Imagine you see a bee for the first time ever. You don't know what it is, so you don't know that it can sting you. You walk up to it, and start to play with it. The bee then stings you, which hurts you.

The next day you see another bee. It looks slightly different, but you think about what happened the previous day, and realize that it's probably not a good idea to go near it. What you don't realize is that it's a carpenter bee, which are widely less aggressive than normal bees, but looks fairly similar. To the standard population, they would pass as just another bee. They're not as aggressive, but you're naturally just as scared of it as you would be a normal bee.

It's essentially the same concept. Fedoras are widely worn by socially awkward idiots in Western World (Just like most bees are more aggressive than carpenter bees). While you know that not all of them are going to be socially awkward idiots, you still won't go up to them and start conversation because you know that there's a high chance that they will be socially awkward, and an idiot. (Just like the carpenter bee metaphor). You stay away from them because it runs a high chance of putting you in a situation that you simply don't want to be in.

The same concept runs true with why westerners often view people who wear saggy pants and a backwards hat to be "ghetto" or "gangbangers".

Firstly GBS is not the entire western world, it isn’t even most of the western world. It is a subset of the western world mainly in the US of white middle class males aged 15-25 ± 3 years who are socially inept.

With that being said, no one outside of that group hates fedoras, most don’t even care or have an opinion.

Additionally the above group of people love to believe they are better than everyone around them and use anything they can to try to show it. “I may be a fat, awkward, socially inept atheist basement dweller who spends all his time on the internet, but at least I don’t wear a fedora.” That is what I think of anytime this neckbeard/fedora topic comes up. They are trying to turn the negative attention from themselves and project it on to someone else because they are just as much of a loser as they think someone who wears a fedora is.

That coupled with the circlejerking that GBS does for cheap laughs has created a momentum for “hating on fedoras and/or neckbeards”, the same way GBS circlejerks itself with “stepping on a Lego is worse than death”, and “IKEA furniture I'd hard to assemble" means it will only continue to gain popularity whether it is truly believed or not.

check this guy out getting all wordy trying to defend his fedora

It goes against the "one of us" thing. Ie. if you don't look like everyone else and dress and speak like everyone else, you get the stink eye which is supposed to illicit compliance into behaving like everyone else. People are conditioned to shame people who act out of the norm so they are themselves reconditioned to come back to what is "normal." Whatever the hell that is.

Example:
1 - Someone walks around with a baseball cap = normal. (Millions of people wear baseball caps) No objections from most people.
2 - Someone wears a dildo on their head. That person is going to be gawked at and shamed into removing said dildo from their head. Why? Nobody wears dildos on their head. That data is outside of most peoples framing of "normal" and therefore offensive.
3 - Someone wears a fedora on their head. Not many people wear fedoras anymore, so this again illicits the correction to normal behavior from most people. Exactly as they are conditioned.

In short, I don't give a gently caress what you wear. Wear what makes you comfortable and or feel good.

ITT - People who care what other people wear due to their conditioning to oppose that which is not "normal" -- Ask yourself, does what someone else wears effect you personally? If not, shut the gently caress up please and move on with your life. Your concerns are wasted on this nonsense.
