I was in Portland a month ago on business for the first time and was completely blown away by how large the homeless population was.

Not just large though...

They also are more noticibly aggressive, assholish, and unbelievably entitled and outright expect/demand handouts. I felt like a Republican by the time I left.

Other than that Portland is a cool rear end city. I enjoyed myself.

They have a lot of programs and support for homeless so a lot of them flock there. Frankly I wish they would do more and siphon more from Seattle.

Not all, no. Only elderly, albeit disheveled black woman stopped me. I assumed she was asking for directions.

After I said I had no cash on me, she without hesitation asked if I had a debit card to get money from.

I scoffed and walked away.

there was a dude in my neighborhood a few years back with this sob story about how he was going to jail unless he could get to his job, needed transit money, just got out on coke charges, etc. i talked with him a bit and gave him a smoke cause i try not to be an overt rear end in a top hat. he asked if i had cash, i didn't, and then asked if i could go to an atm to pull some out and i told him i only had like 20 bucks in the bank (not a lie at all) and he still kept pushing.

ive seen that dude every other week for the past two years pushin the same god drat bike and telling the same god drat story

gently caress that dude

I don't think Portland's problem compares to the bum town that was going on in Eugene during occupy wallstreet. The hippy government down there allowed that to go on for way to long and then had massive clean up costs after the fact.

ZIronically i saw a number of stories in Portland papers after i got home about how local residents want the Portland PD to stop harassing the homeless.

Its......weird. KEEP POTLAND WEIRD GUYUS.

I shared a house in Portland one summer that ended up being occupied by five drifters and their dog. A female housemate invited them to come live with us and I heard she ended up marrying one of the fellows, named CR(backwards K)T or "cricket". Highlights of that summer include:

- The entire house reeking of BO because they did not bathe
- Them egging on a 10-year-old neighborhood kid to smoke rolled up newspapers and drink wine
- Them stealing wine from Trader Joe's that was literally a block away from the house
- Receiving a phone call from a spaced-out girl somewhere in southern california asking to speak with "goblin". "this is the house for weary travelers, isn't it?" *click*
- Finding a strange man in the kitchen after returning from a family trip to europe; being unironically asked "did they have any good dumpsters there?"
- The map of southeast portland dumpsters on our kitchen wall
- Spoils of said dumpsters (rotting fruit) stuffed in the refrigerator and sink
- Discovering that the "broken" washing machine they found and hauled back to the house is only leaking because they tried to seal the connection with elmer's glue
- Being asked what this writhing mass of little white things in the compost bin we stole but did not properly bury is
- Being asked to kill said maggots because "we're vegans"

Get to know your roommates before you move in, kids. But honestly I was young and don't regret a thing.

Edit: I almost forgot:

- The day I thought they were finally leaving only to have them return several hours later because the dog wouldn't jump on the train
