I've seen games go perfect for 12 innings all for naught. I've seen no-hitters pitched on illicit drugs. Homer streaks lasting eight games and 20 run losses. I've seen pennants won and seasons collapse. All these memories will be lost in time. Like tears in the rain.

Time to die.

Today in Baseball History
  • 1940 - Left fielder Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox pitches the last two innings in a 12-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Williams allows three hits and one run but strikes out Tiger slugger Rudy York.
  • 1943 - The Philadelphia Athletics drop their 20th game in a row, losing to Chicago 6-5. This ties the American League record.
  • 1951 - In another of Bill Veeck's legendary PR stunts, "Fans Managers' Night," a thousand fans behind the Browns dugout are given yes and no placards to vote on decisions by the Browns coaches. The fans coach the Browns to a 5-3 win over Philadelphia.
  • 1989 - After weeks of legal wrangling, Commissioner Bart Giamatti permanently bans Pete Rose from baseball for his alleged gambling on major league games. Although the five-page document signed by both parties includes no formal findings, Giamatti says that he considers Rose's acceptance of the ban to be a no-contest plea to the charges.

Okay, cool, looks like I was right. The As and Angels would play with the AL West title on the line. The loser would be the second Wild Card team and they'd play the Mariners for that spot.

What a heartbreaker it would be if the Mariners won that game. Tied for first in the Division and not going to the playoffs.

There are two wild cards. The Angels are 90% likely to get the first one and Oakland will have simply won the AL West (they will not receive a wild card).

The Mariners/Detroit/Royals/Yankees/someone else I am probably missing are all vying for the second wild card (either Detroit or the Royals will win their division, so only one of them will complete). Baltimore probably has their division locked up.

I know nothing about the NL though, sorry.

Iwakuma is very very not sharp today.

What is going on with the Mariners pitchers in Boston? Felix was off and only lasted 5.2, Chris Young was really off, lasted 3.2 and now Iwakuma's thrown 30+ pitches in the first inning.

And he gave up 3 runs!

Iwakuma grimaced and grabbed his side/rear end covering 1st after his last pitch during his last start, hope this isn't related :(

The umpire's strike zone has been tending towards the weird. Not necessarily bad (other than a particularly poor instance of the 3-0 Courtesy Strike to Panik) and not favoring one team or anything, but he's had some weird ones (not giving Strasburg a pitch on the lower outside corner only to later on in that at bat ring Blanco up on a pitcher that was lower and more outside).

Arguing balls and strikes is the only thing that makes sense... though that still doesn't explain why Peavy in particular was arguing.

Seriously, what happened to the Mariners starters after that 8-1 homestand? Felix has had back to back starts of barely 5 innings, Chris Young couldn't get out of the 4th and now Iwakuma couldn't get out of the 3rd.

Are they just too tired from it being August?
