Will there be another version of the game or even sequel?

This is being treated as the climax of the Arena games and a very big deal. I would not doubt there might be more, but don't be surprised if it is the last one.

What are all the super cool new features?

-9 new characters, meaning the cast has almost doubled in size.
-Shadow versions of most of the cast.
-All old characters receive new dial combos, SP moves, and Awakening SPs.
-Rebalanced gameplay
-S Hold System, a beginner friendly mechanic where the A button is held for a special and will transform into higher level moves the longer it is held (Skill Boost, SP Move, Awakening SP, Instant Kill).
-Skill Boost SP Moves, using two buttons and 75 SP allows you to do a stronger SP Move.
-Entirely new story mode
-Golden Arena, an RPG like mode where players take characters and level them up and gain new abilities by winning fights.
-Score Attack mode has been revamped like BBCP and now has four different routes for you to take on in multiple difficulties.
-An online lobby for players to interact with each other.

CHARACTERS
Old and Busted

Yu Narukami (Sister Complex Kingpin of Steel)
Voice Actors: Daisuke Namikawa/Johnny Yong Bosch
Themes: Reach Out to the Truth (P4 Arena ver.), Reach Out to the Truth (First Battle) (Shadow)
Persona: Izanagi, Izanagi-no-Okami (IK)
Instant Kill: Myriad Truths
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still trying to enjoy his vacation, Yu is jumping into the new G-1 Grand Prix tournament. Yu is a well-rounded character that is super beginner friendly. He has tools for just about any situation, Zio is a good projectile, SB Raging Lion is a great air tool, his DP is amazing, and both of his supers are very useful, especially Cross Slash. Yu's new SP move, Shiden Issen, is very useful as well, it is OTG-capable and useable even off of other supers like Cross Slash. A new special which is quick and also good for continuing combos. And a new Deadly Rave-esque Awakening SP which is damaging and very stylish, but you need 150 SP to do the thing.

In general, Yu has gotten stronger than he already was in P4A due to his enhanced damage, comboability, and variety of tools growing more. Expect to see several Yu's online and in tourneys.

Yosuke Hanamura (Captain Ressentiment)
Voice Actors: Shotaro Morikubo/Yuri Lowenthal
Themes: The Hero from Junes, ZONE TIME (Shadow)
Persona: Jiraiya
Instant Kill: Brave Blade
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still trying to fight boredom and minimum wage, Yosuke has gone to investigate the midnight channel's resurrection again. Yosuke is a rushdown character taken to a literal extreme. A lot of his playstyle is taking advantage of his insane speed to confuse, mixup, and air to air combat. His damage isn't great, his range sucks, and wake up options are not lighting the world on fire. When you play Yosuke the one thing you are aiming to do, is outmaneuver the opponent and catch them in fast and lengthy combos with pure speed. To do this Yosuke has his Moonsault to cross up the opponent, Dash Spring which lets him zoom across the screen in no time, and Sukukaja as an awakening SP which allows him to move even faster and do combos he was unable to before.

In Ultimax, Yosuke got a bit more HP, a new special, V-Slasher, that is good for extending combos, and a new super that is only useable in Sukukaja mode, Shooting Star. The Super costs 0 SP to use, but immediately ends Sukukaja, so it is best used to end your sukukaja combo if you can do so.

Chie Satonaka (The Carnivore Who's Discarded Womanhood)
Voice Actors: Yui Horie/Erin Fitzgerald
Themes: Like a Dragon, Backside of the TV (Shadow)
Persona: Tomoe Gozen
Instant Kill: Galactic Punt
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still feeling yet never thinking, Chie has joined the group on the investigation of the Midnight Channel and the Red Fog. Chie is another rushdown character, although she is nothing like Yosuke. She's meant to get in on the opponent and just beat them down as quickly as possible with her huge damaging specials and SP moves, deadly wake up tactics, and even a super mode which makes her even stronger. Chie's only faults are her short range and poor defensive options, she can't fight against anyone from across the screen and if she gets locked down, her only real defense is her High Counter.

That being said, on top of all of her great normals and specials, she's gotten quite a bit of stuff going into Ultimax as well. Now Chie has both a lunge to cover distance and a freezing move to let her freeze an opponent from mid-range. On top of that Chie hasn't gotten any new SP moves or Awakening SPs, but Power Charge has changed quite a bit. Now she can stack power charges up to three times. The more they are stacked the more the color of the meter changes and the faster the meter depletes, but the stronger her attacks become. It goes Red to Yellow to Blue and that's it, Chie has become a monster at blue, but only for a short time.

Yukiko Amagi (The Unconquerable Snow Black)
Voice Actors: Ami Koshimizu/Amanda Winn Lee
Themes: Princess Amagi-ya, Castle (Shadow)
Persona: Konohana Sakuya
Instant Kill: Full Bloom
Traiers: JP, ENG

Still trying to cook better, Yukiko's following her friends along for the ride. Yukiko is a zoning character through and through, but she also relies heavily on her Persona to do it well, moreso than other characters. Yukiko can toss her fans and also have Sakuya jump across the screen to attack the opponent in tandem, use agi attacks to keep them at bay while she jumps in to combo them, and even do a lot of damage by using fire breaks and boosts in conjunction with Sakuya. However if you break Sakuya, then Yukiko's left rather helpless and loses all of her momentum. She's not beginner friendly, she requires knowledge of the game's mechanics and matchups to get the most out of her and proper use of the persona and normal combos which already aren't very damaging with Fire Break and Boost.

In Ultimax, Yukiko has not changed that much. She's gained two new moves, one of which is only available at Fire Boost LV 6 (Which can now Stack up to LV 9), Radiant Phoenix, Sakuya plows across the stage (SB Version blows through projectiles) to hit the enemy. The other is Fire Dance, where Sakuya knocks the opponent away with fire, good for gaining distance. Ain't nothing changed around here.

Kanji Tatsumi (The Bloodcurdling Beefcake Emperor)
Voice Actors: Tomokazu Seki/Matthew Mercer
Themes: A Pure-Hearted Beast, Sauna (Shadow), Muscle Blues (Kanji vs Shadow Kanji)
Persona: Take-Mikazuchi
Instant Kill: The Man Series: Brofist
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still a pure-hearted numbskull, Kanji's been caught in the Red Fog with others and trying to figure out what exactly is happening. Kanji's a grappler, warts and all. His gameplan is to get in on the opponent and get his hands on them with command grabs so he can just dunk all over their health. To this end he has an air command grab which launches him across the screen, two different versions of the command grab that have different properties altogether, and an awakening SP command grab which can do over half a health bar's worth of damage depending on the opponent. However due to many factors such as heavily telegraphed moves, being slow (Despite being surprisingly mobile for a grappler), and easy to zone out Kanji ended up being on the lower end of the cast in Arena.

In Ultimax, Kanji's gotten some stuff to help him out. Now if Take-Mikazuchi is broken Kanji can still use his ground command grab and Awakening SP. Although when the former is used he only tosses the opponent across the screen with no follow up. Awakening SP however will follow up with "rear end Whoopin', Tatsumi Style", so it's not completely worthless to use. However if Take-Mikazuchi comes back in the middle of either of those moves (Read: Before the moves ends or the rear end-Whoopin', Tatsumi Style begins) the move will be performed as it normally does. Standing C now causes paralysis when hit by the opponent and is a bit faster so it's more practical to use. Cruel Attack is now useable in the air and Kanji's new special, Primal Force, has projectile armor on it and zooms across the screen. What A Pain! has been nerfed now though and is no longer as stupid good as it was before, so watch out with that one.

Kuma/Teddie (The Beast in Heat)
Voice Actors: Kappei Yamaguchi/Sam Riegel
Themes: Teddie Circus!, Borderline of Madness (Shadow)
Persona: Kintoki-Douji
Instant Kill: Kamui Kablooey
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still hitting on everything and anything, Teddie has been stuck outside in the red fog with the others as well. Teddie is a tricky character to use because he's got pretty good normals and tools to use even for zoning, although the meat of his gameplan is focused on what item is currently out which is risky business if you don't have the one you want. Teddie's high-low mixup is also practically nonexistent since his only overhead is his all out attack which is slow. You need to make good work of the item order, Persona, and Teddie's normals to get the most out of him.

In Ultimax, Teddie's gotten some new items, a new SP move, and a new awakening SP. First item is a hopping robot that jumps forward depending on where it lands and has a certain of jumps before it leaves the screen or it can eat a projectile. A stereo which will activate upon landing and try to hit for a while. Scooter keys which cause a scooter to dash in from one side of the screen then the other. An invisible robot which disappears and moves forward across the screen to hit the opponent and reappear on hit. Teddie's new SP move lets him toss 3 random items over the stages and his new awakening SP, Nihil Hand, is great for combo ends and damage.

Naoto Shirogane (The 2000 IQ Killjoy Detective)
Voice Actors: Romi Park/Valerie Arem
Themes: Seeker of Truth, Secret Base (Shadow)
Persona: Sukuna-Hikona
Instant Kill: Judge of Hell
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still awkwardly shooting off at the mouth, Naoto is helping her friends out with the Shadow Operatives' capture and the mystery behind Sho. Naoto is a mix between zoning and rushdown, she's got strong zoning tools with her bullets and Megido traps, while her Double Fangs skill and Persona normals helps her on getting in to attack. Her main goal though is the Fate Gauge, after dropping the gauge from 13 to 0 if Naoto hits the opponent with either Mudoon or Hamaon SP moves she will instantly kill the opponent.

In Ultimax, Naoto's been changed in strange ways. Now she has a reload mechanic that limits her bullet usage. Mudoon has far more startup now so it's practically worthless even with air unblockability. However Naoto has gotten some buffs in Ultimax as well, mostly due to the addition of SB SP Moves and now a buff to her health. SB Hamaon tracks, so if you're looking to get in a quick kill that's your move. Double Fangs is now useable in air as well and it's a solid air to air tool for Naoto. SB Raid allows Naoto fire 5 shots instead of three letting you rack up more damage from an easy combo. Her new Blight skill is also a solid anti-air, being fast and good for jump ins. However Naoto in Ultimax really shines in Shadow Naoto where all of the benefits she gets from something like Shadow Berserk are crazy (More on Shadow forms later).

Mitsuru Kirijo (The Imperious Queen of Executions)
Voice Actors: Rie Tanaka/Tara Platt
Themes: Missions for the Brilliant Executioner, Shadow (Shadow), Wiping All Out (vs. Yukari, Aigis)
Persona: Artemisia
Instant Kill: Niflheim
Trailers: JP, ENG
Still being a huge doormat for everyone, Mitsuru has been captured with Akihiko, Aigis, and Fuuka. Mitsuru is a balanced charge character with too many good moves, normals, and furious attacks. Mitsuru's gameplan is to stay at mid-screen and just pressure you with her rapier and Persona attacks. Mitsuru was one of the dumbest characters in Arena, as of Ultimax she has been nerfed heavily. She's received a damage nerf, D Bufula hits once instead of 3 times, some of her moves fatal recovery now, and a few moves have been made either harder to combo or not comboable at all. This being said Mitsuru is still good in Ultimax and has been given more stuff to be good.

In Ultimax, Mitsuru now has a new quick special Tentarafoo, which upon being fast as hell hits low and can freeze the opponent and cause confusion. Some of her normals have been made dash-cancellable, Bufula no longer appears off stage so you can corner combo with it easier, her throw is now untechable until the opponent hits the ground so she can combo from it even easier, and Bufudyne is still air unblockable. Mitsuru's no longer super good, but she's still a strong character.

Akihiko Sanada (The Two-Fisted Protein Junkie)
Voice Actors: Hikaru Midorikawa/Liam O' Brien
Themes: The Wandering Wolf, Crisis (Shadow)
Persona: Caesar
Instant Kill: Earth Breaker
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still half-naked with a cape, Akihiko has been kidnapped by mysterious forces. Akihiko returns with his rushdown/rekka style of boxing and power up mechanics. Akihiko runs a Cyclone mechanic which means he must chain specials together, the more specials are chained together the higher the Cyclone level will raise and the more Akihiko's special will gain new properties like wall bounce and more hitstun, Cyclone now goes up as high as Level 5. Among the many rushdown tools Akihiko has like kill rush and his boxing sways and ducks, Caesar can suck up opponents towards him.

In Ultimax, Akihiko's very much the same, but he's gotten a few new tools. SB Maziodyne causes paralysis even on block, a new skill Sonic Punch gives Akihiko another move to chain together with his existing skills, the additional cyclone levels give Akihiko more potential at higher damaging combos and SB Thunder Fists have a hitbox.

Aigis (The Heartless Armed Angel)
Voice Actors: Maaya Sakamoto/Karen Strassman
Themes: Heartful Cry (P4 Arena ver.), Master of Shadow (Shadow), Wiping All Out (vs. Yukari, Mitsuru)
Persona: Pallas Athena, Palladion (Instant Kill)
Instant Kill: Heritage Liberator Palladion
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still trying to make friends with everyone, Aigis has been kidnapped and used as bait to lead the Investigation Team to a mysterious puppet master. Aigis is a character with zoning tools, but she is predominately a rushdown character. The goal with Aigis is to build up the Orgia Mode meter so she can activate it and gain a ton of rushdown tools, movement options, and new moves. Generally you will set up an opponent and then combo them for more than half of their health as Aigis' like to do.

In Ultimax, Aigis has not changed much. She has a new air command grab SP move that is okay, 7th Gen Radical Cannon is now useable in air which is great for even more damaging combos, and most of her good stuff is still very good like j.C. She's also gotten a very situational super mode, Extreme Orgia Mode, which is only useable when persona broken, ammo empty, overheated, and you need 150 SP to activate it. When activated Persona cards, Ammo, and Orgia gauge will restore immediately, damage will be increased by 1.2, and Aigis can boost in the air four times.

Labrys (Yasogami's Steel Council President)
Voice Actors: Ayana Taketatsu/Cindy Robinson
Themes: Spirited Girl, The Almighty (Shadow)
Persona: Ariadne
Instant Kill: Weaver's Art: Inquisition
Trailers: JP, ENG

Now with a spiffy new persona, Labrys is diving into Yasogami with Yukari to help her new friends out and save Mitsuru and Co. Labrys is a rushdown character, but she doesn't have amazing tools to do so with. She's very momentum based, once you pop you can't stop otherwise you're gonna eat poo poo for it. Labrys' biggest help in dishing out damage is her axe levels. The more Labrys hits, the higher her axe levels go starting from Green at the start of the match. Axe Levels go from Gray -> Blue -> Green -> Yellow -> Red, at Red is when Labrys can just stomp all over the opponents health with axe moves. The biggest problem with Labrys though is she is very susceptible to rushdown and zoning, if she gets put on the defensive it is hard for her to get out of it as she has no meterless reversals and her axe levels will drop if she is inactive in offense.

In Ultimax, Labrys has gotten a tool to help her out, but she still has poor defensive abilities and not much in the way of changes, in fact the loctests have kind of her made her into a punching bag for nerfs that she didn't need. Weaver Art's Jewel is a good tool to use for wakeup as Labrys and an okay combo tool as well since Labrys can dash cancel out of it immediately, D and SB versions drop to the floor to hit low, that's all. She's not great and if you use her Shadow Version you are begging for a bad time.

Elizabeth (The Lethal Elevator Attendant)
Voice Actors: Miyuki Sawashiro/Tara Platt
Themes: Battle Hymn of Souls
Persona: Thanatos
Instant Kill: Megidolaon
Trailers: JP, ENG

Still an omnipresent airhead, Elizabeth is back doing who knows what. Liz is a very unorthodox character in that she focuses more on controlling the screen and smart decisions, moreso than the rest of the cast. She has long-range normals, zoning tools, a way to get into awakening mode and recover from it while remaining in it just as quickly, she can stack status effects and invigorate can grant her constant use of SP skills and Skill Boosts. Elizabeth has many drawbacks though, a ton of them. She has low health, her movement is average, her combos are more dependent on moving others than they are herself, she NEEDS Thanatos or else she cannot hope to mount an offense, Invigorate is her main way of getting SP as she does not obtain it from conventional methods like the rest of the cast, she requires a risky setup of being in awakening to be a threat, and some of her skills and normals are very situational/character-specific in their usage (Magarudyne chief among them).

In Ultimax, Liz has gotten a bit of help, but much like Labrys it's only like a few things. Liz's skills now change properties and become more powerful when she enters awakening mode. Yes all of them, even air versions of some of the moves. Now Liz also has a counter move, Randomizer, which inflicts Negative Penalty on anyone who tries to hit her in the counter state.

Shadow Labrys (The Raging Bull of Destruction)
Voice Actors: Same as Labrys
Themes: Shadows of the Labyrinth
Persona: Asterius
Instant Kill: Labyrinthos Gate
Trailers: JP, ENG

Back and better than ever, Shadow Labrys is taking her bull and wrecking everything. Shadow Labrys is one of the most complicated characters in the game, when you play S. Labrys you are playing as Labrys and her big bull buddy, Asterius. Like Labrys he has his own moves with their own startup that have to be used in tandem with her moves to properly combo with her and apply pressure. It's not like other personas where they just function as a separate attack, Asterius has to be used like his own character and due to that more than anyone else, S. Labrys' persona can be broken easily and she can be left helpless. However, handled properly and with smart decision making, Shadow Labrys is a powerful character who can open up opponents and lead to big damage opportunities with her wealth of options, SP moves, and Awakening movies.

In Ultimax, S. Labrys has been buffed with not only more damage on certain moves, but she also has 6 Persona cards now so Asterius can afford to take a bit more punishment and you can worry less about being broken. 2B is now faster so S. Labrys can anti-air reliably on her own, SB Challenge Authority is a great combo tool as it does more damage than the other two versions, recovers faster, and makes the opponent float higher. She now has a special that has Asterius grabbing the opponent from the air and headbutting them away, pretty good for letting S. Labrys follow up from and the SB Version does three headbutts.

New Hotness

Sho (The Rule-Smashing Pun Machine)
Voice Actors: Kenichi Suzumura/Todd Haberkorn
Themes: The Joker
Persona: None
Instant Kill: None
Trailers: JP, ENG

The pun loving, scar-faced, antagonist of Ultimax and the self-proclaimed bringer of the red fog, Sho Minazuki. Sho is working with the Malevolent Entity to basically kill the main characters and destroy everything through his own jealousy of others. Sho is an unusual character to be introduced to this series as he does not function like anyone else in the cast. Sho has no Persona, so his C is just an extra attack while his D is a counter stance, he's more like he's from Blazblue than Arena. Sho is a rushdown style character, to this end he's got good pressure, no Persona break, tricky cross-ups, can corner carry very easily and some status effects don't hurt him like they do other characters. Sho has his disadvantages in that mainly he lives and dies by his style. He has one long-ranged move that's better for applying pressure than used for zoning, no Persona means no sandwich attacks or safe midscreen normals, and in general his combos are shorter than most and so are his supers so he has to be as close as possible to be at his most threatening.

Among other things, Sho has a dash special to zoom across the screen, a DP furious action which can be cancelled into from other specials, a lot of specials which chase the opponent into the corner more, both of his supers have great utility, one being otg-capable and the other being a good finisher for combos that put the opponent airborne.

Minazuki (The Scar-Faced Dark Messiah)
Voice Actors: Same as Sho
Themes: Blood Red Moon
Persona: Tsukiyomi
Instant Kill: God and Demon Annihilation
Trailers: JP, ENG

Sho's other personality brought about by the Plume of Dusk he houses in his body. This show is far more sadistic, calculating, cold and above all of that, he unlike his other half controls a Persona, Tsukiyomi, the God of the Moon. Minazuki is to Sho as Shadow Labrys is to Labrys, they share a moveset, but the stark contrast they have in their C and D moves makes for a different character altogether. Minazuki has similar disadvantages as Sho, but his Persona more than makes up for them. Whereas Sho wants to remain ground, Tsukiyomi has several moves and normals that will bounce the opponent and launch them to lead to higher damage air combos and end in his projectile SP Move, Wings of Purgatory. Among other things Minazuki now has a teleport that he can use to gain ground, confuse, or continue combos with, it is very useful and drops him from multiple directions. He also has an awakening SP counter move which when activated makes him completely invincible, covers the screen in darkness, and makes Minazuki free to attack, cross-up, do whatever he wants in the time the shroud stays up.

Minazuki has many of the same moves as Sho, but his damage is lower from them. Tsukiyomi more than makes up for the lower damage with its higher potential for combos, utility specials, and even more useful SP moves and pressure tools than his Persona-less self.

Junpei Iori (The Mighty Strike-Out Slugger)
Voice Actors: Kosuke Toriumi/Vic Mignogna
Themes: Mr. Easy-Going Man, Deep Breath Deep Breath (Shadow)
Persona: Trismegistus
Instant Kill: Explosive Level-Up Grand Slam
Trailers: JP, ENG

Junpei's a little league coach now and called in by Mitsuru to help with the Shadow Operatives (Rarely). After falling asleep on his train back home and ending up in Inaba, Junpei gets caught up in the Red Fog knocking out the vending machine and him never getting his soda. Junpei's a rushdown character with gimmicks, a little gimmick Japanese people love known as, Baseball. Junpei's a level up character not unlike Frank West from Marvel 3, there is a counter above his SP meter that has 5 things you need to pay attention to: Runs, Bases, Balls, Outs, and Strikes. Runs are the most important one, with 10 runs Junpei activates Victory Cry mode.

Victory Cry Mode has the benefits of Clean Hits. With this, he can do longer and more damaging combos with his bat so long as his moves hit the "sweet spot" of the opponent, this automatically applies to SP moves. All he needs to do is hit them with specific spacing, HP Regeneration (Except when taking damage, of course), SP Invigoration (Slower than Elizabeth's Invigorate). So how do you score runs? HIT. THEM. WITH. THE. BAT. For every attack Junpei gets a base, so if you do a combo where the bat hits three times, Junpei gets three bases. If you have 3 bases hitting the opponent with a bat means you get a run. You can also gain bases by reflecting projectiles, Junpei has a move where he takes a batter's stance and any projectile thrown at him can be hit back at the opponent as his own projectile. Getting 4 balls gets you a base, you get balls by making the opponent block the bat, so if you put the opponent into a blockstring with the three bat swings you get 3 balls. Everytime you get a base, strikes and balls reset.

So you're probably wondering what those strikes and outs are? It's not a good time to be Junpei if you have those. If Junpei is hit or even fails to hit the opponent he gets an out. Getting put in hitstun gives you an out (1 per combo), getting thrown (Even if you break it), and getting three strikes (he gets one every time he whiffs a bat move). If you get an out balls will resets, if you get 3 outs everything aside from runs reset. Runs carry between rounds (Start from 0 and max out at 55) and the best way to get runs is using skills and SP moves.

This is a very complicated mechanic and due to the complex and difficult nature of it, Junpei is one of the harder characters to use. You have to know what his bat specials are, combo into them for the safest guarantee at runs and minimizing the risk of outs, and using SP skills to score homeruns so you can get more runs depending on your bases load (3 bases loaded and an SP skill mean 4 runs at max). He falls under the same problems most level up characters do unfortunately, they need to put a lot of work in to be able to do what half of the cast can normally.

Yukari Takeba (The Unsightly Pink Sniper)
Voices: Megumi Toyoguchi/Michelle Ruff
Themes: Pink Sniper, Calamity (Shadow), Wiping All Out (vs. Mitsuru, Aigis)
Persona: Isis
Instant Kill: Final Feather☆Arrow
Trailers: JP, ENG

Yukari's studying in college and working part-time as an actress in the latest Featherman show. One day on the set, Labrys shows up in a helicopter saying Mitsuru is in trouble and Yukari leaves immediately without even changing clothes. Yukari is a zoning character, her strengths lie in her projectiles and the pressure she can apply with them. Yukari's got arrows that move quickly across the screen, a Garu mechanic where she fires an orb of fire out and if she hits it with an arrow then the arrows home in on the opponent (even her super arrows are effected by them), leaping attacks, multiple status effects and even tornado supers which cover areas in front of her. Yukari has multiple options and is at her most threatening when the opponent has to cover space.

Rise Kujikawa (The Scandalous Superstar Idol)
Voices: Rie Kugimiya/Laura Bailey
Themes: Twinkle☆Star, Striptease (Shadow)
Persona: Himiko
Instant Kill: True ♥ Story
Trailers: JP, ENG

Rise is jumping into the fray after seeing her friends are in trouble once again. This time her desire to help and not be a burden has manifested Himiko into a new battle ready persona with satellites and sound-enhacing powers. Rise is a scary new character. She is a mix between a Mix Up character and a zoning character. She has many combo tools, can dish out a ton of damage, lock the opponent down with pressuring moves and keep them blocking for an eternity. Moves like Arrow Rain, ROCK YOU and Risette Field are all good moves for putting down pressure/combos/damage/etc, she has a lot of good multipurpose moves. Her supers are also good as they can be combo'd into very easily, even her DDR Super is not hard to combo into, but if you are not familiar with the button setup + bad with rhythm games, you will not get everything out of it. Even her Risette Field super is loving terrifying because not only is it a walking shield that damages opponents, the higher level versions of it make her even scarier since they hit tons before disappearing. Her DP is a huge rear end shield that even if you don't try to hit will still throw out electricity to hit you, thankfully it is a guaranteed Fatal Counter for you.

Rise also has a mechanic gimmick, Scan. When the opponent is scanned, Risette Field and Platinum Disc both change, gaining new properties upon hit. However, when either move is used or if Rise is hit, then scan goes away. Rise's downfalls are mostly in her Persona, she needs Himiko to be able to do most of her good moves and if Himiko is gone then she's pretty helpless. Hell, Himiko's normals aren't even really worthwhile as they take a bit of time to actually start. Nonetheless, she is a fantastic character in spite of the flaws she does have.

Ken Amada and Koromaru (The Pretentious Tenderfoot Duo)
Voices: Megumi Ogata/Cindy Robinson
Themes: Youthful Spirit, Unavoidable Battle (Shadow)
Persona: Kala-Nemi, Cerberus
Instant Kill: Total Annihilation
Trailers: JP, ENG

Ken is now on the student council in his middle school and is trying to take it easy and enjoy his youth. Although with words of Mitsuru being in trouble he heads to Inaba to help his seniors in their fight. Ken is a puppet character with Koromaru acting as his puppet. Not unlike Nirvana and Ignis, Koromaru has his own meter that when depleted puts him out of action. More like Ignis though, Koromaru can be called to and from battle by Ken. Ken much like the puppet characters who precede him has many pros, but also just as many cons. Ken's range is fantastic, thanks to both his huge rear end trident and Koromaru covering ground. Thanks to his long reach Ken can punish most things other characters cannot it gives him a great air-to-air game and air combos. He is able to apply fantastic pressure with the myriad of long moves he has and Koromaru's attacks.

Unfortunately, despite all of this, Ken's startup and recovery are slow. Koromaru HAS to be covering Ken's rear end otherwise you're gonna get stuffed out by people looking for punishes. He's got no real mix ups, his options to make people block low are very limited and the ones he does have aren't fantastic. His anti-air is garbage, it's completely unreliable even his DP and the only real Anti-Air he has is his Awakening Super. Ken is a character with a high skill curve, managing Koromaru and their work in tandem is the key to winning with them. If Koromaru's gone, Ken becomes a really bad character with slow long-range moves and no anti-air.

Tohru Adachi (The Egocentric Police Dick)
Voices: Mitsuaki Madono/Johnny Yong Bosch
Themes: Fool or Clown?
Persona: Magatsu-Izanagi
Instant Kill: Fall to Yomi
Trailers: JP, ENG, ENG 2

The world is full of poo poo and this guy is the king of poo poo mountain. Adachi has been pulled out of his cozy jail cell to work with Minazuki, but after he refused he was dumped onto the group and is being used as a distraction at best. Adachi has no real desire to actually pursue any ambitions, but he is more than happy to screw with the team. Adachi is a DLC Character who will be available to those who buy the game new or pre-order in Japan and in the West we get him for free in the first week of the game's release. Adachi is a tricky rushdown character, he's got some very janky tools that compliment the playstyle surprisingly well, but they come from few things.

Overall, Adachi is a strange kind of character in where he stands on how good he actually is. When he is not in awakening, you are relying a lot on his Persona for the meat of his attacks and causing status effects are a big part of his gameplan too. He is able to use fear far more frequently than the rest of the cast which gives him a bigger opportunity for fatal counters, but overall he's not amazing. His claim to fame is Heat Riser, a super that gives Adachi a 10% buff to his damage and defense. It's this buff and the second buff Adachi has that allows him to truly show his potential. When Adachi gets into Awakening he gets access to the most important tool in his movelist, Magatsu Mandala. Upon landing this super not only does it look loving sick as hell, but Adachi gains a buff that changes all of Magatsu Izanagi's attacks into status inducing attacks. Everything Izanagi does now will inflict a status effect of some sort and certain moves have certain effects too.

Thanks to this Adachi has amazing comeback potential and great wake-up options. His Persona actually only has 2 burstable attacks too, making it even more threatening. Unfortunately, this all comes tied to the fact that without his Persona, Adachi is in the shitter. Half of his normal attacks leave him wide open, he needs meter to manage the battle properly and to even get his buffs, and being so Persona reliant means he can never have his Persona broken if he gains momentum otherwise it's over, you're hosed. Adachi is one character among others who could've benefit a lot from having a Shadow version.

Marie (The Antisocial Poet of the Hollow Forest)
Voices: Kana Hanazawa/Eden Riegel
Themes: XOXO for You
Persona: Kaguya
Instant Kill: Musubi no Ikazuchi
Trailers: JP, ENG, ENG 2

Marie was not told of her friends' plans to get together and has shown up out of the blue. She seeks to help her friends and protect the town she has come to see as her home from Sho and his plans of destruction. Marie is a DLC character who will be available to Westerners for free like Adachi in the first week of the game's release. Marie is a trap character with zoning capabilities, she tosses out presents that can halt the opponent's progress entirely, set clouds up to stop the opponent from moving around, and even lay eyes for wake-up setups. Her normals are also good and she even has a wicked anti-air normal in down+B. Marie in general is a tough character to approach if she's away from you, her combos also aren't long and complex making her an easier to use character than most. Her awakening super, Bright Arrow, is straight up one of the best supers in the whole game and can easily reset the entire placement of the opponent.

Unfortunately, Marie's damage is complete rear end. Her final challenge asks her to do 6000 Damage and it requires she use most of her meter to do it, something most characters can do without using a ton of meter and she is also terrible at dealing damage when grounded as well. She needs meter to even have good mixups otherwise she's very limited in what she can actually do. Finally, if the opponent gets in on her, she can't do much. Her DP's great, but if it gets baited she's left helpless and it's very easy to predict given it's her only real reversal tool.

Margaret (The Sadistic Stud-Keeping Secretary)
Voices: Sayaka Ohara/Marisha Ray
Themes: Poem For Everyone's Souls (P4AU ver.)
Persona: Cu Chulainn, Yoshitsune, Ardha, Helel (Instant Kill)
Instant Kill: Morning Star
Trailers: JP, ENG

The Secretary of the Velvet Room is finally entering the battlefield. Margaret has been a guide towards Yu since the original Persona 4 and now she seeks to help him in the fight for real. Margaret is the final DLC character of Ultimax coming out after the other two (Two weeks after Marie in Japan and One week after both in America) as paid DLC. Maragaret's still fairly new and will remain fairly new even after the US Release of the game. However with what has been seen in the short time she's existed, she is basically a rekka character. She's got great ranged options being able to control the battle from various parts of the screen. Her normals can hit from mid-screen if necessary, and her supers especially Hassou Tobi are great at maximizing damage potential.

The Rekka part comes in with her Persona. Margaret is able to use all three of her Persona one after the other in any order she wishes leading to unique options for combos and even mixups. Combined with her 8 PERSONA CARDS (The most in the game), she seems like a fairly threatening character, right? No. Margaret's super slow, a good number of her normals all have long recovery, Her reversal options are not stellar either, the best she's got is some of her supers and she seems very gimmicky to actually use when put into practice. Time will tell before we know how good she actually is, but as of right now the opinion on Margaret is not very high.

So what's the deal with the story mode, are they going to be individual again or combined?

Story modes will be separated between the P3 and P4 cast as a whole, there is also a true ending and all three DLC characters get their own story mode. The story of Ultimax follows only a few days after Arena's. The Shadow Operatives have been captured and crucified, Red Fog has rolled into town and screwed up all sorts of things, and finally, Tartarus has resurfaced in Inaba. The only people that are connected to all of the events are Sho Minazuki and the Shadows of the characters appearing to act as soldiers in fighting them. Events are all spiraling towards a big climactic showdown and who knows how it's all gonna turn out?

Unlockable characters?

There are none. All characters are unlocked from the start, all Shadow modes are unlocked from the start, simple as that. Speaking of Shadow characters...

SHADOW CHARACTERS

So Shadow characters have a lot different about them aside from obvious aesthetics:

-If they are of an already existing character then they get that characters Dial Combo from Arena. (IE: AAA > Swift Strike > Ziodyne for Shadow Yu)
-Most characters have Shadow modes. Only Sho, Minazuki, Shadow Labrys, Elizabeth, Adachi, Marie, and Margaret don't have shadow modes.
-Awakening Mode and Burst replaced with Shadow Frenzy. Press A+C+D with 100 SP to activate, can be cancelled any time a one more burst would be able to.
-In Shadow Frenzy, characters can cancel skills into skills for free and have unlimited SP for a while. You can also cancel SB skills into other SB skills and the same goes for SP Moves.
-Labrys has a shadow mode, yes.
-Shadow characters have 2000 more hp than their normal versions.
-SP carries between rounds.
-If a round ends while a Shadow Character is in Shadow Frenzy, they will start the next round with half the SP they had during Shadow Frenzy in the previous round.
-While Shadow Mode characters can not go into Awakening, they can perform Awakening Supers anytime for 50 SP.
-Shadow Mode character's attacks do 20% less damage than their normal counterparts.
-Shadow Mode characters are stated to gain SP faster than their normal counterparts.

Pre-Orders or limited editions?

Pre-order the game you get the first half of the tarot set, a Teddie bopping bag and free Adachi for the first week (You will get this anyways.)

Game costs 60 bucks more by the way, yes 10 bucks more than Arena.

The Utility of Shadow Characters and who is actually good in Shadow Mode

So seeing all of the benefits of Shadow Mode, you think they're probably good, right? No, no they're not. They are far more SP based than the regular versions, despite that though they don't really get the benefits the normal characters get from something like Awakening Mode. That 20% Less Damage is A LOT less damage, normal combos tend to be pretty weak and if the lengthier ones suffer from damage scaling, then what the gently caress is even the point of playing certain characters in Shadow form (Yosuke, Yukiko, Labrys, and more). Let's look at a video example of Kanji's Awakening Super and compare the regular and Shadow ones. Both of these videos are from the console versions of the game, btw.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQostA8oCqs&t=250shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IyaBtXmyfs&t=694s

S. Kanji's damage was 3456 while Kanji's was 4321, that's nearly a 1000 damage difference and neither Naoto or Akihiko was in Awakening state to even get the defense buff which would reduce it more. To add on Naoto's got about 8500 HP in Ultimax and Akihiko still has 10000, that means regular Kanji can kill Naoto at half health without her ever entering awakening, but S. Kanji cannot and for someone like Kanji who is a grappler that is a big deal being able to do more immediate damage.

So what Shadow Characters are good then that the minuses don't chew through their gameplan too much? Yu, Chie, Mitsuru and sometimes Naoto. Here are some Shadow Frenzy combos for you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YdUaWlbCvQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heGGx43-x7M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7IhnJTicPg

These characters more than others are already either really good in their regular versions (Yu, Chie, Mitsuru) or get more benefits from have more SP based mechanics than having 20% more damage (Naoto). Yukari and Junpei still seem pretty unknown in regards to how good their shadow modes are since those two characters are entirely new and people are still figuring those out before they figure out if their Shadow form has any utility and Kenomaru & Rise are new to console, so we won't know for a couple of months how good their regular versions are let alone the Shadow ones.

Good thread for a good game. Not nearly enough minotaur love in the OP, though, this must be rectified IMMEDIATELY.

On that note, maybe consider adding some match videos to OP that show off the characters played well? Your descriptions are great as they are, mind.

Generally speaking, the PS3 scene for any given Arcsys fighter will be more robust than the 360 version thanks to region freedom, so you can expect a pretty healthy scene.

I can't wait to see Adachi zip around screen in a couple days. There's way too much new hotness for me to handle, Junpei is probably the only character who seems not _that_ interesting out of the new group, but baseball is still a fine gimmick so it's all good.

Edit: After actually reading the OP for the old characters, is Shadow Naoto now better than normal Naoto? I can see how the damage nerf would be negligible on a character who can combo into instant kills, but either way in P4Arena I didn't like Naoto much anyway. I'm excited to try some of the new guys and from what I hear Yu and Chie are just good all rounders now.

Denpa's the person to watch for Shadow Naoto, and she definitely seems like the better version. Her new move that poisons you is a pretty good combo filler and surprisingly common starter, and the poison doesn't seem to be scaled down in damage like the rest of her moves (kind of makes sense since it's a status effect). Overall Shadow Naoto seems almost the same as P4A Naoto in terms of being able to do TOD combos, but it's not just Hamaon, the raw damage output is also pretty off the charts. The only other shadow characters that can do similarly crazy combos are Shadow Mitsuru and Chie AFAIK, the rest being less useful/easier to burst out/etc.

Watching a bit of this video with Denpa, it seems the character still suffers from the same problems as before: she just gets mauled by characters with better rushdown and normals. She got some buffs that help her out in that department though, so if you have good defense you're pretty much guaranteed to get 100 meter twice in a match to threaten them with a TOD combo.

Yeah, it's kind of unfortunate, but all I have to work with right now are the usual folks on twitter who got early copies and dustloop. Some stuff will leak through eventually.

As for Shadow characters, it's kind of telling when only Shadow Chie is put on the same tier list as the other characters, the rest of the Shadow characters have their own sort of tier list relative to each other. But S.Chie's ability to chain buffs as easily as she can makes up for a lot of lost ground on account of the shadow damage problem.

Anyways, for those who care, it looks like the guy ripping the game files is uploading the music files, so keep an eye out for those. Probably will be Making the rounds shortly.
