It's around the start of the season, which means it's time for this again! What is a "Moon Poll"? A moon poll is a goon-created computer ranking of college football teams. In past years, my understanding is that they usually limited their focus to teams in FBS, but there's enough data for at least some systems to be able to rate pretty much every college with a varsity football team (except that one New England conference in DIII that doesn't play OOC games). I'll warn you that if you do this you're likely to see undefeated teams from lower divisions sneaking into the overall top 40, though. Being computer rankings, they're usually all over the map in a hilarious fashion for much of the season but will settle on something close to a consensus near the end. Incidentally, I have no idea who coined "moon poll" but I love the phrasing. Last year's thread is here and is still on the live forums. (Older threads: 2012 2011) How do I make a Moon Poll? You're almost certainly going to need an algorithm of some sort. You can program it yourself, or work out something in Excel. As for your criteria, you can really pick anything you like, though most conventional systems don't use much more than who beat who and by how many points (and indeed the official BCS computers only used who beat who because reasons). David Wilson has a pretty substantial listing of a bunch of existing systems; most of them keep their formulas secret but some of them clearly explain the math behind what they're doing, if you want something to work from and can follow it. Peter Wolfe, whose rankings If you need stats, I still haven't been able to find a good source for those since the NCAA changed the way their site worked and a lot of our polls disappeared.  Someone clever could probably figure out how to scrape data from ESPN or wherever, but I'm not that clever someone. Please let me know if you've got any sources to add—the two links I have now only have win-loss and points data, which isn't very helpful if you want to base your rankings on yardage or turnover margin or cumulative number of fans played in front of per official attendance numbers or whatever.How do I get this stuff into a post without it looking like garbage? I totally forgot about this last year due to that whole not-actually-running-my-system thing, but this handy tool proved useful to some folks back in 2012. I'm bringing back my parked in conference call moon poll. It started as an experiment in what kind of ranking I would get if one took the sabermetric concept of Pythagorean Expectation and applied it to college football scoring. I originally weighed points the same which produces a great moon poll on its own - for example here's the pythagorean top 10 from last year - 1. Florida State 2. Louisville 3. Alabama 4. Baylor 5. Oregon 6. Michigan State 7. Bowling Green 8. Wisconsin 9. Ohio State 10. Utah State The current pythagorean expectation I use is PF^2.42/(PF^2.42 + PA^2.8) so that points allowed are weighed heavier. Over time I've made some adjustments to take more factors into account: - Subtract defensive yards allowed from offensive yards, multiply this times .001, and add to score - a way to penalize bad offenses more than anything - Subtract turnovers from takeaways, and adjust so a turnover +/- of +8 equals one win. This probably overstates a luck value but screw it. - Add .13 for a win, .05 extra for beating an AP Top 25 team - Drop .15 for a loss, .09 extra for losing to a FCS team - I then go in the weeds with my strength of schedule. I work up my own strength of schedule by averaging the to-this-point score of every team's opponent, and then converting that score to a rank - strongest is 1 (often that's Washington). I then award a bonus on a sliding scale of the rank's percentage of the 75th percentile of teams in FBS (this year, 96) so that strongest SOS gets a 33% bonus, #2 gets a little less, and starting with rank 97 actually penalize. There's no floor for the penalty. This doesn't do much for teams with tough schedules and mediocre records (often that's Washington) so there may be room for improvement So, I ended up with a more sedate top 10 of this - 1. Florida State 2. Missouri 3. Auburn 4. Michigan State 5. South Carolina 6. Stanford 7. Alabama 8. Oklahoma 9. Louisville 10. Baylor This year I'm thinking of creating two polls - one for power 5 teams (where Group of 5 losses count equal to FCS losses) and the other for Group of 5 teams (where Power 5 wins count as Top 25 wins, extra if said team is actually top 25) - and removing the SOS adjustments. This'll be my third moon poll season. The first season there was a really nice set of machine-readable FBS/FCS data straight from the NCAA website. Then it went away for no reason, and I went to an FBS-only source at cfbstats.com. Now that's gone away, and I've finally gotten irritated enough to learn regular expressions and write a scraper for the NCAA human-readable scores website. On the down side, I have to manually copy/paste each new week's html into a text file, but on the plus side it now includes FCS again. Anyway, my poll doesn't start working until all the teams are connected so I won't have numbers to post for a while. But if for some reason the data in the OP goes away, I'll post my scraped stuff as a backup.

Yeah, my poll starts out being heavily weighted towards margin of victory in the beginning but works out to weigh record more after about week 5 or so. Until then it's basically a listing of how every team's cupcake slate went.

I tend to have to rewire everything based on my data source. This year it's data scraped from the NCAA website, so I'm back to including both FBS and FCS teams on an equal footing. (Well, formally it ranks any teams which has been involved in at least two games against an FBS or FCS team.) The poll randomly iterates over the games of the season repeatedly, adjusting ratings each time to minimize the difference between actual and expected margins of victory, with a roll-off such that (say) a 14 point victory is about twice as impressive as a 7 point victory while there's almost no difference between a 40 point margin and an 80 point margin. At this point in the season the results are a little preposterous, but hey, that's the fun of a moon poll: code:

FBS and FCS ranked on an equal footing. (Technically the data source and algorithm will result in any team which has played 3 or more games against FBS or FCS opponents being ranked.) Some of the screwiness such as Coastal Carolina's high ranking is simply due to the fact that "undefeated and blew out its cupcakes" is something that good teams do, and thus those teams will be ranked highly until enough games have been played to establish that those cupcakes were genuinely terrible. code:

This is probably unsustainable, starting with one of Bama and Miss State coming down next week, and I expect to see other conferences' defensive/offensive juggernauts roll towards the top in October. That includes Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU if they keep that defense up, Stanford, BYU, and probably Marshall too.EDIT 10/13 - Posted corrected poll. Some data from Ohio University was being entered as Ohio State, plus my SOS calculations had USC playing Florida State, not Fresno State. Oopsie. Hayden Matrix Ratings, Week Five It's baaaaack So, yeah. After a season of completely failing to run this thing, I finally went and fixed the spreadsheet, and it's actually giving me results that aren't total nonsense, somehow. Well... the top of the list looks more or less okay, at least. Conference play will probably clear out some of the weirdness; I'm honestly surprised it's as coherent as it is in week five. In seasons past, I only ranked FBS teams, with FCS collectively represented as a dummy team that typically placed a couple of spots below the very bottom. This year, I've decided to upgrade the system a bit by also ranking all of FCS as well, with the dummy team now representing all teams outside Division I entirely. With only two other polls in this thread, it's hard to get that much mileage out of a comparison—if you guys want me to try it anyway, I can give it a shot, but it probably won't be as interesting as back when we had like a dozen in 2012. Hayden Matrix Rankings, Week Six The weekend of shakeups has had some interesting effects on the poll, as you might expect. Auburn is apparently head and shoulders over everyone else—in fairness, three of the five teams they've beaten are also in the top 25, so this isn't really that surprising. More unexpected are the three unbeaten power teams outside the top ten (FSU at #13, Arizona at #20, and GT outside of the top 25 at #29) and how little some teams moved after losing this weekend (especially Oklahoma and Alabama, who are still in the top six for now). I wonder if NCAA is cracking down on stats websites or something? If so that's kind of sleazy. They're a nonprofit overseeing sports at institutions which are largely taxpayer-funded. I've written a scraper that pulls in scores (and can provide CSVs if needed), but stats beyond that would not be trivial. That said, in weeks like this, college football is the best. Hayden Matrix Rankings, Week Seven Mississippi State is ranked #1, which is not something I think I ever thought would happen, like... ever. Despite losing to MSU by 15, Auburn is still holding onto the #2 spot and is actually less than a full rating point behind #1—probably due to their ridiculously high rating before this week. Ole Miss gained rating points by beating A&M, but the Bulldogs passed them up, so they slide back to #3. I have no idea what Georgia is doing at #4 above Baylor, Notre Dame and FSU. Lots of notable idiosyncrasies: there's Florida State's #6, presumably due to lackluster wins against a slate which is not exactly fantastic. There's #16 Tennessee, which actually makes me wonder if there's a bug in the code or in the raw data - presumably the close loss to Georgia is lifting them up? My data source is just a list of game results from the NCAA website. This includes all games that involve Division 1 teams, which pulls in a bunch of lower division teams as well. To try to prevent those from cluttering things, I only listed teams that had played at least 6 FBS/FCS games. So teams that had only played 5 such games were missed in the final printout (but not from the actual algorithm). I re-printed with 5 games as the cutoff and edited the post to fix it, and Ohio State is #25.

Hayden Matrix Rankings, Week Eight This is apparently the year that the SEC devours all, or something. I'm starting to suspect that no matter how the SEC West race shakes out we're going to end up with quite a few teams from that division in the top ten. (The Sagarin ratings look similarly odd. Reading the Callaghan et al. paper, I'm thinking it's because the SEC West plus Georgia constitutes a "nearly undefeated subgraph"—something similar happened in, for example, 2001, where computers will often stick Tennessee at #2 and Florida and LSU in much higher positions than one might expect. This season is more extreme, though, because the group of eight teams I'm referring to literally has one loss as a whole.  )Florida State is apparently stuck in hell. Also Auburn got above Mississippi State and Ole Miss again. Right, it knows who played who, so underlying graph structures will tend to have an effect. That's probably why Marshall's doing so well in mine - it's king of its local subgraph which happens to be full of terrible teams and only loosely coupled to better subgraphs. After the NCG last year and the collapse of the East early this season there was a fair bit of chatter that the SEC was finally reverting to something less dominant. But at this point we're probably back to the status quo.

I lied. Thoughts - 1. Ole Miss lapping the field is part having played more games and part that #1 scoring defense. 2. My poll had a crush on Stanford and now it's over. 3. The Temple/ECU situation has finally fixed itself. And look at Georgia Southern lurking just below the top 25. 4. Interestingly, Ole Miss dropped only one spot, and that was more a function of Mississippi State gaining ground. LSU however, moved up quite a bit. Florida State's still unimpressive in both this poll and Hayden's, which is satisfying. At this point I'm going to quit apologizing on behalf of the poll for Marshall. They might actually be good. Maybe not #7 in the country good, but legit. code:

This is the week my moon poll gets moony. 1. Ole Miss remains #1 since even with the loss they're still the #1 scoring defense and still feature a top 10 strength of schedule. A second loss might not even bump them off the top 5 due to the strength of Auburn. 2. Florida State loses ground to TCU and Michigan State. Not sure why MSU did so. 3. I like to say my poll is based on a principle of "least internal inconsistency", but there's a lot of circles of suck this year so it ends up looking a little screwy. Ole Miss in particular just can't help sticking near the top despite two losses. Those losses were close, and were versus reasonably good teams, so apparently this particular math says they still make more sense at #3 than anyone else. A&M and South Carolina continue to crater, and in A&M's case a bad win dropped them. Florida State sucks. Interestingly, a lot of these idiosyncrasies (compared to the human polls) are also reflected in the Hayden poll. Of course, this means we're better than the voters. code:

I considered going back to my older poll that just pulled one stat and I coudl do manually, but... you know what, if the NCAA doesn't want people playing with statistics, fine, whatever, saves me an hour a week I can watch cat videos on youtube with.

Yeah, I'm just using scores, nothing special beyond that. You'd think the NCAA, being a "nonprofit" "academic" "student" organization wouldn't go out of its way to obfuscate data, but here we are.
