival attraction in the future

Idiocracy is massively overrated and falls into the same thematic camp as watching the Kardashians or Honey Boo Boo-- you're only watching because you want to laugh at dumb people and feel smarter than them. There are some very inspired gags about the future of consumer culture left unchecked by intellectual regulation though-- "Welcome to Costco, I love you"

Oh just recommend Ender's Game they're both porn for intellectual welter-weights who want to indulge in a fantasy of being the saviors of society due to their own innate brilliance.

Maybe you would like Doomsday Book. The first segment is not so great but the other two are just fine. The one with the Buddha robot is pretty to look at and the one with the end of the world is funny.

Also the Prestige was a good movie so maybe you would enjoy it too. I think it counts as a bit scifi but not in an aliens and robots way.
