In fact, if you draw a warm smiley face on the front of a freight train, autistic people will misread its intentions and jump onto the tracks in an attempt to hug it. This is why very few trains have big smiley faces on them when they really really should. I enjoyed this post

I take the caltrain every day and most days there's a guy who's waiting at the end of the platform (the same guy every time) taking photos of the train as it comes in. I mean, it's the same train every day. I don't understand trainspotting but I accept it as a thing. I didn't think it would be worth 'spotting' the same train every day for years though? that's weird.

It has something to do with autistic people having an affinity for patterns, ritualistic behavior, etc. A bunch of train museums and such run autism outreach programs: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/14/nyregion/children-with-autism-connecting-via-bus-and-train.html?pagewanted=all My sister has autism but she's a severe case so she doesn't really care about trains and has the organizational skills of a bull in a china shop.

I'm autistic, OP, and I never understood this either. Everyone else with autism seems to love trains, but I never found them interesting at all. I had to stop participating on several autism forums because others would shame me for my interests, which are unusual even for autistic people (grain processing, doorframe styles, and female American cartoon characters from the 2000-2005 era). I find it sad that people who have experienced social isolation because of their autism are so quick to exclude others for not acting like a "normal" autistic. Maybe if they had watched a great '00s era cartoon like Totally Spies, they would have learned some important lessons about accepting others and celebrating people's differences.

Lonos Oboe posted:Not taking the piss at all here, but why did you get into that field? Do you have an affinity for those things? What do you think attracts these people to them? I'm a civil design engineer, and I work (variously) in track alignment and overhead electrification design - I only fell into it through doing an internship at university and that experience getting me a job afterward. I wouldn't say I have an afinity for trains themselves (ie: I'm pretty sure I've never taken a photo of a train outside of a work context), but it's optimisation of the transport system itself that intersts me more - like I said before, a rail system is (at least theoretically) independent of outside influences (traffic / patronage / weather / etc.), so actually making optimisational changes to it will have real & predictable effects. Luckily, since I don't really deal so much with the trains themselves on a regular basis, I don't have much interaction with trainspotters (here in Australia, we call them Gunzels, which used to be an insult but they adopted it). I have friends who actually design rolling stock, and they can't stand them.
